Prebbleton ends 15-year losing streak<br />

PREBBLETON ended a 15-year<br />
drought against Southbridge on<br />
Saturday to move into third spot<br />
in Ellesmere senior rugby, with<br />
two rounds remaining in the<br />
Coleman Shield competition.<br />
In another milestone, Rolleston<br />
scored their first win of the season,<br />
beating West Melton 19-15<br />
– a great tonic for veteran Alex<br />
Hine’s 100th game.<br />
Prebbleton’s 21-11 victory was<br />
their first win over Southbridge<br />
since 2007, and the rematch<br />
of last year’s grand final was a<br />
physical game that ended with a<br />
tussle right on fulltime.<br />
“It is a game where both teams<br />
play with a lot of pride, a lot of<br />
passion, and it spilled over at the<br />
end there, but that’s what happens<br />
at the end of a tense game,”<br />
Prebbleton coach Dave Kettles<br />
said.<br />
“We’ve had a lot of close losses<br />
(against Southbridge), so it’s nice<br />
to get one on the other side of the<br />
ledger.”<br />
The match was without a try<br />
for three quarters of the game,<br />
with both teams’ first five-eighths<br />
kicking penalties for points<br />
until Prebbleton’s fullback<br />
Todd Struthers capitalised on a<br />
Southbridge mistake to claim<br />
the match’s first try in the 66th<br />
minute.<br />

had claimed the match’s first<br />
points by successfully kicking<br />
two penalties and securing a 6-0<br />
lead after the opening 20 minutes.<br />
But Ted Coleman was also<br />
on target, landing three penalty<br />
goals to give Prebbleton a 9-6<br />
lead after 50 minutes.<br />
Said Kettles: “I think both<br />
teams’ defence was outstanding<br />
– a division one game going<br />
for 66 minutes to score a try,<br />
that’s a testament to both teams’<br />
defence.”<br />
Southbridge kept in the fight<br />
with a touchdown eight minutes<br />
later, winning a lineout 30 metres<br />
from Prebbleton’s try line to work<br />
the ball quickly across the field to<br />
wing Tom Turner, who scored in<br />
the corner to make it 16-11.<br />
Hooker Jack Walsh sealed<br />
Prebbleton’s win with the try in<br />
the 78th minute.<br />
Kettles put the win down to<br />
applying pressure plus skillful<br />
kicking from Coleman and halfback<br />
Yuta Ohata, and a strong<br />
reserve bench.<br />
