Porcelain Installation Guide 

Cutting, drilling & shaping 

2cm porcelain tiles 

One of the distinct benefits of porcelain tiles is that it lasts 

a long time, because it is a hard wearing and durable 

product. However, this does offer some challenges during 

installation where the tiles need to be cut to size, drilled & 

shaped, to give the best finish for your outdoor area. 

Tricky cuts in confined areas and tile chamfering and shaping can 

be achieved with smaller cutting and grinding diamond blades 

for use in a hand held grinder. These are great solutions for those 

finer details that can make or break a design. 

At N&C, we stock a wide variety of manual and electric 

cutting machines, such as the Rubi Professional tile cutting 

machines and diamond tools. 

Cutting with an electric, water fed, bench tile saw, such as 

the Rubi DC-250 Python, is the quickest and best way to 

cut 2cm porcelain tiles. The combination of sturdy support 

surface, powerful motor, large diameter diamond blade 

and water cooled system results in perfectly cut tiles with 

a crisp corner finish.

Most projects will also require holes in the tiles, for wires, 

pipes & conduits, but also to allow corners to be cut out of 

tiles. For this there is a wide size range of diamond hole 

saws for the job, which can be used wet or dry for the perfect, 

stress free finish. 

Wet fixing 2cm porcelain to a concrete slab involves mixing tile 

adhesive and grout, which is where high-torque paddle mixers 

come in to play. Not only do the make the job a lot easier and 

quicker, they ensure that the adhesive is mixed properly and 

evenly, to ensure maximum adhesive and grout performance. 

Installation options

The Nicobond Terra Level Pedestal System offers an innovative solution for the 

stable, high-quality and long-term fixing of raised floors using 2cm porcelain tiles.

The solution is a modular system designed to stack on top of each other to create

work should any slabs start to ‘rock’, by simply lifting the tile, adding a shim, and 

replacing the tile. 

Nicobond Terra Level Aluminium Rail System 

The Nicobond Terra Level Rail System extends the possibilities of elevated floors, 

offering the best quick fit, long term solution for elevated 2cm porcelain floors. 

Rail systems can be used on any project, but the true benefits are realised when 

used for larger areas than a domestic patio or balcony and is predominantly for 

commercial applications. The first benefit is speed of fit. The introduction of a rail 

significantly reduces the number of pedestals needed by removing the need for a 

pedestal at all slab corners and opens the commercial viability of installing plank 

shaped 2cm tiles in a staggered/ brick bond format. 

The 25mm high aluminium rail profile is very strong and the 2.4m long anodised 

pieces can be joined end to end, as ‘T’ junctions and even vertically to create 

complex rail designs to suit all projects. The clever connectors will allow elevated 

floors to span drainage gullies and are strong enough to create permanent step 

systems, even in commercial environments. Unlike other rail systems, it is also not 

necessary for a ‘perimeter frame’ to be created, as the introduction of bonded edge 

components enable this and help reduce costs. 

This innovative rail system incorporates many unique features including twist-lock 

tile supports and Alu-klip pedestal heads, both fast fit solutions that do not need 

tools or fixings. The clever system also enables to wall, covered edge & step 

solutions suitable for demanding commercial applications.

A flawless porcelain paved area needs precision fixing. Ensuring that 

‘super flat’ surface is created is easy when using a clip & wedge tile 

levelling system. 

The system uses a clip that is placed in the grout join and a wedge to 

level adjacent tiles while the adhesive is still wet. This will align the tile 

surface so there are no ‘lips’ or raised edges across the floor. 

During the installation , the wedges can be tightened by hand or by using 

the application tool to achieve that sought after, perfect finish. This is 

important to prevent uneven surfaces and potential trip hazards, and to 

reduce puddling when raining.

The variation of colour, texture, and tone between individual ceramic tiles is referred to as ‘colour shade variation’. Variation in colour and shade is an 

inherent characteristic of any fired product and can actually enhance the character and beauty of the project. Shade variation is inherent in all tile products, 

including man-made tiles. Shade texture will vary from piece to piece within production runs are therefore given a variation (V) rating.
