AUGUST 2022
SKERRYVORE :: USA Tour - see weblink below
for details. Back on the remote Scottish island of
Tiree in 2005, the raw but contemporary trad
quartet that formed Skerryvore could have only
dreamed that over the next decade they would
become a multi-award winning act that was
performing in over 25 countries worldwide and
featured as ambassadors for their country in an
International advertising campaign for Visit
Scotland. From those traditional roots the band
have developed both in size and sound to create
a unique fusion of their traditional music and
songs with the urban sounds of rock, pop and
funk. The band’s ability to fuse traditional
Scottish music and rhythms with a range of
other genres is a trademark of their distinctive,
high energy sound.
16 SEPTEMBER
MURDO MITCHELL :: At St Pancras Old
Church, London. Murdo Mitchell’s smooth and
haunting vocals move listeners through the
aching emotional experience of loss and
heartbreak, delving into themes of broken trust
and lost promises embodied by a dark,
captivating melody. ‘Ghosts’ delivers a painful
coming of age rhetoric set to a powerful,
thumping beat and the heavy tension of a cold
and lonely night. Murdo Mitchell’s new single
‘Ghosts’ is out now via Icons Creating Evil Art.
Lau comprises Kris Drever (vocals, guitar),
Martin Green (accordion, wurlitzer, keys,
together they effortlessly bridge the seemingly
diametrically opposed worlds of acoustic folk
tradition and post rock – electronics.
10 NOVEMBER
TAMZENE :: At Laylow, London. Tamzene spent
years busking contemporary pop songs which
taught her invaluable songwriting skills. Taking
cues from pop contemporaries such as Adele
and Alicia Keys as much as the classic voices
of Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin, her
vocal is bold and innately emotive, and truly
enraptures any audience. She is now touring
promoting her new EP, 'Details'.
HEAL & HARROW :: At Scottish Storytelling
Centre, Edinburgh (Festival Fringe). The 16th
and 17th Century Scottish Witch Trials were one
of the darkest periods of Scotland’s history. An
estimated 2500 people were executed, 80% of
which were thought to have been women. In this
new project 'Heal & Harrow', Rachel Newton
(The Shee, The Furrow Collective, Spell Songs)
and Lauren MacColl (Salt House, Rant) pay a
humanising tribute to these women while also
exploring historical beliefs in the supernatural
and modern day parallels in our society. Each
piece of music is based on specially
commissioned works by celebrated author Mairi
Kidd - tales inspired by and in remembrance of
real women who were persecuted and tried as
witches, and characters from the folkloric tales
and mythology enshrined in our oral culture.
mns REVIEWspotlight :: The Killers by Katy Whitelaw
The Killers at Falkirk Stadium
The Killers took to the
stage in early June at
Falkirk Stadium for their
much-anticipated gigs
following a two year wait,
following Covid
restrictions seeing the
concerts cancelled twice.
Originally scheduled for 2020 as the ‘Imploding
The Mirage’ tour in support of their sixth studio
album of the same name, the tour came off the
back of their seventh LP ‘Pressure Machine’
released last year.
Brandon Flowers and the band pulled out all the
stops to entertain with stunning 3D backdrop
video graphics, laser lights, confetti, streamers
and pyrotechnics accompanying the music.
Monday’s pre-gig saw some hiccups with fans
facing lengthy queues to get in and traffic
issues with local road closures, however these
issues seemed to be ironed out on Tue for a
seamless entry. In pure rock and roll epitome,
Falkirk Council had also received some noise
complaints (residents in Larbert 5 miles away
said they could hear the music) and advised the
band to turn it down on Tue night.
Following support act Supergrass, dramatic
sombre classical music provided a contrasting
build up to the explosion of sensational Las
Vegas staging and musical entertainment which
was to come. The band took to the stage and
Brandon sang to the crowd “Good to have you
with us, even just for the day… and the sun is
shining” before rocking the stadium with tracks
from their seven studio albums back catalogue,
including hits Smile Like You Mean It,
Somebody Told Me, When You Were Young and
All These Things That I Have Done.
Flowers – ever the charismatic, flamboyant and
sophisticated all-American frontman – cut a
dapper figure in a slick suit, his magnetic
presence and charm giving him a hold over the
crowd like an evangelical preacher spreading
the alternative/indie/pop sounds of the band
instead of the word of God.
Highlights included Flowers plucking ‘Kyle from
Edinburgh’ (drummer in Scottish band Retro
Video Club) out the crowd to join them on
drums for Reasons Unknown (he nailed it!), a
sing-along cover of The Proclaimers ‘500 Miles,
and a cover of ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your
Face’.
Streamers and confetti covered the ecstatic
crowd for the encore which included Human –
with a dazzling mosaic video backdrop of
dancers - and Mr Brightside – which got the
biggest reaction of the night - as the band built
up the tracks to a crescendo ending which was
well worth the two year wait.
GIGspotlight .....
Dougie MacLean continues to unite his global
audience with his special Perthshire concerts
GIGnotes ..... Two concerts at The Old Mill, Cardney Steading, Dunkeld on Wednesday 7 September -
6pm and 9pm. Tickets to physically attend the concert are on sale @ https://dunkeld.com/collections/event-tickets
* Catch-up with the 22 June concert (tickets for 7 Sept available later), £12, online @ www.dougiemacleanlive.com
Having so far completed 142 live online
concerts since March 2020 and being
overwhelmed by the global response,
Perthshire’s renowned singer songwriter
Dougie MacLean is extending the
concept to involve a select live audience
in a special Perthshire venue.
Over 3 million people in almost 60 countries are known to have tuned in
to view the live performances from his Old School, renamed his 'Global
Streaming Theatre’. His four camera broadcasts with great sound,
lighting and staging, transport viewers right into MacLean’s special
space where he encourages involvement in his much loved songs and
engaging stories, he has his global audience joining in choruses and
dancing to fiddle tunes.
Since the lifting of travel restrictions, he’s also been able to deliver
several live streamed concerts from his Old Farmhouse on the west
coast of the Island of Lewis.
"We really are trying
to evolve a new kind
of concert experience
bringing together the
venue audience with
the global
audience ..."
Audiences have watched on phone, tablet, laptop or Smart TV from
every continent, from Russia to India and Australia to Brazil as well as
every part of Europe and North America. There are volumes of
feedback every week on social media and email and calls to say how
much the concerts are giving people something to look forward to and
how they are appreciated in these often unpredictable and disturbing
times.
Dougie MacLean said: “Bringing the small audience in the Old Mill at
Cardney together with the global audience is the next step of the
adventure and I’m looking forward to it! In the future I can see those
who have been part of the global audience during their lockdown times
journeying to be part of a small special audience in Scotland!”
Dougie MacLean performed the first of these concerts on 22 June to a
limited audience in the Old Mill at Cardney Steading, a beautifully
atmospheric venue only a few miles from his home in Butterstone,
Perthshire. These two intimate gigs at one of Scotland’s most stunning
new venues was also streamed live to the ticketed ‘global’ audience of
enthusiasts for his music.
The Old Mill lies within a complex of different sized imaginatively
converted buildings making up The Steading on the beautiful Cardney
Estate, which is fast becoming a very sought after conference and
wedding venue. The concerts will include songs from MacLean’s vast
repertoire as well as a fiddle tune or two. And of course his well-loved
anthem Caledonia.
Dougie MacLean further explained: “This is an incredibly special
venue, not only is the surrounding landscape and view breath-taking,
the team at Cardney are really fantastic people and that shines through
in the good work they have done to develop the venue. We really are
trying to evolve a new kind of concert experience bringing together the
venue audience with the global audience that has grown during and
since the two years of on and off lock-down and cancellation of so many
concerts and festivals. ”
For the special venue audience at Cardney Steading there will be food
available to buy from the award winning Strathearn Food Company
onsite van, including their very popular seafood, burgers and traditional
fish and chips and those with tickets are being encouraged to come
early to take a walk in the area or sit and enjoy the beauty of the area.
HEAL & HARROW :: At Perth Theatre, Perth.
The 16th and 17th Century Scottish Witch Trials
were one of the darkest periods of Scotland’s
history. An estimated 2500 people were
executed, 80% of which were thought to have
been women. In this new project 'Heal &
Harrow', Rachel Newton (The Shee, The Furrow
Collective, Spell Songs) and Lauren MacColl
(Salt House, Rant) pay a humanising tribute to
these women while also exploring historical
beliefs in the supernatural and modern day
parallels in our society. Each piece of music is
based on specially commissioned works by
celebrated author Mairi Kidd - tales inspired by
and in remembrance of real women who were
persecuted and tried as witches, and characters
from the folkloric tales and mythology enshrined
in our oral culture.
THE STAMPING GROUND :: At Eden Court
Theatre, Bishops Road, Inverness. IV3 5SA. The
Stamping Ground is a new musical, featuring the
songs of Runrig, about love, life and the land.
It’s the hottest summer in years and the
villagers are sweltering. The heart of their
community, the local pub, is for sale and
tensions are rising about the future of this place
they call home. Newly returned together-forever
couple Euan and Annie find themselves lost in
this once familiar place, now filled with more
tourists than residents, as they navigate a new
life. Meanwhile, their disoriented teenage
daughter takes a shine to a local activist, much
to her overprotective dad’s disapproval, and
Euan’s mother's life is upturned when an old
flame returns home. As relationships ignite and
smoulder, the heartbeat of the land keeps
beating as the villagers try to band together
against the odds.
Scotland’s history. An estimated 2500 people
were executed, 80% of which were thought to
have been women. In this new project 'Heal &
Harrow', Rachel Newton (The Shee, The Furrow
Collective, Spell Songs) and Lauren MacColl (Salt
House, Rant) pay a humanising tribute to these
women while also exploring historical beliefs in
the supernatural and modern day parallels in our
society. Each piece of music is based on specially
commissioned works by celebrated author Mairi
Kidd - tales inspired by and in remembrance of
real women who were persecuted and tried as
witches, and characters from the folkloric tales
and mythology enshrined in our oral culture.
