End of Summer Term GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK YEAR 6! Our summer term is always a special opportunity to celebrate Year 6 and their achievements and to wish them well on their journey. From the moment Year 6 arrived in school, they have embraced every challenge and opportunity. We are incredibly proud of their resilience, their care for others and their ability to find joy in everything. They have been wonderful role models to the rest of the school and we will miss them greatly. However, we know they are all ready for new challenges, friendships and experiences and we hope they will keep us and Brereton’s values with them as they journey through life. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK YEAR 6!
Our summer term is always a special opportunity to celebrate Year 6 and their achievements
and to wish them well on their journey. From the moment Year 6 arrived in school, they have
embraced every challenge and opportunity. We are incredibly proud of their resilience, their care
for others and their ability to find joy in everything. They have been wonderful role models to
the rest of the school and we will miss them greatly. However, we know they are all ready for
new challenges, friendships and experiences and we hope they will keep us and Brereton’s values
with them as they journey through life.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

TATTENHALL
Year 2 had a fabulous night at Tattenhalll Residential Centre. The
weather was glorious and the children were incredibly excited to be embarking
on this adventure.
On day one, they enjoyed taking part in problem solving activities, a low
ropes course, toasting marshmallows and zipping along the zip wire! A
particular highlight was listening to the children singing hymns around the
campfire!
A late night (followed by an early morning!) followed but the children were
full of energy and wonder as we headed off on our walk around Tattenhall,
exploring human and physical features. The village park was a great
way to burn off excess energy and the ice lollies afterwards helped to keep
the children going.
On the way home, we stopped at St Paul’s, Utkinton. We loved their
outdoor space but were amazed at the size of the school.
We are incredibly proud of Y2 for their conduct throughout the trip;
they were polite, respectful and they embraced every opportunity. Well
done Year 2, it was a pleasure to take you!

SPORTS DAY
A huge well done to all of the
children for showing the values of
respect, aspiration, courage and
perseverance at this year’s Sports
Day. The behaviour of the pupils
was exemplary and it was great to
see them cheering one another on.
GARDEN PARTY
It was lovely to see the return of our annual
garden party this summer. The event was very
well attended and it felt wonderful to be able to
bring the whole community together.
A big thank you to everyone who helped to make it
such a success!

ROSE QUEEN
The return of the Brereton Garden Party also meant we were able to crown our new Rose Queen, Bethany. Bethany
and her retinue paraded around the village before the coronation took place on the main stage.
Thank you to our outgoing queen, Elizabeth for her service to our community. We are sure that Bethany, ably
supported by her attendants, will continue to honour this position and we look forward to supporting their fundraising
efforts.
Firstly, I would like to welcome you to our 2022 Garden Party, aren’t we lucky the sun has come out for us!
It is exciting to see the Garden Party return this year and we offer a huge thank you to those who have already given so
much time to organise the event and to those helping over the weekend. Rev. Sandi, Mrs McLean and Teaching Staff, and
the PTA to name but a few.
I’d also like to thank the visiting kings and queens for coming and celebrating our garden party. Today is made so special with
the help and support of the rosebuds, page boys and attendants.
I feel honoured to be selected as Brereton Rose Queen, to serve my school, Church, and community. I believe we all can
learn to look after the environment and make a difference in helping others.
I have lots of ideas for fundraising to support my chosen charities throughout this year, I hope that as the local community
and fellow pupils you will join my attendants and I in these fun events.
We hope you will enjoy the rest of your day and visit our wonderful games and stalls. And of course, have lots of fun!
Thank you
Bethany

YORK
At the beginning of May, Year 4
journeyed to York for their first
residential! Over the three days,
the children consolidated their
knowledge of history topics they
had studied, including the Romans
and the Vikings. They also
explored the physical and human
features of York and how the
river played a big part in the
development of
settlement.
York as a
The children particularly enjoyed
their visit to the Yorvik Centre
(though they weren’t too keen on
the smell!). They also visited the
York Minster and we exceptionally
proud of their behaviour, respect
and reverence, particularly during
the Evensong service.
It was an absolute pleasure to take
them away, well done Year 4!
6

CADBURY’S WORLD
This term Year 5 visited Cadbury World to link with our history unit about the Aztecs.
The children learnt a lot about the history of the famous chocolate factory and we saw
the process of how the chocolate was made. We learnt about the cacao bean and how it
was used both as currency during the Aztec period and to produce hot chocolate which
they believed brought them closer to their gods.
CDAT TEACHER
TRAINING
Applications for teacher training
through CDAT for
2023/24 will open in September.
To find out more,
speak to Mrs McLean or Mrs
Wood.
ROBERT’S BAKERY
7
We were very fortunate to welcome back
Mrs Roberts from Roberts bakery to
Brereton to work with Year 5. In the
morning, the children made their own bread
and in the afternoon they learnt about the
history of the bakery and how the factory
works. It was very interesting and we all
learnt a lot. At the end of the day, we were
all given a delicious, warm loaf of bread!

MATIILDA
MATILDA
Our end of year performance this year was Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Year 6 made us all very proud with their
incredible acting, singing and stage management. We particularly loved the comic performances! They were all
superstars and it was lovely to see how much the children enjoyed performing.
"Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole
hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it's unbelievable...”
― Roald Dahl, Matilda
8

CHESTER
As part of their work on Roman life in Britain, Year 3 enjoyed a very interesting visit to Chester. They were able to
explore different artefacts and learn about archaeology and it’s importance in understanding the past. A walking tour
of the Roman walls followed, after which they arrived at the famous amphitheatre, where they learnt about battle
tactics and gladiatorial combat. Fortunately, everyone came back alive and well and all limbs attached!
9

PROM
Year 6 were able to let off some post-SATs steam at their prom. They all looked very glam as they enjoyed ice
slushies, a photobooth, a disco and Dominoes pizza!
10

MUSIC LESSONS
We are currently offering private
guitar, violin and piano lessons in
school. Mrs McDonald is also able
to offer Brass (trumpet, trombone,
baritone, French horn) and Love
Music Trust are able to provide a
teacher for Woodwind (flute, clarinet,
saxophone). Please contact the
school office or speak to Mrs Tice if
you are interested.
NEW STARTERS
This half term, our new pupils have
been popping in to see their new
classroom and to meet their new
teachers.
They have all been very
grown up and we can’t wait for
September!
This year, we were also able to host
our new starter picnic, where families
were able to come and meet. Thank
you to everyone who came, it was a
lovely way to spend the afternoon.
CHESTER ZOO
There was much awe and wonder
amongst the children as we
journeyed around the zoo. Every
time we turned a corner a
mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian
or fish were waiting to greet
us and we certainly had some
close encounters. Throughout the
day the children were polite,
engaged and showed great
knowledge about the habitats and
features of animals. The leaders
in our workshop sessions were
most impressed. All in all, a day
to cherish. After all, it’s not
every day you have the opportunity
to touch an elephant’s
tooth, come up close and personal
with an alligator and watch
butterflies hatching from cocoons!
SCIENCE NEWS
One of the best parts of being the school science leader
is when children come to me and share the learning
they have been doing at home in addition to their science
lessons. Every subject leader would like more time
in the school week for their subject and I am no different,
so developing a passion for wider science learning
is my primary objective. With this in mind, this
term we have completed our submission for the Primary
Science Quality Mark – a national school improvement
programme partnered by the University of Hertfordshire
and the Primary Science Teaching Trust.
Hopefully I will have good news to share with you in
September!
An aspect of science learning that I’d particularly like
to develop is providing the children with external visits
or speakers that put a ‘real life’ focus on the science
topic they are studying in class. If you have visited
places that you feel would be a great place to take a
class, or know any enthusiastic scientists that could
grab the attention of the children, please do let me
know.
There have been some excellent practical science lessons
across the school this term; I know that both Year 2
and Year 5 have enjoyed their properties and uses of
materials topics, and investigating electricity has been a
big hit in Years 4 and 6, but I’d like to send a special
mention to Mr McAulay and Year 3 for their innovative
lesson on the rock cycle using Starburst –
inspiring, enlightening and edible!
Finally, as a keen gardener I would like to extend
grateful thanks to Miss Irlam, mother of Hugo, for
all her assistance with our school garden area this
term. I hope that you have noticed the fruits of her
labours around the school
NEW AUTHOR!
We are proud to celebrate the publication of Freedom the Bird. The book
is written by Noah Geary in Y6 and is a tale of love, peace and
forgiveness. Noah was inspired to write by the conflict in the Ukraine. One
of our school values is courage and we often discuss courageous advocacy
and standing up for what is right – what an inspired way to do it Noah!

YEAR 4 MUSIC
This year, Year 4 have had the privilege of learning a brass
instrument with Mrs Landon and Mrs McDonald. Whilst a
few might have felt a little nervous at the start of the
year, they soon started to see progress and they have
developed a real love of music. Their performance at the
end of year highlighted their progress and talent and it was
a wonderful celebration.
Thank you to Mrs Landon and Mrs McDonald for giving up
their time to teach us.
SCOOTFIT
A big thank you to Aria who entered Cheshire East’s Clean
Air poster competition and won! The prize was a day with
Scootfit so we finished the school year with every class
enjoying an hour outside using the scooters and ramps. A
brilliant way to finish the school year!

PLATINUM JUBILEE
This term, we had the joy of celebrating Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. Staff endeavoured to provide a week that
the children would never forget.

Our ‘Dance Through the Decades’ video can be found here
Our National Anthem can be found here.

YEAR 6 LEAVER’S
On Friday 15 th July, Year 6 lead a Leavers' Service at St
Oswald's Church. They recalled the values they have learned
throughout their time at primary school and their memories of
friendship. Each child had a candle to remember to let their light
shine as they move to their secondary schools. It was lovely to
celebrate their time with us in church along with their parents and
we wish them all every success in the future.
Loving God, let me be strong today as I
leave primary school,
as I meet new people in new places.
Make me brave when I am worried,
show me how to learn from everyone around
me,
and help me to do my very best.
Amen.

We also had the pleasure of attending the Diocese Leavers’ Service at Chester Cathedral. It was a beautiful service and a
lovely opportunity to celebrate with other schools. We also made some new friends along the way!

Y1 NEWS
It has been another fantastic term in Year. There have been so many highlights...
A highlight from Summer 1 was our Seaside Day inspired by our key
text, The Secret of Black Rock. As the song goes ‘We do like to be
beside the seaside’ and if this is not possible then a seaside day at school
will suffice!
First, we considered the following questions:
What do we mean by the seaside? Why did some places become
seaside resorts? Which seaside areas do people visit today and why?
Next, we explained that while we know a lot about our own experiences
of the seaside and can talk about them and share photographs we also
need to consider what seaside holidays were like in the past:
How do we know about something that happened beyond living memory?
Why did people start going to the seaside at this time? How holidays
changed over time within the last 100 years?
To help answer these questions and develop or History skills, we looked
at a gallery of seaside posters/photographs /postcards from Victorian
times, we helped Grandma sort her photos and wrote postcard from a
seaside holiday in the past. We used this information to write a postcard
as though we were on a seaside holiday in the past, taking park in
activities such as donkey rides, promenading along the pier and being
transported to the water in a swimming machine for a swim. Our final
activity helped us to answer the following question: Why did people go
on seaside holidays 100 years ago? Having looked at posters advertising
holidays from 100 years ago we Sorted statements into true and not
true from the advertising evidence before filling in speech bubbles
describing why people went on holiday 100 years ago.

Our Design Technology work has involved researching, designing, making and
evaluating playground equipment. We started with a research trip to the park and
observed the shapes and materials used to create the playground equipment. We
carried out a survey to find the most popular equipment before creating our
design briefs. With a partner we created our playground models and ensured that
these fit our design brief. The making process involved using art straws as, from
our research process, this was the most effective. Finally we evaluated our models
against our briefs and we think you will agree, they look very professional.
On Pirate Day we had a class full of captains and shipmates from across the
seven seas rather than Year One children... Throughout the day we completed a
range of art and geography activities. You can see pictures of the fun we had
below.
In Art we started by looking at the work of Chris Gryder, in particular the tiles
he creates. We looked at the patterns and textures, the colours, and the nature
that he takes his inspiration from. We were able to discuss the parts of his work
that we like and why we like them. Following on from this we worked on our
sketching skills, producing four different sketches of shells. The first was an observational
drawing, for the second sketch we could not take our pencils off the paper
and created line drawings, the third involved using only patterns and mark
making rather than lines and finally we created a sketch from memory with our
eyes closed! Next, we looked at how we could print shells and make marks in clay
in the style of Chris Gryder. We had to think about the patterns and textures he
creates with lines and marks and tried our ideas out in clay before creating our
final designs on paper. We then created our Chris Gryder inspired clay tiles.
In the afternoon we looked at positional language and how to direct someone
around a grid using the following language: forwards, backwards, left turn and
right turn. After practically trying this out while giving friends instructions outside,
we went on a hunt for treasure! We were given a map with a set of instructions,
we had to follow the instructions to find the second map, then the third and
fourth. Finally, the fourth map led us to the treasure and our pirate helpers
worked hard to dig it up for us to enjoy.
Y2 NEWS
What a wonderful final term it has been in Year Two!
During this term, Year Two have thoroughly enjoyed two exciting trips. In May, we travelled to
Nantwich to enrich our history learning; we were focusing on the Great Fires of London and
Nantwich. Through looking at artefacts, models and replicas then participating in a walking tour
and drama activity, we considered why the fire would burn so easily and spread so quickly. We
especially enjoyed the walking tour and the chance to recognise features such as St Mary’s
church (where many people sheltered during the fire); The Bear Hotel (from which four wild
bears were released during the fire); Queen’s Aid House and the plaque to say thank you to
Queen Elizabeth for her help after the fire; the pillory, where we sang “Nicholas Brown burned
down the town!” This helped to inspire some wonderful recount writing back at school.
The highlight of Year Two for many children has been our exciting residential to Tattenhall. The
first activity of the residential was pond dipping. Working safely in our groups, we were able to
catch and identify a variety of creatures, including: newts, tadpoles, blood worms, freshwater
shrimp, pond skaters, water mites, water beetles and a waterlouse! We thoroughly enjoyed the
rotation of three activities during the afternoon: problem solving, a low ropes course and ziplining.
We were so proud to see all 30 children completing the zipline and it was the highlight of the
residential for many of the class. In addition to the confidence displayed as children scaled the
ladder and shouted with joy as their feet left the platform, it was wonderful to see the teamwork
shown when children were belaying or cheering for their friends. For the final activity of
the day, we all sat around the campfire as we created sparks with a flint and steel to light cotton
wool, sang songs around the campfire and toasted marshmallows. After playing outside, singing
“Happy Birthday” to Mr Cotton and watching a film, it was time for bed. How exciting it
was to share a dormitory with all our friends! On Friday, we walked the Millennium Mile, spotting
several physical and human features on the way; this walk ended with a play in the park.
To conclude our trip, we travelled to Utkinton St Paul’s CE Primary School. It was so lovely to
be welcomed by another CDAT school to enjoy a long playtime together. Year Two were an
absolute joy to take on residential and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Our computing unit for this term was entitled ‘Data handling: International Space Station’ – it
was just as exciting as it sounds! Our favourite activity was learning all about how computers
help humans to survive in space and we delighted in the opportunity to virtually explore the ISS.
Next, we needed to create digital drawings of essential items for life in space. It was pleasing to
see how our talent for digital drawings had improved since the autumn term. After learning
about the role of sensors in space, we were able to create algorithms for growing a plant in
space and interpret data about planets, linking to our science learning and our measurement unit
in maths.
Year Two have especially enjoyed their music learnin
World’ stopping in: England, Poland, China, Ghana
very exciting to learn songs from around the world,
Our particular favourites have been ‘Tanczymy Lab
and we have enjoyed the call and response elements
Our art and DT lessons this term have produced lot
been using levers and linkages to create moving mons
process, adding their split pins to create an effective
ster’s mouth before adding decorations to make each
focused on the work of L.S. Lowry, thinking particu
‘Brereton at play’ are inspired by Lowry’s work but
volved layering to create a collage effect.
A particular highlight for this term has been our sup
staff vs Year Six rounders, Reception, Year One an
dance, team building and rounders skills. During our M
something new so we were introduced to Danish long
ers and baseball. To end our week, we took part in a
session we learnt how to spin plates, use flower sticks
and work on other circus skills using the incredible res
A memorable moment this term has been the wonde
we created some fabulous portraits of Queen Elizabe
school. Our ‘dance through the decades’ performanc
beautifully with beaming smiles on their faces and thi
Year Two, we each wrote our own letters to Queen
that each child wanted to share about themselves. W
Brereton post box and were absolutely thrilled to rece
posh envelope was a commemorative Platinum Jubilee
our well wishes. We loved the two pictures of Quee
letter from one of Queen Elizabeth’s ladies in waiting
er and we will always remember the Platinum Jubilee
Year Two, it has been an absolute joy to teach you
know that you will continue to shine in Year Three.
20

g this half term as we travelled ‘Round the
and Australia. It has been interesting and
some of which have been in new languages.
ada’ (Poland) and ‘Kye Kye Kulay’ (Ghana)
of these songs.
s of work to be proud of. In DT, we have
ers. The children diligently followed the
linkage system to open and close the monmonster
look very unique. In art, we have
larly about perspective. Our pieces, entitled
involve a lot more greenery and have inerb
sports week. After an afternoon of
d Year Two enjoyed a rotation of activities:
ultiflex session, we were encouraged to try
ball which was a mix between cricket, roundvery
exciting circus skills session. In the
to perform tricks, balance peacock feathers
ources.
rful jubilee celebration. Across the school,
th which we have proudly displayed around
e was simply marvellous; Year Two danced
s will be a moment to remember forever. In
Elizabeth full of questions and information
e posted these to Buckingham Palace in the
ive a reply a few weeks later. Inside the
card containing a message of thanks for
n Elizabeth on this card. There was also a
. This was a delivery to be treasured forev-
.
all this year. You are all superstars and I
YEAR 3 NEWS
We have had a fantastic year in
Year 3. The children have worked
incredibly hard and should be very
proud of their efforts this year. We
have enjoyed two very memorable
trips to complement our Romans and
Tudors topics as well as some wonderful
opportunities such as our various
sporting events in Sports Week
like circus skills and dance. It has
been a great year for hook lessons in
English too- one particular highlight
was when the Iron Man crashed
through the Reception outdoor area
and created a huge footprint in our
forest area! Have a wonderful summer
everyone and well done for an
excellent year! I know you will all be
superstars in Year 4!
22

Y4 NEWS
e have had a very busy summer term in Year 4, beginning with our first ever residential to
York which was a great success! We learnt so much about the Vikings and made everyone
very proud of us for super behaviour and showing our school values the entire trip.
We have enjoyed so many different lessons this term, including our 2 weeks of daily swimming.
Here are some of our highlights.
Our English unit allowed us to research some influential figures then create a biography on
their lives. We have written about a variety of people from Florence Nightingale to Lionel
Messi and are all very proud of our work.
We enjoyed using lots of different resources in Geography to find out about volcanoes of
the world. Our map reading skills and knowledge of continents have improved greatly!
We have enjoyed our D&T unit of making slingshot cars, it has been lovely to see everyone
working so well in groups to create their models.
"I found RE really interesting because we learnt about Hinduism and their different beliefs
and the many roles of their god, Brahman." - Lucie
"I have loved using equipment to make circuits in science. I saw the electricity going through
it and we have experimented with other materials to make bulbs brighter and look at insulators
and conductors." - Joel
I also want to celebrate some of our successes in PE. Lots of children have taken part in
athletics competitions and although we didn't always win, the sportsmanship and support to
each other was a pleasure to see.
After such a busy term, I am sure everyone is in need of a well-deserved rest! Wishing you
all a fantastic summer and I look forward to seeing you all return as Year 5 in September.
23

YEAR 5 NEWS
In Year 5, we started summer term with the text, The
Lost Book of Adventure. We wrote exciting adventure
stories about surviving in the wilderness. Then we used
the skills we learnt in forest school to write explanations
about how to survive in the wild. This half term we have
enjoyed the text, King Kong and have written some
fantastic dilemma narratives.
In Maths, the children have worked incredibly hard
understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals
and percentages, and applying their understanding of the
four operations to decimal numbers. Next, we moved onto
geometry learning how to measure and calculate angles.
Finally, we have been learning about measure- both
metric and imperial- and how to convert between them.
In Geography, the children learnt about the countries,
climate and geographical features of North America.
We started our History topic, the Aztecs, with a very
exciting trip to Cadbury World. This gave us a really
good foundation of knowledge about the Aztecs which
helped us with our learning in history in the subsequent
weeks.
In Science, we have been learning about materials and
considered how materials can be changed and
adapted. We have also learnt about life cycles.
This half term we had some virtual visits from the
British Red Cross. Our first session was about resilience
and we then had a very useful first aid workshop which
helped us to be more confident, willing and able to help
someone in an emergency. We learnt how to help with
burns, cuts and head injuries; then finally how to call
for help and support someone who is unresponsive.
In RE we have been learning about the importance of
community to Muslim people. We explored the 5 pillars of
Islam and how they impact on the daily life for Muslims.
In Spanish, we have learnt about school life and about
the calendar.
We would like to thank all the children for their hard
work and the parents for your support.
Y6 NEWS
This was always going to be an eventful term for Year 6 as
they complete their Primary education and look to the future.
All children have been to their respective schools: this year we
have children leaving for Sandbach Boys, Sandbach Girls, Congleton
High, Holmes Chapel High and somewhere in Spain! All
have been for transition days experiencing the dinner hall and
tutor groups as well as gaining their Bunsen burner licences.
This year also saw the return of SATS exams after two years
absence. The children took them in their stride, working hard
but remaining calm all week. They deserved their lollies at the
end of each morning. They also truly deserved their results
which were excellent.
Year 6 also put on an incredible show, taking on the ambitious
task of a musical. The children shone be it as stage crew, leading
roles or random naughty schoolchildren.
furthered our Maths problem solving, brushed up on our dialogue
writing in a country and western thriller, explored the
geology of Japan, discovered the story behind Divali, prepared
imaginary menus from post-WW2 rations, probed Mr Spilsbury’s
memories of his childhood in Brereton and completed the
Apprentice-style challenge of a mammoth cake sale.
In preparation for the trials and tribulations ahead, we have
been exploring the various parts of the brain and how they
respond to change and stress. This was via the myhappymind
Transition unit recently introduced to school.
To wrap it all, Year 6 had two Leavers’ Services- one at St
Oswald’s and one at Chester Cathedral. At both they spoke
and sang beautifully.
An incredibly productive Summer term for Year 6 and we wish
them all the very best for the future.
We have had time to learn something this term also. We have
RECEPTION
The children should be very proud of their achievements this term. They have worked hard all year but this term,
they have been learning what it is going to be like in year 1. They have worked on their handwriting, they are now
reading more fluently and becoming very speedy when recalling number facts.
On top of all this, we have been lucky to have some fabulous experiences.
Arthur’s horse came to visit
We became part of a circus, learning lots of circus skills. All the children were very good a spinning plates, but the
unicycle proved a little more difficult.
26

The children made their own smoothies, trying lots of fruits in the
process to find the perfect mix.
We have learnt to work as a team to cross the river of lava,
paint like Monet, grow our own seeds, even grow potatoes. More
importantly we have enjoyed plenty of ice lollies, and had a little
paddle and a little splash on the on the hottest day.
Have the best summer!
