Anglersshould try to match the hatch, wherethey fish . A typical selection ofartificial flies may include the diawlbach, buzzers, hoppers, sedgehog, olives and Bolton Sedge.Lures such as yellow dancer, rainbow dancer, cormorant, viva andmuddlers will all, given the correctconditions, tempt fish. Fishing afloating line with a long leader ofthree metres will be sufficient. The magical thing about fly fishingis that feeling of anticipation and therush of adrenaline as, on the largest orsmallest of lochs, we watch troutfeeding on surface flies. It is headystuff and that is why we do it.Looking back, the Mayfly hatch hasbeen on. This magnificent fly was onthe water and in the air in substantialnumbers. Trout were feeding activelyon both emerging and adult flies. Thewild birds were also having a feast.Fish can be so intent on feeding onthis specific fly that their guard may bedown. The Mayfly hatch normally lastsfor more than two weeks, perhapsextending to four to six weeks. The Mayfly emerged as the daywarmed up, around 11 am to noon. Ifthe weather conditions werefavourable, the hatch continued, invarying quantity, until evening. The selection of artificial fly andpresentation is important. The wrongsize, colour or badly-tied fly can proveless than successful. Representing theMayfly nymph, the insect beforeemerging into the adult fly is, atMayfly time, often the best bet. Thisemerging nymph moves fairly fastfrom the bottom of the reservoir tothe surface.Once at the surface it becomesvulnerable to predation. The emergingfly gets stuck in the surface film ofwater until it wriggles out of its existingPERMIT PRICES• Fishing permits for Harlaw andThreipmuir are priced at a full day for£25, with a bag limit of three fish.• Catch and release for the full day is £20and barbless or de-barbed hooks mustbe used.• An evening permit is priced at only £20and allows the angler to keep two fish• Permits for Harlaw and Threipmuircan only be purchased online atwww.mallenyangling.comaquatic body to emerge and take tothe wing as a beautiful adult Mayfly. The angler’s imitation should try torepresent this stage of the Mayfly’slife. Fishing the artificial fly in the topmeter of water presents the pattern inthe trout feeding zone. The trout willtake the adult fly, but will often go forRonnie Robinsonplaying a fish atHarlaw Reservoirthe easier option of the emerger.Fish take the fly with a bang, solight breaking nylon can be a mistake.A 2.7 Kg/6 lb breaking strain nylon isconsidered heavy enough. I havenever been a convert to moderncarbon leaders and fish MaximaUltragreen, which works for me. It issimply a personal choice.A Mayfly nymph tied on a size 10longshank or de-barbed hook andlightly dressed is a good choice, as is asimilar size of Pheasant’s Tail nymphwith a paler coloured thorax. TheSawyers Pheasant’s Tail Nymph isperhaps the simplest and deadliestnymph dressing ever developed andis a must for all fly fishers. An adaptation of a pale Hare’s Earfly tied on a longshank size 10 hook ismy choice of fly. This fly is tied with afew pheasant tail feather to representthe tail, a hare’s ear body with a silveror gold wire rib, a soft pale greenish/golden brown thorax of mixed sealsfur and greenish brown grizzle throathackle is close to the colour of thenatural fly. If the aim is to hold this flyin the surface film an extension ofCDC from the front of the thorax maybe added. Many bag limits are being achievedat Harlaw with fish up to 2 Kg, 4.5 lb inimperial weight being recorded.
