BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the

Time to have a check of your winter wardrobe

PLANTING natives in
New Zealand supports
the many native species of
insects, birds and lizards
that are ecologically suited
to the plants through
evolution over millions of
years.
Planting an exotic such
as an oak that has not
evolved in these lands
mean that few species can
use its resources – the
squirrels, badgers, jays,
voles and woodpeckers
that are oak specialists
are not in New Zealand
to utilise the acorns and
wood.
However, one species
that is found here is the
European oak leaf-miner
Phyllonorycter messaniella.
It is likely to have been
introduced inadvertently
with the oaks. This species
is a small moth, just 4mm
long with a 7-9mm wingspan.
It has distinctive
brown and white forewing
markings.
The oak leaf-miner is
from Europe but has been
introduced into Australasia.
In New Zealand the
peak flight time is April.
Pale yellow larvae feed
on several oak species,
European beech, chestnut
and European hornbeam.
They mine or tunnel
in host leaves, usually
between two lateral veins.
