Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Harpoons on the Bay on Beach Drive in North Cape May.
And yes, it is right across the street from the Delaware Bay!
The vibe: This is a beautiful spot and will really make you feel like
you’re on vacation. We were only on our lunch break from work, but
even we felt like we were away on some fun getaway. We sat outside
under their canopy and were lucky to have a beautiful day with a nice
breeze coming off the water. They also have an outdoor area for seating
with sand to really pull together the beach vacation vibe. Plus playlist
they had over the sound system was a perfect fit and made for a very
enjoyable afternoon. We can’t wait to go back to catch a sunset and have
a couple of drinks — every cocktail that passed by looked delicious.
The server: Emily just started serving at Harpoons and she’s loving
every second. “I love talking to all the people that come through and it’s
a great time especially during sunset,” she says. It turns out that Harpoons
is Emily’s first serving job ever, but we never would’ve known
had she not mentioned it. She was wonderful and just an all-around
kind person to chat with. Emily also told us that she’s a big fan of the
panko-crusted onion rings. “They come on a tower, too which I think
makes it so much cooler.” We couldn’t have agreed more and it definitely
on the list for the next time we visit.
The food: Kayla, Nicole and Emma were really excited to try a new
spot, we had ordered takeout once before, but this was our first time
dining at the restaurant. Kayla went for the Nashville Hot Chicken
sandwich, Emma enjoyed a crab cake sandwich and Nicole was very
excited to try their turkey burger — it’s hard to find a restaurant that
serves them! Everything was delicious and lived up to all our expectations.
All that could’ve made it better was one of those beautiful-looking
cocktails... until next time.
The takeaway: Harpoons on the Bay serves lunch and dinner with a
side of beautiful bay views. They’re open daily and you can keep up with
their live music schedule online. They also offer Happy Hour from 3-6!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Leftover Whining of the Week: First,
this will be my third or fourth time
congratulating the Exit Zero crew
on the opening of Ferry Station, the
third and final nail in Jack Wright’s
coffi… I mean, the third and final jewel in Jack
Wright’s Infinity Gauntlet (Ferry Park), so
enough of that sentimental horse hockey ( yes,
I’m old enough to make Col. Henry Potter references).
Turns out one column was woefully
short to list all my grievances, so here is Week
Two of Things That Annoyed Me Last Week.
Cute as she is, I was getting a little
tired of seeing DeSatnick Realty receptionist
Abby Nagel every time I turned around.
Thursday mornings dropping of Exit Zero at
their Villas office, thrice in their Cape May
office on Cool Cape May delivery day because
a math error had me dropping off, picking up,
then re-dropping off dozens of 33 lb. boxes.
Cute AND nice. When all I wanted to do was
sweat and curse. Worst of all? I was going
to make an Abby Nagel/Abby Normal joke
but she’s probably too young to get it. These
kids today… (Young Frankenstein, Abby, it’s
a Young Frankenstein joke. Just… Google it.)
Passive-aggressive Plastic Bag of the
Week: I became intimately educated on the
care and feeding of paint roller brushes while
coating the floors and walls of Ferry Station
with various substances. As in, if you plan
on reusing one the following day, you need
to cover it with a plastic bag. Which I did. But
apparently not well enough, as I found my
loose, throw-it-on-there bag wound up and
tightened around the handle in a very hostile
manner. By, I suspect, a much more experi-
enced painter who viewed my more lackadaisical
bagging as akin to kicking his dog. (This
is a Mike DeMusz joke. If you know Mike, this
is pretty funny. If you don’t know Mike, well,
at least it only took 10 seconds to read that
paragraph.)
Also, save up on your plastic bags, kids.
They’ll be worth real money one day. Like my
19 Von Hayes Rookie Cards.
A week after Ferry Station opened, I was
on break between sets (for the uninitiated,
I am the best singer in town as long as you
don’t hear any other singers on Fridays and
Saturdays at Exit Zero and Mondays and
Tuesdays at Ferry Station) and there, at the
end of the long terminal entryway, sat a yellow
mop bucket. Mocking me. I could almost hear
it laughing as sharp violin music crescendo…
sorry, I was just a little triggered. I mopped
that floor several dozen times. It was like running
into Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers.
(I promise, I’ve watched movies and listened
to music made after 1985, but new stuff just
isn’t as good.)

make fun of her as often as possible.

Dropped off magazines at
Evolution Salon & Spa and stylist
Scott Mann commented, “A little
late today, huh?” Indeed, I was, as
they were delivered to US a little
later than usual. I began explaining
the ripple effect of 15 minutes
at 7am turning into an hour at
10am as traffic in the outlying
areas of my route, especially Rio
Grande, Villas and North Cape
May, gets thicker by the minute.
He cut me off mid-sentence, as
sharp as he would cut off my hair
if I had any. (I kid, of course.
Scott’s a good dude, I just wanted
to make that really long-winded
bald joke.)
The Cape Harbor Shell
restroom was, as ever, impeccably
clean and sanitary Thursday
morning. At least, it WAS…
A once-in-a-century Unholy
Trinity formed last Thursday night
when the entirety of the Cabal
of World’s Friendliest Stalkers
converged upon Exit Zero Filling
Station: Alex and Lynn Sosik,
Wendy and Randy Redelico,
Mike and Pam DelFranco. They
ate and drank, a couple of them
sang, and they filled our tip jar.
The devils! (Undertow loves them
all very much, but it really was a
little weird they all appeared on
the same night. I smell a Stranger
Things 5 plotline.)
As karmic pre-payback for
this joke, I accidentally tipped
myself a fake $5 bill after this
gig. The universe, she does have a
sense of humor.
Apparently they set a new
record at EZFS on Saturday,
serving 666 guests and confirming
what we all already knew;
manager Katie Dowe is the devil.
(Also, congratulations. Is this a
good time to ask for a raise?)
If you went to a medium-to-minimum
security prison
on some minor, white-collar
crime for, say 2-4 years, and that
prison had a grocery store, that
grocery store would be the Aldi’s
in Rio Grande.
My agent called. Just to talk.
Got into my truck the other
night to find a discarded, bloody
bandage on the floor. Now, I like
to take a drink now and then (all
the time), but not to the point of
forgetting where and when I was
wearing a bloody bandage, unless
I lost, like, a whole week or something.
So… the game is afoot!

quite as much on all the
great songs they play for me on
Thursday mornings (if you’re a
fan of 80s New Wave and alternative,
tune in 7-11am), but it really
is appreciated. To wit, check out

Fall in Love,” a fantastic song that
should have been a smash but
now you only get to hear on stations
like WCFA.
What the Hell of the Week:
I’m not giving numbers because
they’re too embarrassing, but
after multiple seven-plus day
work weeks, I hit a new low for
2022. Had one day off Sunday,
had two reasonable meals, and
woke up eight pounds heavier.
I punched a wall, went to work,
came home and was five-and-ahalf
pounds lighter. I mean…

If you didn’t love Harold Ramis, and
you don’t admire Jason Reitman, then
you may not have been moved by
Ghostbusters Afterlife. The movie isn’t
new — it was released in 2021. It was
recently announced that there will be a sequel
to the reboot in theaters by December 2023. It
only appears on the paid subscription channel
Starz, so if you didn’t see it when it was in
theaters it may be a challenge to catch.
Reitman’s work has been the subject of
many reviews here, but I don’t think I’ve really
taken the time to express my fondness toward
him. Let’s talk about his directing credits.
That’s where I was impressed by him the
most. OK, can’t gush on about Caddyshack
(his directorial debut in 1980), which gets a
few laughs but is kind of unwatchable today.
Watch it this weekend and tell me I’m wrong.
He had only 14 director credits, and he didn’t
bat a thousand. But he did better than the
average of most ballplayers today.
Ramis has three notable directing credits
to his name. Stuart Saves His Family (1995) is

a touching look at life inside a dysfunctional
family. Analyze This (1999) starred Robert De
Niro as a gangster with issues and Billy Crystal
as his therapist. But his masterpiece in direction
is Groundhog Day (1993), a fantasy comedy
which is often noted in my top 10 favorite
movies of all time. It tells the story of a narcissistic
news reporter who is trapped in the
same day over and over. Ramis is also given
credit for the screenplay along with Danny
Rubin. The main character in Ghostbusters
Afterlife is Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), granddaughter
of the original character portrayed
by Ramis. She resembles him a lot, a result of
expert casting and make up. That set me in a
good mood. It is in the end sequence that true
fans of the director are moved. I don’t want
to spoil anything, because I really hope people
watch this movie, but I will say that they
honor the memory of Ramis in a way that stirs
the imagination.
Reitman has several notable films to his
credit. He is the son of Ivan Reitman, one of
the creators of the original Ghostbusters. He
only has seven more director credits than
Ramis with four Oscar nominations. His
treatment of this storyline is far better than
many of the other movies in this franchise —
maybe even better than the original. Take the
time to take in Ghostbusters Afterlife. It’s a film
that proves there is life in many ways even
after all these years. Let me know what you

New Show At SOMA
The NewArt Gallery announces third art exhibition of the 2022 season
SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its
third art exhibition of the 2022 season,
featuring three regional solo
artists. “Unbound” by Jim Inzero,
“Summer Smiles” by Monica Nask and
“Anachronism” by Gary Schwartz will be on
display July 16 to August 14.
Inzero’s encaustic painting method utilizes
beeswax mixed with pigment and fused with
heat — he manipulates the wax pigment to create
paintings that glow with diffused light and
exude a powerful yet serene effect. Nask’s goal
is to capture the spirit of what she sees and uses
vibrant colors to communicate the feelings felt
by the seaside. Schwarts explores the theme of
anachronistic imagery, specifically morphing
Kodachrome color slides of the 19th through
21st centuries.
Art lovers are invited to attend an Opening
Artist Reception on Saturday, July 16 from 6
to 9pm. SOMA is located at 31 Perry Street in
Carpenters Square Mall, Cape May. For more

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Once you’ve crisped yourself at the
beach and scoped out the mall, consider
broadening your Cape May
experience by going on a Cape May
Bird Observatory field trip. Yes, it
will mean having to rise before noon. Up with
the birds you know, but CMBO’s leisurely
paced, information-packed “field trips,” are
bound to open your eyes to a whole new parallel
universe of discovery and wonder.
For North America’s 45 million bird
watchers, every day is a treasure hunt. It’s
Pokémon Go for real and every new bird species
you engage by sight or sound becomes
another token of achievement, a feather in
your cap. And the adventure only begins in
Cape May, North America’s most famous bird
watching destination.
Here are some fundamental dos and
don’ts. Arrive early and let the leaders know
you are new to this. They’ll offer you added
support to help locate target species. Wellbehaved
children are welcome and those
under 15 are free, otherwise there is a $10 fee.
Stay close to the leader so you can hear
their directions to birds but do not walk ahead
of the leader. Stop when they stop and try to
avoid shuffling your feet in gravel or leaves.
Your leader has heard a bird and is trying to
locate the vocalist. Yes, heard birds count on
your tally. For some species, like the raucous,
buffoonish, Yellow-breasted Chat, the song is
the best part, a run-on series of toots, whistles,
chatters, snorts and squeals. Another
local vocalist is Prairie Warbler, whose buzzy
song rises in pitch. Mostly yellow with black
goggles around the eyes, Prairie Warblers
habitually pump their tails and like to sing
from the topmost branches of a cedar or
shrub. Other birds like Indigo Bunting have
more complex vocalizations — a series of loud
clear, paired whistles, phonetically rendered,
“What, what? Where? Where? See it, see it.”
Males are an eye-searing blue and if your field
trip leader gets you onto one, the summer sky
hues will blow you back to a brain stem.
Vivid colors and arresting vocalizations
are just two of the reasons to watch birds.
Bird watching is a hobby enjoyed by a broad
cross-section of society and it is open to anyone
no matter your age, political disposition,
or belt size. Me? I started birding at the age
of 7 to get away from adults. It worked for
years and then, unaccountably, bird watching
became North America’s fastest growing
outdoor activity. Binoculars and a field guide
are all you need to gain access into this world
of discovery.

Sometimes it seems that Independence
Day comes a little too soon. June is
busy with weddings, Father’s Day,
proms, graduations, recitals and tournaments
— sometimes we barely have
time to think about summer before the fireworks
are over. Don’t worry — in Cape May,
you can enjoy that Fourth of July feeling all
summer long.
Celebrate some of the other important
dates in the summer of 1776. On July 8, the
document was read to New Jerseyans for the
first time, from the steps of a Trenton courthouse.
By August 2, most of the colonies had
ratified the Declaration. Mark September 9,
when the new nation’s name officially became
the “United States.” If you really need fireworks,
you can find them on the Wildwood
Boardwalk every Friday night at 10pm. For a
taste of America’s military history, visit the
Naval Air Station Wildwood Museum, located
in a World War Two hangar at the Cape May
Airport, 500 Forrestal Road. Featuring
hands-on exhibits and fun activities, this
rainy-day stalwart is a treat when the heat is
getting to you. Admission is $14 for adults, $10
for children, and free to active-duty military
with discounts for veterans. Hours are 10 to 4

Read the Declaration of Independence
aloud, even if it’s only to the mirror. From preamble
to “sacred honor,” this artful argument
will remind you that our imperfect union is
worth continuing to fight for. Or, read from
the Federalist papers. Take the kids to the
library for books about the nation’s founding
— a classic like “Johnny Tremain,” or a picture
book like “The Declaration of Independence
from A to Z.” Host a movie night — watch
Stripes for fun, or All the President’s Men for a
serious look at the fragility of democracy.
Help a Hamilton-loving teen research the history
behind the lyrics — our treasury department
really is intriguing. Sing “America the
Beautiful” or learn to play a period song, like
“Yankee Doodle,” on your favorite instrument.
Play patriotic marching music to help your
chores fly by.
Pack a proper beach picnic, complete with
a basket, cutlery, and a gingham tablecloth —
your favorite Cape May restaurant can supply
the food. Add candles to impress your friends
on social media. Or stock up on essentials
at Acme and fire up the grill for a traditional
feast of burgers and dogs. Sip a drink at Ferry
Park and contemplate the right to interstate
travel, enshrined in the Constitution, as the
ferry glides back and forth to the first state.

MAY came to the shelter as a stray and
although she is nervous at first with new people,
she will warm up after some time. She is
a sweet and gentle girl who loves to wander
around the yard, but not a big fan of toys. May
is new to walking on a leash, but learning. She
would be best in a family with older children
and a slow introduction to cats and dogs.
WENTZ was surrendered to the shelter when
his owner could no longer take care of him.
This handsome four-year-old boy is shy at
first, but when he warms up to you, he becomes
very affectionate. Wentz has excellent leash
manners and loves a brisk walk. He would do
best in a home that allows him patience and a
slow introduction to cats and dogs.
PARKER was found wandering along the
Garden State Parkway. He is a very happy boy
who has a great deal of energy. Parker loves
to play fetch in the yard and his leash skills
are wonderful which help with his desire for
long walks. Older children would be best for
Parker’s new family and he would be good in a
home with other dogs and cats.
