Cam Jones began the 21-month ban imposed by the Racing Integrity Board on June 30. He cannot rejoin the industry until March 29, 2024. Jones, who trained at Woodend Beach, belatedly admitted injecting Johnny Nevits with Flexidin, a peanut oil-based medication usually used to treat iodine deficiency in sheep and cattle, on December 10 last year before transporting the horse to Addington Raceway. Harness racing rules stipulate horses cannot have any substances administered – by injection or oral syringe – within a day of racing. The maximum penalties are a $20,000 fine and/or being disqualified or suspended from holding a training licence for a period not exceeding five years. Jones initially denied injecting Johnny Nevits when RIB investigators swooped on his stable and witnessed him depositing an item into a wheelie bin. He claimed it was a vaping canister but a search of the bin found a syringe. Fellow trainer Andrew Fitzgerald told investigators he saw Jones holding an empty syringe but had not seen him injecting Johnny Nevits. Once the horse arrived at the track a RIB vet detected an Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Jones gets 21-month ban for injecting horse BREACH: Harness racing trainer Cam Jones has been banned from the sport for almost two years after injecting a horse shortly before it was to race at Addington. injection site on Johnny Nevits jugular vein. Jones admitted the breach in April and told a RIB penalty hearing on June 21 he lied because he was aware he would lose his training licence if he confessed. When releasing their judgement, the RIB considered Jones’ offending was further aggravated by the “deceptive conduct he engaged in once his actions had been detected”. “This showed that he was clearly aware that his conduct was in breach of the rules . . . In his initial interview with an RIB investigator, he maintained that he had not injected Johnny Nevits, and challenged the RIB to prove that he had. “This does make Mr Jones’ expression of remorse at the penalty hearing sound a little hollow.” Jones said he injected Johnny Nevits so the gelding was not a “hot sweaty mess” before it raced. Flexadin is not a banned substance but the RIB decision said an informant “contended that the only viable reason for administering a substance to a horse by hypodermic syringe, on race-day and shortly before a race, was to obtain some form of benefit”. Jones said Johnny Nevits received a dose early in the week it was due to race but staff had neglected to administer it in his absence. When he returned to the stable after the birth of his child he decided to inject Johnny Nevits about 2-½ hours before it was due to race but insisted he was “not trying to get an edge”. However, the adjudicators decided Jones administered a substance to benefit the horse on race day – in this instance, “to enable the horse to settle during its race, and give of its best”. Johnny Nevits was scratched from the race and subsequently retired due to a tendon injury and rehomed through the Canterbury-based Stable to Stirrup programme. It was also one of two horses injected by disgraced Woodend Beach harness racing trainer Jesse Alford. Alford was banned for seven years in May 2021 after he was caught injecting Johnny Nevits and Jimmy Cannon with formalin, a banned substance used to control bleeding, two hours before they were due to race at Addington Raceway three months earlier. A junior driver, who started training in September 2020, Jones has recorded 16 winners and 15 placings from 68 starts, earning $111,958 in stake money. He usually had between 6-8 horses in his team and wound down his operation aware a ban was imminent. The solitary horse under his care was moved within 24 hours of the penalty being imposed.
