<strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> was the fourth movement of the work Four Rituals for<br />

Percussion Quintet, Choir and Audience, which was commissioned by the<br />

percussion group NEXUS with funds from the Laidlaw Foundation. The first<br />

performance of this version was given by the Rosedale Soloists and Choir,<br />

soloists, and students from the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, under<br />

the direction of David Passmore at Rosedale United Church, Toronto on 15<br />

October 2005.<br />

Programme notes<br />

<strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> was originally the fourth movement of a multi-percussion<br />

work called Three Rituals for Percussion Quintet, Choir and Audience<br />

commissioned by the ensemble NEXUS. It is a piece I literally dreamt in its<br />

entirety one night and it took just a few hours the following morning to<br />

write on paper all its essential material. In this sense <strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> is perhaps<br />

the least ‘laboured’ of all my works to date. I knew from the outset that,<br />

because of its conceptual and non-timbre-specific sound, this work would<br />

have a life in a variety of orchestrations and for a variety of occasions. When<br />

Wayne Strongman, my long-time friend and colleague, asked me for a work<br />

for the inauguration of the wonderful new organ at Rosedale United Church<br />

in Toronto during the autumn of 2005, I decided that an appropriately<br />

orchestrated version of <strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong>—one that would utilize most of the<br />

human-artistic resources already solicited for that particular event—would<br />

be ideal for the occasion, so I set out to create this new version.<br />

<strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> is a musical ground that runs from beginning to end with various<br />

layers of orchestration added on top of each other as the work progresses—a<br />

favourite device of mine, which I have used on a number of occasions in<br />

my work in the past. The strictly repetitive, New-Age-like character of<br />

the music and the audience’s involvement in the music’s unfolding in a<br />

prescribed manner, are more recognizable as elements of a ritual rather<br />

than a work of concert music. The music’s hypnotic or ‘tuning’ effect on<br />

the audience as a whole and the various types or levels of participation<br />

that are available to the listeners (and some of the performers) suggest a<br />

spirituality that is not only inwardly but also communal, which is the kind<br />

of spirituality I am personally devoted to. In such a work the personal and<br />

communal experience far outweighs the compositional accomplishment of<br />

the individual creator and this balance—like with any ritual, or even folk and<br />

pop musics—allows the participants to be and feel central to the activities<br />

about them, as opposed to being and feeling passive witnesses to some<br />

creative genius at work.<br />

Increasingly, this is the type of music and musical function that I am attracted<br />

to and feel spiritually and humanly redeemed in being associated with.<br />

Of course, being a composer of concert music, I am also involved with the<br />

more conventional activity of composition for the concert stage and other<br />

media but it is during those rare moments, when human beings get closer<br />

to one another and to their Maker through music, that I feel that my<br />

calling is being answered perhaps a bit less imperfectly. Even such a modest<br />

performance on my part is full of spiritual delights. The present version of<br />

<strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> is dedicated to my dear friend Wayne Strongman, while the larger<br />

work (or ritual) is dedicated to the <strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong> Himself: the Lamb of God, who<br />

has shed His blood for the redemption for all of us and who, with this blood,<br />

has purchased for humanity the opportunity of the past 2000 years, the<br />

Piscean Eon.


Performance Notes<br />

Choir:<br />

At the commencement of the performance, all choir members should be at<br />

the back of the church or concert space preferably in the portico or lobby,<br />

or behind the back seats of the audience. The choir is initially split into<br />

two groups: sopranos and tenors at one side and altos and basses at the<br />

other. In the beginning of the performance, the choir starts intoning the<br />

spoken “mantra” with the audience. Then at each choral entry (basses first,<br />

followed by the altos, the sopranos and the tenors) the corresponding choral<br />

section begins a slow procession towards the stage, the basses followed by<br />

the sopranos walking down one of the side aisles, the altos followed by the<br />

tenors down the opposite side aisle.<br />

The choreography of the procession should be as follows. The forearms<br />

of each singer should be extended forward with the palms of the hands<br />

facing upwards in a form of supplication (like when intoning the Lord’s<br />

Prayer in a Catholic Church). For each four-measure phrase of the music, the<br />

singers should make three coordinated (and ritual) steps forward. One at<br />

the downbeat of each of the first three measures, pausing in a still position<br />

during the fourth measure and then advancing again in a similar manner<br />

during the next four-measure phrase. This should be repeated until the<br />

choir reaches the altar/stage. Depending on the size of the choir and the<br />

architecture of the space, the singers can line up in front of (but not on)<br />

the stage, if they do not block the view of the other performers on stage;<br />

or they can line up behind the performers on stage; or they can line up at<br />

the sides of the performance space towards the front, if there is no other<br />

practical way of accommodating their number. Depending on the distance<br />

between the back and the front of the church or concert hall, the size of<br />

each processional step should be such as to enable the choir to reach the<br />

front not before all four voices have sounded together and have completed<br />

their individual cycles.<br />

The choir should do their part from memory. There isn’t really that much to<br />

remember: just the four-measure phrase which is different for each vocal<br />

group and the dynamic profile of the overall texture at specific moments<br />

in the work. The overall volume should grow very gradually from the<br />

beginning of the work until the first climax just before measure 113. At<br />

measure 113 (Letter F) the overall intensity should subside to a mezzo-forte,<br />

and start building again until the final climax of the work at measure 177<br />

(Letter J). At this point everyone but the tenors should stop singing. The<br />

tenors should continue to repeat their part by gradually turning away from<br />

the audience in a coordinated fashion and by gradually covering their mouth<br />

with the palm of their hand. By the last repetition of “Miserere nobis” their<br />

mouths should be completely covered and their back turned completely to<br />

the audience.


Audience:<br />

Before entering the church, or performance space, each member of the<br />

audience should be given their audience part along with the program.<br />

At the commencement of the performance, the audience is ‘taught’ their<br />

repeated mantra on the words “<strong>Agnus</strong> <strong>Dei</strong>” by the choir and the performers<br />

on stage. The audience should be instructed beforehand to whisper the text<br />

as loudly as possible but with no throat vibration, that the sound is very<br />

‘breathy’ with pronounced consonances but no vocalizing. Gradually, as the<br />

texture becomes more complex and the overall sound gets louder, some<br />

members of the audience (particularly those with a bass voice) could begin<br />

to introduce vocalizing in the lowest possible register of their voice. The<br />

intoning should be ritual, heartfelt and profound, as opposed to a ‘game’<br />

in audience participation. The overall dynamic profile of the audience part<br />

should match that of the choir, falling somewhat in volume at measure 113<br />

(they may be told beforehand that they have to ‘pull back’ a bit when the<br />

saxophone starts playing) and subsiding after the final climax at measure<br />

177. The conductor may turn around at the very end to ‘cut-off’ the<br />

audience precluding further repetitions of the mantra.<br />

Saxophone and organ:<br />

The organ registration is left for the player to decide. The timbre complexity<br />

of the instrument at any given point should match the overall dynamic level.<br />

The small note heads indicate passages that may be replaced by more<br />

spontaneous improvisation. The saxophone and the organ will need to work<br />

out their improvised parts beforehand so that they are complimentary in<br />

style and density, particularly where free improvisation is indicated in the<br />

score. If the performers are expert improvisers they may want to dispense<br />

entirely with the written-out part and create wholly original material which<br />

is stylistically consistent with the notated part. The limit of how many<br />

times Letter I should be repeated should be the improvisational ability and<br />

musical imagination of the performers and the kind of ‘connection’ the<br />

improvisation is establishing with the audience. The conductor can decide<br />

and indicate the number of repetitions during the performance based on<br />

these factors or make a decision beforehand.<br />

Percussion:<br />

One percussionist playing a bass drum and a tubular bell at the very end<br />

is required plus an unspecified number of volunteers who play on various<br />

gongs and tam-tams throughout the performance. The tam-tam part<br />

indicated in the percussion score is meant for these volunteer players. A<br />

large array of gongs (Thai and other gongs of different pitches) and tamtams<br />

of various sizes should be arranged in a circle (or rectangle) around the<br />

audience. Soft mallets should be used and the instruments played very softly


so that the higher inharmonic partials do not overpower the texture, except<br />

at the downbeat of measure 177, the climax of the work.<br />

The bass drum should be placed so that the drum heads are perpendicular.<br />

The percussionist should play with a soft mallet on the front head of the<br />

drum and with a very thin flexible mallet with no head (like a stick from a<br />

branch) which is played staccato by the left hand on the back head of the<br />

drum in the manner of the dhaoul or similar Balkan drums. During the buildup<br />

towards the final climax, the drummer may choose to improvise on the<br />

drum in patterns that maintain the emphasis of the written-out part but are<br />

more intuitive and imaginative than what is in the score.
