MEET SUKI, the deaf dog 

learning sign language to 

communicate. 

The one-year-old heading 

dog has had a bit of a rough 

start to life, surrendered to the 

city council pound as a puppy 

before being taken in by her 

foster mum Rachel Johnston. 

While Suki’s past is unknown, 

it is expected that she 

was born on a farm but handed 

over to the pound once it was 

discovered she was deaf. 

Johnston works part-time at 

the Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust 

where Suki is up for adoption, 

but has welcomed Suki into her 

home until she finds a permanent 

one. 

When Suki arrived, she was 

very “bitey” and Johnston had 

to work patiently with her 

to train her how to behave, 

including teaching her sign 

language. 

Johnston uses hand signals 

to communicate with Suki 

and has taught her sit, stay, 

good dog and come, although 

admitted that’s still a work in 

progress. 

“I’ve never had a deaf dog 

ever so it was a big learning 

curve for me as well, you do 

end up talking to the dog all 

the time,” she said.

calls for the temperature to be 

increased at Taiora QEII’s 25m 

lane pool.

disappointed the temperature of 

27.5 deg C would not be increased. 

Her comments have led to 

readers backing Stewart’s claims, 

saying something needs to be 

done to accommodate for aqua 

joggers who also use the lane 

pool. 

Maria Craig has been a daily 

aqua jogger at QEII for “quite some 

years” now and said she’s had to 

purchase a “pricey” pair of cold 

water gloves for her arthritic 

hands. 

“Many, many people of all ages 

complain daily of the freezing 

cold water. I am now retired and 

doing my best to look after my 

health and leaving QEII in a daily 

semi-hyperthermic state is not 

beneficial at all to my health I feel. 

The water does need to be at least 

half a degree warmer.”

goodness sake more stupid 

thinking from the council setting

swimmers when by far the 

majority of users are recreational 

and swimmers using the pool for 

daily exercise. It’s too cold.”

Riccarton Community Garden 

and Pātaka. 

However, Nick Te Paa (right) 

is staying positive abou the

Peverel St site expires in September. 

Te Paa and his wife Loretta 

helped set up the community 

garden in 2013, later expanding 

the projec to include a community 

pantry, or pātaka. 

At not quite 4 sq m, the 

pātaka was too sma l for the 

weekly average of about 40 

people it helped to feed, Te Paa 

said. 

“We don’t have the capacity 

to store here, so a lot of the stuff 

is stored at my place, in the 

garage.” 

He hoped to rebuild it at 

twice the current size when a 

new location was settled on. 

“A l that extra wi l be just 

storage space, and that’ l 

free up my garage. One side’s 

completely taken up with food.” 

The end of the Kāinga Ora 

lease was likely to mean the 

separation of the garden and 

the pantry.

A VOLUNTEER community 

patrol has been tasked with 

policing dangerous intersections 

in a bid to improve driver 

behaviour. 

The Hornby Community 

Patrol has been monitoring three 

intersections, including one where 

a cyclist died after co liding with a 

truck.

quiet summer for the 45-member 

volunteer team, who patrol 

between five and six times per 

week.

Kids ‘gutted’ after bike stolen 


THE OWNER of a unique cargo 

bike that was stolen from his 

garage is overwhelmed by the 

supportive response from the 

community. 

Al Duncan’s bucket bike 

was stolen earlier this month 

from his home in Waltham 

and after nearly three weeks of 

no sightings, he has decided to 

replace it. 

Duncan bought the bike from 

Bicycle Junction in Wellington 

and made the bucket box in 

his friend’s workshop, after 

measuring his children to 

make sure they would fit. Every 

morning Neema, 10, and Malo, 

8, would climb in for what many 

would say is a unique ride to 

school, 30min across town to 

Burnside. 

However, earlier this month, 

Duncan left a garage door 

opener in his unlocked car, 

which was parked up his 

driveway. When he returned 

that night, he noticed his car was 

unlocked, so locked it without 

thinking much of it and put his 

bike in the garage. 

The next morning his garage 

door was wide open and his 

bike was gone along with power 

tools, cycling gear and hiking 

packs. 

He said someone must have 

taken the garage door opener out 

of his unlocked car during the

day and returned that night to 

steal his belongings. 

“It’s not the kind of bike you 

can throw in the back of a car 

and take off because it’s got a 

really long wheel base so you 

need a long van or trailer to pick 

it up and take it somewhere,” 

Duncan said. 

Duncan phoned police to 

file a report straight away but 

after not hearing anything back 

and contacting his insurance 

company, he has decided to 

replace the bike. 

The bike originally cost 

Duncan $8000, with extra 

costs to build the bucket box, 

but now the price has hiked up 

to $13,000 due to supply chain 

issues and inflation, something 

Duncan is willing to pay to get it 

replaced. 

Duncan was “blown away” 

by the support he received 

online about his stolen bike 

and has more than 30,000 views 

on his LinkedIn post and more 

than 100 likes on his Facebook 

post. 

He had received comments 

from members of the community 

saying they’ve seen him ride 

through the city with his kids. 

“When you’re on a bike like 

that and you’ve got kids in it 

you get people giving you a wide 

birth and people winding down 

their window and talking to 

you at traffic lights and just real 

engagement with people around 

you so it’s been really noticed in 

the community.” 

Duncan said the bike was a 

big part of time spent with his 

children, taking it to Little River 

for a camping trip and taking 

selfies in it together each time 

they ride. 

“I’ve got four years of pictures 

of them growing up in the bucket 

so it’s really close to my heart.” 

Duncan said he was nervous 

to tell Neema and Malo the bike 

had been stolen but said while 

they were “gutted” they handled 

it well and his friend has even let 

them use his, which is a similar 

model. 

“There’s been a beautiful 

response from people and I’m 

really grateful for that,” Duncan 

said. 

“To be burgled is a pretty 

horrible feeling but to have 

that love and support around 

instantly from the community 

has been uplifting and helps you 

remember the positive things 

rather than focusing on the 

negative.”

for the city council’s Summer 

With Your Neighbours scheme, 

which provides a small amount of 

funding for activities that bring 

neighbourhoods together. 

The scheme has been operating 

for the past few summers and has 

helped to pay for street parties, 

neighbourhood garage sales, 

pot-luck meals, sports days and 

even an annual potato growing 

competition. 

“The beauty of Summer With 

Your Neighbours is that the ideas 

for bringing people together come 

from the neighbourhoods themselves. 

They choose how they want 

to connect and when,’’ said city 

council head of community support 

and partnerships John Filsell. 

“The reason the council provides 

some funding is because 

we know how important it is 

to have strong neighbourhoods 

and strong communities. We 

saw the benefit of that after the 

earthquakes and we want to continue 

to ensure that we encourage 

people to have strong bonds with 

their neighbours.”

One dog in particular that 

struggles with stress and noise 

from other dogs is Stanley, the 

two-year-old Staffy cross who 

became an essential member of 

the admin team. 

Stanley gets stressed from the 

noise of other dogs barking and 

tries to escape, often hurting 

himself in the process, so spends 

time in the office with staff during 

the day. 

“He’s really relaxed there 

because he’s around people,” 

Paterson said. 

The trust gets most of its 

dogs from council pounds like 

Waimakariri, Selwyn, Ashburton 

and the city. 

The majority of them are surrendered 

by owners who can no 

longer care for them, or they are 

abandoned and picked up from 

the side of the road. 

Paterson said the hardest part 

of the job is coming across dogs 

that have been mistreated and 

hearing the stories of their past. 

Two months ago the trust 

had two small dogs dumped on 

the driveway in a crate during a 

“freezing” night, while another 

with a broken tail was dumped 

on the side of the road. 

“People do some pretty awful 

things,” she said.

“They’re sad stories . . . it’s just 

disheartening the way some 

people treat an animal and when 

you’re an animal lover that’s hard 

to handle.” 

However, staff and volunteers 

work with these dogs to build up 

their trust again, giving them the 

chance to show their true character 

once comfortable. 

In fact, most of the dogs at the 

trust are named after certain traits 

or characteristics they have. 

One dog in particular New 

Brighton residents will be familiar 

with was named Trapper, 

after multiple attempts at trying 

to catch him while he was living 

at New Brighton Beach, causing 

quite the fuss on a Facebook 

community group. 

Paterson said while staff and 

volunteers form a bond with each 

dog, they are stoked to see them 

get adopted into a loving family 

who looks after them. 

“We couldn’t survive without 

those volunteers, they’re amazing,” 

Paterson said. 

The trust has 120 volunteers, 

with animal behaviourists and a 

qualified dog trainer in the mix, 

retraining dogs with traumatic 

pasts that can make rehoming 

difficult. 

Paterson said some dogs have 

experienced being hit by things 

such as a leash, so have developed 

a fear of leashes that has to 

be worked through. 

“They each have their own

little challenges. When we get 

a dog, we don’t know their full 

history so we don’t know what 

we’re dealing with until we get to 

know them.” 

Occasionally, when a dog gets 

adopted it will be returned to the 

trust if the owners can’t care for 

it properly, which Paterson said 

was quite hard. 

“We always try to be really 

kind to people that need to surrender 

dogs because often it’s a 

hard thing to do . . . so we need 

to be supportive.” 

Three-year-old Boss, a Rottweiler 

cross rescued from the 

city council pound, is the trust’s 

longest-stay dog, having spent 

more than 600 days in the shelter. 

He is currently undergoing 

an adoption trial, which staff 

hope will be a success. 

Staff and volunteers tend to 

stay in contact with people who 

adopt the dogs, and get sent 

photos and updates on how 

they’re doing, even years after the 

adoption. 

“We do tend to have long-term 

relationships with people and 

they’ll adopt a dog but then come 

back to get a second dog,” Paterson 

said. 

This year marks 40 years of 

the trust operating. To celebrate, 

staff want to build an adventure 

park for the dogs on the five-acre 

patch of land at the trust. 

The park will be fit with tunnels, 

obstacle courses, sprinklers, 

a paddle pool, a sand pit and 

everything else a dog needs to 

play with. 

There is currently a Givealittle 

page with a goal to raise $40,000 

by the end of the year. 

Paterson said they had “a long 

way to go” with having only raised 

a little under $3000, but the trust 

will soon be approaching funders 

and launching a separate campaign, 

which she hopes will bring 

in more donations. 

“Shelter life for dogs is quite 

hard, they don’t get the one-onone 

attention they would if they 

were in a home so something 

like that, that enables them to 

be challenged and do different 

things and just enable them to

Johnston tried using high pitch 

whistles and clicker training as 

the vet suspects Suki can hear 

some loud noises, but when she 

didn’t respond to these Johnston 

made up her own hand symbols. 

“I looked at a few things online 

. . . I just went with what was 

easiest at the time and what made 

sense to me,” she said. 

Suki has been in Johnston’s care 

for just over a year now, a longer 

stay than most foster dogs. 

“She’s been my longest term. I 

wasn’t expecting to have her for 

this long,” Johnston laughed. 

Fostering and rescuing dogs is 

second nature to Johnston, who 

has volunteered in India and 

Thailand to help care for street 

dogs. 

She has also taught animal care 

at Ara when it was called Aoraki 

Polytechnic several years ago, and 

is currently completing a masters 

in clinical animal behaviour 

through The University of Edinburgh. 

Johnston also has a ridgeback 

shar-pei cross named Keke, 

rescued from the city council 

pound, who doesn’t mind being 

rounded up by Suki when they go 

on walks.

after her, running out wide and 

then bringing her back in, as 

a heading dog would do with

“She’s a smart dog, she needs a 

lot of mental stimulation as well

great as well to get her into a nice 

home,” Johnston said. 

“I’ll definitely miss her, I will, 

you always do. You always miss 

your fosters, you always shed a 

tear, but I want her to have a good 

home.”

Cool temperature a hot topic

used for both aqua exercise and 

competitive swimming, is based 

on user’s preferences with competitive 

swimmers preferring a 

cooler temperature so they don’t 

get dehydrated during training. 

Aneta Green said she finds 

the lane pool is too cold and has 

stopped going. 

“I am sick of not being able 

to use the lap pool, as it is being 

used by other recreation groups, 

but still being charged full price 

for half the service, as a local 

who tries to use local city council 

services, it is a very disappointing 

service, and I will no longer be 

using the pool facilities.” 

Jenny Walkinshaw does aqua 

jogging at QEII and said she has 

got out of the pool feeling “shivery 

and cold” in spite of moving 

around a lot. 

“The cool temperature of the 

water is always a topic of conversation. 

There is a noticeable 

decrease in numbers using the 

aqua jogging area – however, this 

may be due to Covid. This week 

we counted a maximum of seven 

aqua joggers in the pool at any 

one time – there used to be 20+.” 

Stewart said she’s disappointed 

that the community board “isn’t 

taking leadership” on this issue. 

“The community board 

chairperson holds the top job in 

the ward. His/her role is to lead 

that board in advocating for its 

community, not disempower 

another elected member,” she 

said. 

“Here we see staff saying they 

won’t improve water temperature 

supported by the chairperson 

who incidentally swims at Graham 

Condon Centre.” 

However, community board 

chair Kelly Barber said he swims 

at both Graham Condon and 

QEII, and sometimes thinks 

Graham Condon is colder than 

QEII. 

“If people think it’s cold then 

I guess that’s an operational 

matter,” he said. 

“We asked staff for an answer 

and they gave us that and we 

were happy with that, except for 

maybe Linda . . . I don’t know 

what she expects of us really.” 

Barber said it was a difficult 

situation and if staff increased the 

temperature then he wondered if 

complaints would arise from the 

competitive swimmers as well. 

Diane Hale-Fielding said QEII 

is her main pool and has “got 

colder” as time goes by. 

“Linwood pool much warmer 

probably by a degree or so but it 

makes a difference. I do Aquafit 

at QEII and we all feel the same 

it truly is uncomfortable. The 

pool is supposed to be for all not 

just the swimmers who say they 

sweat. We pay as well.” 

Sandra McCarthy thinks the 

pool is too cold and said the aqua 

fit class has mentioned this to 

staff often. 

“There are up to two classes on 

most days of the week, with at 

least 25 of us in each class paying 

at least $8.70 and up to $11.50 a 

session. Surely this give us some 

say and consideration.” 

Vivien Coulter has been 

attending aquafit classes every 

weekday for the last two years at 

QEII, Pioneer and Linwood and 

said the QEII pool makes her feel 

“chilled to the bone.” 

“Many of the people who 

attend are limited to exercising 

only in the water because of 

age, injury or disabilities and 

if they stop doing this because 

of the cold there wellbeing is 

compromised. 

“Perhaps the instructors 

could do a head count of the 

class attendees who find the 

temperature too cold?”

WITH THE 2022/23 season in 

sight, Waimairi Tennis Club in 

Watford St has welcomed Andrew 

Fairley as its new head coach and 

Amanda Marchant as its new 

junior administrator. 

Fairley, a Scot originally from 

Dundee, has more than 25 

years of coaching experience 

within a variety of roles and club 

environments, both in Scotland 

and New Zealand. 

He served 12 years as racquets 

manager for Next Generation 

Clubs/David Lloyd Leisure Clubs 

in Dundee before relocating to 

Queenstown where he established 

and operated his own successful 

coaching business for more than 

eight years. 

During the winter months he 

was a ski instructor. 

Well versed in all aspects of 

tennis programmes, Fairley 

launched mini tennis/hot shots 

in Dundee, its immediate success 

seeing many children joining the 

club and subsequently playing 

events and progressing to become 

competing juniors. 

“I enjoy being on court and 

working in all areas of the 

coaching programme,” he said. 

“I’m exciting about working 

with Waimairi club members and 

helping them achieve their tennis 

goals. I want to see the club grow 

even better and for there to be 

opportunities and potential for 

everyone involved.”

Plum pudding 

Serves 8 

Ingredients 

600gm dried fruit, place 

in large casserole dish 

with: 

¼ cup sherry 

125gm butter, melt, then 

add: 

Finely grated rind of 1 

large orange 

1 egg, beaten with a fork 

2 cups flour sifted with: 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1 teaspoon mixed spice 

1 teaspoon ground cloves 

½ cup brown sugar 

Directions 

Select a heatproof bowl (or 

loaf tin) which will hold 

five cups and will fit into 

crockpot. 

Grease the bowl/tin 

with butter, then line with 

microwave-proof cling film. 

Microwave fruit/sherry 

for five minutes or until all 

the fruit is hot, plump and 

shiny. 

The liquid will soak into 

the fruit as it cools. 

Cool the mixture to 

room temperature before 

using it. 

Turn the crockpot onto 

high and fill with two cups 

hot water. Add brown sugar 

to the flour/baking soda/ 

mixed spice/ground cloves, 

then tip butter/orange rind/ 

egg into dry ingredients 

and mix well. Add the fruit 

mixture and mix gently, but 

thoroughly. 

Spoon mixture into 

prepared bowl/tin and level 

off the top. 

Cover with tin foil, folding 

the edges down over 

the bowl. 

Lower the bowl/tin into 

the crockpot and put the lid 

on. Cook on high to eight 

to 12 hours. 

Turn out while still warm 

as it will be less likely to 

stick to the container at this 

stage, then wrap and cool 

completely. 

Serve with brandy sauce, 

custard and/or whipped 

cream. 

Brandy sauce 

Ingredients 

1 cup blue milk, place in 

medium-sized bowl with: 

1 packet vanilla instant 

pudding 

300ml cream 

½ teaspoon nutmeg 

3 tablespoons brandy 

Directions 

Beat milk/instant pudding 

with hand beater until 

well mixed. 

Pour in the cream (all 

of it), add the nutmeg and 

brandy and beat again until 

it is just mixed. 

Can be eaten straight 

away or can be warmed in 

the microwave. 

Caramel sticky date 

pudding 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

1 cup water, place in 

largest casserole dish with: 

400gm pitted dates, 

chopped roughly 

150gm butter 

2 tablespoons golden 

syrup 

2 tablespoons sugar 


1 cup plain glour, sifted 

with: 

2 teaspoons cinnamon 

2 eggs, lightly beaten 

Heat water/dates/butter/golden 

syrup/sugar for 

10 minutes, stirring until 

reduced leaving the dates 

moist. 

Leave to cool for 15 

minutes, while still warm 

add baking soda to the date 

mixture and stir to combine 

(this should froth to 

add lightness to the mix), 

then add flour/cinnamon 

and the eggs, stirring until 

everything is evenly combined. 

Pour into small 

springform pan that has 

been well greased and lined 

with baking paper, and 

bake at 180 deg C for 50 

minutes. While it is baking, 

make caramel sauce, as 

follows: 

½ cup brown sugar, place 

in large casserole dish 

with: 

½ cup golden syrup 

50gm butter 

1 cup cream 

1 teaspoon vanilla essence 

Directions 

Heat until all the ingredients 

have dissolved, stirring 

constantly until sauce turns 

a golden caramel colour, 

beat with egg beater to 

remove any lumps. 

To serve: Pour the warm 

sauce over the pudding and 

serve with ice cream and/ 

or cream. 

Spicy apple flancake 

Makes 8 pieces 

Ingredients 

2 large apples (cored & 

diced), place in large bowl 

with: 

1 cup sugar 

125gm butter (melted) 

1 egg (lightly beaten) 

1½ cups flour, sifted with: 

½ teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon ground 

cinnamon 


½ teaspoon ground 

nutmeg 

½ teaspoon allspice 

1 cup raisins 

Icing sugar (to dust top 

with when cooked) 

Directions 

Leave apples/sugar to stand 

while other ingredients are 

prepared. 

Add egg and butter to 

apples/sugar, then add the 

dry ingredients and lastly 

the raisins, mixing lightly 

to just combine, do not 

overmix. 

Spread into small 

springform pan that has 

been well greased and 

lined with baking paper. 

Bake at 180 deg C for 

60min, remove from oven 

immediately. 

When cooled slightly, 

but while still warm, dust 

top with icing sugar. 

Leave to stand 10min 

before cutting. 

Serve either hot or cold, 

with custard, cream or ice 

cream, or can just be eaten 

plain, on its own.
