“Being a physical and tough
game, it was nice to be able to
rotate out our two props at halftime
and we’re lucky we don’t
lose much with it.”
Southbridge manager Chris
McMillan said an injury crisis
had ruled out 13 players across
the club’s top two teams.
“I’ve been managing the team
for 20 years and I’ve never had
this many players out in one
season,” he said.
“We’re not a full-strength side
at the moment, but we still have
a top side that is good enough to
win the game, but on the day we
didn’t.”
Prebbleton, Southbridge and
Springston will now battle it out
for the last two semi-final spots
against top qualifiers Darfield
and Waihora.
In other matches, unbeaten
Waihora thrashed Springston 58-
0, Lincoln beat Hornby 50-17 and
Rolleston beat West Melton 19-15.
Said Rolleston coach Matt
Cawley: “Our defence just stood
firm, held tight and ultimately
won the game. I think it’s a game
where the defence won it rather
than the attacking side.”
It was a fitting milestone win
for lock Alex ‘Diesel’ Hines, who
brought up his 100th division
one game for the club.
“He’s one of the fellas who
hadn’t played all year and when
he heard that we were short he
put his hand up and said ‘yip, I
can help out’,” Cawley said.
“He epitomises the club and
goes about his work letting his
actions speak for what he thinks.
He’s not the biggest bloke on the
field from a physical point of view
but has one of the biggest hearts.”
This Saturday all eyes are on
unbeaten teams Darfield and
Waihora who will face off in a
top of the table clash.
