PROUD: Rolleston School pupil Emma Bolton has brought home the Canterbury
Primary School Boccia Championships title for the second year in a row.
ROLLESTON School pupil Emma
Bolton does not let cerebral palsy
get in her way.
The 12-year-old has claimed the
Canterbury Primary School Boccia
Championships title for the second
year in a row, and is now gearing up
for the South Island Halberg Games
where she will compete in boccia,
athletics and swimming.
Mother Anna Bolton said her
daughter loved being active, and
always found an alternative way
to do things. While she had used a
walker when she was younger, she
now walked unaided.
However, her mild cerebral palsy
meant she continued to struggle
with her balance and doing a lot
of physical activities that other
children took for granted, such as
climbing around a playground.
Bolton said boccia had been good
for Emma’s hand/eye co-ordination,
and gave her a sport to play where
she was not having to keep up with
able-bodied children.
Competing against 10 other
pupils from schools around Canterbury,
Emma won the 2022 competition
last week.
“I feel proud that I won it again
and get to bring the plaque home for
another year,” Emma said.
Boccia is a sport similar to bowls
and pétanque, played by people with
cerebral palsy or impairments that
affect motor skills. Players must
throw or roll leather balls as close
as possible to a white target ball,
known as the jack. The player, pair
or team with the most balls near the
jack is the winner.
“I like that you can sit and throw
a ball, so anyone can do it,” Emma
said.
“You just have to learn to be accurate
and learn some strategies.”
Emma will go to the South Island
Halberg Games in October. She
also recently placed in athletes with
disability at the Canterbury Schools
