12 FEATURE SANDRA GEORGETheArchiPhyllis Stephen takes a look atwork of Sandra George whose histphotographs of Craigmare on display thandra George was a talented and prolific socialdocumentary photographer and a wellrespectedcommunity worker in Craigmillar.In November 2020, when Craigmillar Nowlaunched, the organisation accepted Sandra’svast collection of negatives from thephotographer’s estate. This importantcollection documents arts and communityprojects across Scotland between the 1980s –2000s and has been carefully catalogued,re-housed and digitised over the last year by ateam of more than 20 local volunteerarchivists supported through a heritagetraining programme at Craigmillar Now.There are 20 large scale black and whitephotographs in this new off-site exhibition,held at The White House – the impressiveArt Deco building on the corner of NiddrieMains Road. Many are taken at localorganisations that still operate in the area,

She was anincredible womansuch as The Niddrie Adventure Playground,‘The Venchie’ and The Niddrie Mission.Jimmy Hewitt, Sandra’s former partner said:“Sandra didn’t just capture moments in herphotographs; she captured lives. She was anincredible woman, and she never did anything byhalves. She would have been happy that we wereseeing her work, but not for herself - for thethousands of people she captured on filmthroughout the decades.”"What Sandra loved most about Craigmillarwas the people. Whenever we went through, theamount of people who would wave, or call, orstop and talk to us, and the children who wouldrun after her screaming "Sandra! Sandra!" - andshe had time for all of them. She was adored, andshe adored Craigmillar. It is incredibly moving tosee these images at the White House, and I amexcited for visitors to experience Sandra'sstunning view of the area."Tyler Hewitt, Sandra’s son and member of theCraigmillar Now Archives Team said:"Sandra would be overwhelmed by this in away. Thinking back on it she has to have been oneof the most humble of people - she did so muchand was committed to achieving whatever she setout to do. I'm thrilled that her work isbeing displayed."Sandra studied Photography at EdinburghNapier University, Drawing and Painting atEdinburgh College of Art and CommunityEducation at The University of Edinburgh. Sheworked extensively as a freelance photographerfor over 30 years for organisations andpublications such as The Sentinel, The TollcrossTimes, Shelter, and the Craigmillar Chronicle andFestival Times, and taught photography and otherarts skills to people of all ages in communitiesacross Edinburgh.She started working in communitydevelopment at Wester Hailes in the 1980s, andwas a founding member of several successfulsocial action projects, including in Craigmillar.As Youth Services Manager with Hunter’s HallCooperative from 2008, she administeredoutstanding programmes of youth artsengagement in Niddrie, and across her career shecaptured thousands of photographs documentingthe social history of Craigmillar, Edinburgh, andScotland at large.Craigmillar Now is based at the formerSt Andrew’s church on the corner of FortKinnaird Retail Park.The body’s volunteer archive team meet everyMonday between 10am – 5pm at the CraigmillarNow Arts Centre to develop the archives.Sandra was one ofthe most humbleof people – she didso much and wascommitted toachieving whatevershe set out to doAt the moviesWith LINSAY GIVEN BLACKOwner, Art & Craft Collective on CausewaysideIN THE FIRST of a new series we share abucket of popcorn and a jumbo soft drinkwith Linsay asking about her favourite film.After over 30 years in marketing and publicrelations, she opened Art & Craft Collective, agallery and gift shop on the Southside ofEdinburgh which celebrates its fifth birthdaythis year.Linsay said: “I’ve loved cinema almostall my life: I remember being allowed to stayup late and watch King Kong in black andwhite on the TV with my gran when I wasabout five. I was thrilled to be up late butterrified! I don’t count scary moviesamongst my favourites.”MY TOP FILM - THE SEARCHERS“I’ve chosen a film I can watch time and again:The Searchers, the 1956 Western starringJohn Wayne and Natalie Wood, directed byJohn Ford. I’m not a massive John Wayne orWestern fan but this is a classic. Beautifullyfilmed and a subtle story.“Natalie Wood plays the young daughter ofa homesteader captured by Comanches andtaken to live with the tribe. Wayne is the unclewho searches for her long after everyone elsehas given up. I won’t spoil the end but it isbitter sweet and unexpected. I love it for thedogged determination of John Wayne’scharacter who won’t be persuaded from whathe believes is right. He succeeds against theodds but is shown as a rather sad loner whoploughs his own furrow.““It is a good metaphor for the smallbusiness owner: don’t be distracted fromwhat you believe is the right path. Keeptrying despite setbacks. Accept thatsometimes it is a lonely road but hold true toyour vision to succeed.“I watched the ‘women’s pictures’ of the1930s and 1940s starring Bette Davis or JoanCrawford, often on TV on Saturdayafternoons when I was a teenager and therewere only three channels. I think I absorbed asense of style from these movies and animage of a strong woman and how sheshould behave - outdated now but served mewell in the formative years of my career.”
