A VIEW
FROM THE TOUCHLINE
I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The
Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this
afternoon for our game against Bradford Dudley Hill in
the National Conference League Division Two.
We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Dudley Hill to Woolston and
hope that they have had a safe journey across town and enjoy our hospitality today.
Our relationship with Dudley Hill goes right back to the very beginning of the National
League in the 1985-86 season, when they were one of the founder members along
with ourselves and eight other teams. Over the ensuing years we have had some great
meetings with both sides having their fair share of success.
We have had an inconsistent season in truth; one week we look very impressive but
then the next week we look very ordinary. We have suffered with not having a regular
side; having to make eight or nine changes each week doesn’t allow you to get any
familiarity with each other’s play. Hopefully over the remaining six games we can get on
a good run and cement our play off place; as we all know, once you are in the play offs
you have a great chance of getting promoted.
Today is ‘The Big Bash’ and we welcome our loyal supporters, sponsors and past
players to the game; we also have ‘All the Fun of the Fair’ on site providing fairground
attractions and ‘street food’ for your enjoyment. From 4pm the DJ will be in place and
then a live band will come on at 6pm. It really does promise to be a great day.
Our NWML side had a great win last time out over Thatto Heath Crusaders ‘B’ and
although they have no game today, they will be back in action next weekend at Leigh
East ‘A’ and that is followed by a home game against Liverpool Lizards on Wednesday
27th July, kick off 7.00pm. Please get along and support the boys.
You will see further in the programme the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow.
We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if
you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them
your support, either here at Monks’/Hillock Lane or in one of the away games.
Next weekend will see our Junior Section host a ‘War of the Roses’ Festival over two
days; on Saturday Under 7s-Under 11s will face Yorkshire opposition on Hillock Lane,
whilst on Sunday it will be the turn of our Under 12s-Under 15s to take centre stage on
the Limestone Construction Field, Monk Sports Club. If you can get along and support
our youngsters, then it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why
Enjoy the game

The National Conference League have announced that Irish Sportswear brand,
O’Neills, are to be their Sportswear Partner for 2022 and beyond.
This agreement will see O’Neills Irish International Sportswear provide touch-line
apparel for all 48 NCL clubs that will readily identify official team coaches, trainers,
physios, and substitutes. O’Neills will also provide a dozen water bottles for each club.
Speaking of the partnership, Paul Berry, O’Neills UK Sales Manager said, “When
Trevor and the committee asked us to consider working with the NCL, we jumped at
the chance. We identified an opportunity to help highlight official team touch line staff
through the provision of coloured t-shirts, in a similar way to that in Super League and
International Fixtures. It was felt it would help referees and match officials to better
manage the touchlines and we were happy to oblige.”
“The community game is the heartbeat of the sport and we have been fortunate
enough to have been able to do business with a number of the NCL clubs over the past
few years which has allowed us to build up a strong portfolio of customers within the
Rugby League sector.
You now see O’Neills kit at every level of Rugby League from grassroots Under 7s
teams right through to some of the top teams within Super League and the NRL.”
“Last year it was great to see St Helens being crowned Super League Champions
wearing our kit and for Penrith Panthers being crowned NRL Champions - also in
O’Neills kit, just ten years after we entered the UK market.”
“O’Neill’s Sportswear are proud to be known as the brand leader globally within Rugby
League and we certainly felt that we wanted to put something back into rugby league at
community level to support the clubs, their volunteers and their players.”
Chair of the NCL, Trevor Hunt, added “It is fantastic that a company of the standing of
O’Neills, is partnering the National Conference League, and we are delighted to have
them on board. Every one of the NCL clubs will benefit from this, and it will certainly
add yet another high-quality element to the presentation of our competition.”
We are looking for outgrown rugby boots
from sprogs to junior sizes!
Have your children outgrown their boots but they still
have plenty of games left in them?
Donate them to us and leave a little note in them to
pass on! i.e. won a competition tell the next child who
receives them to encourage them.
We will ensure these boots are passed on to
disadvantaged children who can’t afford to buy new
ones so they can continue playing the great game
and don’t miss out!

WOOLSTON ROVERS 28 HUNSLET WARRIORS 22
(NCL 18/06/2022)
Woolston Rovers bounced back to winning ways with a very hard-fought victory over Hunslet
Warriors in a very physical National Conference League Division Two encounter at the Limestone
Construction Field, Monks Sports Club.
Rovers got off to the best possible start by opening the scoring in the third minute when stand off
Theo Holt put second row Paul Alcock through a gap and he powered over on the right. Full back
Aaron Barber converted but then thirteen minutes later Hunslet had second row Dillon Thornton
dismissed for direct contact to the head whilst Rovers centre Kieran Moore was shown a yellow
card for running in.
Just after the midway point of the half a handling error by Rovers on the visitors twenty metre line
and Warriors winger Jake Corney picked up the loose ball and raced eighty metres to score on
the left. Stand off Jordan Gale converted to level the scores and then five minutes later Hunslet
hooker McKenzie Taylor combined with Gale to find full back Tyler Dargan linking into the line and
he went through a gap to score on the left.
Eight minutes before the break Rovers hooker Adam Files was tackled twenty metres out and
a quick play the ball on the last tackle saw loose forward Ryan Brown go from dummy half and
stretch out to score at the side of the posts. Barber added the conversion to give his side a narrow
12-10 half time advantage.
Two minutes into the second half good play by Rovers scrum half Dec Leonard and Holt paved
the way for prop forward Harry Files to use his strength and twist in the tackle to score under the
posts. Barber converted and five minutes later a lovely kick out wide by Holt bounced awkwardly
but winger Tom Byrne was able to knock the ball into the path of Moore who scored in the right
corner.
Rovers moved further clear when some slick passing created room for Moore to return the favour
and put Byrne over in the right corner. Barbed converted from the touchline to put Rovers in
command but the visitors refused to lie down and quick hands stretched the Rovers defence and
Dargan collected a fine pass from Gale and raced away to score on the left. Gale added the conversion
to give hope to the Leeds outfit.
The game became scrappy for the final ten minutes with both sides guilty of several mistakes but
then right on the stroke of full time the Warriors went over again when Taylor found second row
Dale Bateson who scored on the left. Gale added the conversion to make the scoreboard look a
little more respectable but it was Rovers who were able to celebrate a deserved 28-22 success.
The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers loose forward Ryan Brown. He was very well supported
by second row Paul Alcock and centre Dan Fearnley.
