from the
editor
It’s Getting
Hot in Here!!!
July is arguably one of the hottest months here in South
Florida so, while our seasonal visitors head back north
to escape our heat, us locals relish in less crowded
restaurants and venues. The summer is also when our
local merchants and businesses need us the most, so let’s
keep the Ave, the Grove, and A1A buzzing with energy!
There’s no better place to celebrate Independence Day than
in our All America City! For over 50 years The City of Delray has
hosted a family friendly event that welcomes over 70,000 people
to our beach. There is live music, food eating contests, food
trucks, vendors, children’s activities, and so much more! And
once it gets dark…FIREWORKS!!! Look inside for our feature An
All American July 4th for more details.
Our City Person this month is a Dynamic Duo. When Judy
Fenney and Kathleen Megan met, they knew they were going to
be friends and partners in doing good. They work tirelessly to
help the underserved in our community, and Delray Beach is a
better place because of them.
Let’s keep in mind that hurricane season is here, and we need
to gather supplies – preparation is key! Stock up on bathroom
and cleaning supplies, as well as medicines, water, candles,
flashlights, and batteries. And make sure to have an evacuation
plan for you and your pets.
Keep Cool Delray!
The
quieter
you
become,
the more
you are
able to
hear.
Back-to-School
Drive Launches
Early
The GL Homes and Boys & Girls
Clubs of Palm Beach County’s Back
To School Drive will ensure most disadvantaged
students are prepared for
the new school year.
The GL Homes and Boys & Girls
Clubs of Palm Beach County Back To
School Drive launched on June 1 to
help reduce a historic achievement
gap with low-income minority students
by providing a free backpack
stuffed with necessary school supplies.
A recent study published by
the National Bureau of Economic Research
(NBER) found minority students
from low-income households
suffered a 50% greater achievement
loss than other students compared to
pre-pandemic achievement results.
The study exposed a historic widening
of achievement gaps by race and economic
status.
GL Homes is the title sponsor of
Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach
County’s Back To School Drive. Their
support is crucial to helping more
than 2500 children and teens across
the county who live at or below the
poverty line receive a backpack full of
needed school supplies. With the results
of the NBER study uncovering a
historic achievement gap, it’s imperative
that all Club members return to
the classroom with the essential tools
needed to be successful.
The GL Homes and Boys & Girls
Clubs of Palm Beach County Back To
School Drive began June 1 and will run
through August 1. Drop-off locations
for backpacks and school supplies
are scattered throughout Palm Beach
County, including most libraries and
Starbucks. Drop off locations open to
the public can be found at this link
https://bit.ly/3x9RULS. Donations
can also be made virtually by purchasing
backpacks stuffed with needed
school supplies for only $10. To donate
Now Broker-Owner of Realty
Home Advisors, with two offices
and roughly 200 agents under
her leadership in Boca Raton and
Delray Beach, it turns out Eileen’s hunch was
right.
NY: The Early Years
Eileen grew up in Long Island and graduated
from the New York Institute of Technology
with a degree in business administration.
Fresh out of college she worked for an entertainment
company in Manhattan but quickly
grew frustrated by the limited opportunities
for advancement.
Craving a career with greater flexibility and
limitless potential, Eileen also knew she
wanted to raise a family and help others
succeed. Real estate provided the opportunity
to have it all.
Eileen recalls, “I signed up for a real estate
salesperson’s course that same week that I
bought my fourth house and joined Prudential
Long Island Realty (now Douglas Elliman)
after passing the test,” Eileen continues,
“I loved that I could be an entrepreneur and
be in charge of my own destiny. My first year
in the business, 1986, I was “Rookie of the
Year” with 38 closed transactions. Subsequently,
I was also Top Producer of the year.”
The Florida Move
“In 2002, my husband and I moved to Boca
Raton with three young children in tow,” Eileen
continues. “I always stayed active in sales
but my most cherished prize are my three
children, all grown up now.”
Eileen opened Realty Home Advisors in
Boca Raton in 2017 and credits her daily
presence in the office as one of the primary
reasons agents love working at RHA.
“As an owner, I wake up every day feeling
gratitude that I can be there to help my
agents and be their biggest cheerleader. I am
very hands on for a broker and I think the
agents appreciate that personal touch, the
one-onone. I am always there for them 24/7.”
Eileen notes Realty Home Advisors also
offers a growing number of learning opportunities
for agents, veterans and rookies alike,
that really help retention and growth. “We
do business planning, coaching, role playing,
consulting, contract guidance and disputes,”
Eileen explains. “Every Wednesday we have
a team call at 9:30 am where I will pick a
different topic to discuss followed by a Q&A
session afterwards.” Last year, Realty Home
Advisors sales volume was $512 million, and
according to Eileen, 2022 seems to be on a
similar pace with families flocking to the east
coast of Florida from the Northeast. Not one
for the spotlight, Eileen is quick to give credit
to her hard-working team for RHA’s success.
Eileen
MCNAMARA VECCHIO
REALTY HOME ADVISORS
Leading with A Personal Touch
“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”
“I was always fascinated by the real estate market and bought my first house
when I was 25… I actually owned four houses myself by the time I was 28.”
Eileen McNamara Vecchio recalls. “I rented the houses out… and while looking
for investment property, I remember thinking I could be good at this.”
“I couldn’t do this without my amazing
staff… All the right people are in place
and agents often remark how everything is
running like a welloiled machine. We have six
Personal Business Coordinators that manage
the REALTORS® transactions and every
agent is paid within 24 hours of closing.”
When pressed for details as to why she thinks
her agents stick around, Eileen points out
there’s absolutely no red tape at her brokerage.
Eileen says, “I try to listen to my agents
when they express a need and adjust accordingly.
I know my agents also enjoy the fact
that we are an independent brokerage; we can
be flexible when needed without having to go
through layers of management… I can make
the decision right there on the spot.”
When Eileen isn’t at her desk, she enjoys
traveling, being in nature and spending time
with her family and three kittens, two of
whom she rescued. Eileen plans to eventually
scale back her time in the office to focus on
her family, but she never plans to stop doing
what she loves – helping others succeed.
With a father who is also a real estate broker,
a son who is a practicing real estate attorney,
and a daughter who is a commercial property
manager, Eileen would not be surprised if one
of her children eventually took over RHA.
“When they were growing up, my kids heard
me on the phone talking about real estate all
day long because I was doing sales back then,”
Eileen laughs. “So we shall see… but that would
be wonderful if it all works out some day.”
Eileen looks forward to cheerleading from
her broker desk and offers some sage advice
to owners and agents alike: “It’s always
important to have a business plan and to set
goals, have a great attitude and live every day
with a schedule to achieve those goals.”
“Unfortunately, the impact of Covid is still being felt by teachers,
students and parents as there are less resources but the needs
haven’t changed. If anything, the needs have increased,” said Partner
Anuj Grover.
School supply drives have a significant impact as teachers
spend an average of $750 to $1,000 out of their own pocket on
supplies for their classroom. Grover Corlew is collecting backpacks,
folders, notebooks, pencils, art supplies and more that
will distributed through the Education Foundation of Palm Beach
County and Broward Education Foundation. The company has
been supporting schools in Palm Beach and Broward counties for
more than five years.
According to 90% of teachers surveyed by the national non-profit
Kids in Need Foundation, three in four students arrive to class
without the requisite school supplies necessary for learning.
“Educating future generations is important to Mark and me,”
Grover said. “We see the value in the public school system as both
of us attended public schools. It’s particularly important to support
Title I schools.”
Palm Beach Symphony reached 7,943 K-12 students during the
2021-2022 school year via innovative programs presented at no
charge to the schools or students. Players of the Palm Beach Symphony
mentored young musicians enrolled in orchestra and band
classes, and they also performed for student audiences school-wide
in Pre-K through 12th grade across Palm Beach County.
Musicians provided 611 hours of instruction in a variety of formats
to students in the county’s music programs. Music residences
were offered at four Title I schools resulting in a total of 40 class
sessions per month for those students. Music students also learned
technique, tone, posture, and instrument position in 216 coaching
sessions that included rehearsing alongside the Symphony musicians.
The coaching sessions are part of the residencies at the four
Title I schools. In addition, the Symphony presented 20 in-school
concerts to elementary through high schools who received mentorship,
guidance, and inspiration to further their musical interests
and abilities.
Student musicians also shared the limelight as 291 participated in
as well as monetary donations to purchase and cover costs for needed
LuxWorld ®
BY Alex Khesin
My name is Alex Khesin and I am an interior designer,
specializing in high-end residential projects. My work
brings me tremendous satisfaction considering I get to
reimagine anything from homes, apartments, home offices, home
theaters, gaming rooms, patios, and terraces. Over my 20 years of
experience, I have completed hundreds of projects both domestically
and internationally. In New York City alone, I worked in the Trump
Tower, the Trump Tower Hotel, Millennium Tower, Lincoln Center,
Metropolitan Tower, and the Albert, to name a few. I founded
LuxWorld ® in 2013, after over a decade of building relationships with
luxury manufacturers in Europe. What sets LuxWorld ® apart from
many other interior design companies is the representation/sourcing
brands portfolio that I have built over this period of time. It consists
of over 100 high-end European brands! Such direct relationships
afford me the opportunity to source the most effective materials
and furnishings to accommodate any project. Another benefit is the
significant cost savings this offers my clients, allowing them to meet
their project goals within their budgetary requirements.
the seagate
BY Gina Netisingha, DIRECTOR of BEVERAGE
I’ve been in the Hospitality industry for nearly 20 years! I’ve spent
most of it on the East Coast at properties such as The Surf Club
Hotel, Le Sirenuse & Champagne Bar in Miami, and most recently
Four Seasons Hotel, Baltimore. Prior to that, I was a member of Tom
Colicchio’s management team at Craft Restaurant in NYC, and Chef
Alain Ducasse’s pre-opening team at Adour Restaurant in Washington,
D.C. I’ve come to find The Seagate has been a part of the rich, layered
history of Delray Beach for decades. The relaxed, genuine hospitality of
the Properties truly embodies the spirit of this special city and provides
you with a sense of place – whether you are looking for a romantic
seaside getaway, a golf weekend with the boys, or a buzzy Sunday
Brunch with friends. It’s truly been an exciting journey since I joined
in Summer 2021! I must confess that I am somewhat of a Beverage
nerd (Bubbles & Tequila being some of my fav categories!).Our new
Beverage & Culinary offerings are fresh and playful — sure to have
you and yours returning for generations to come. Take it from me! The
Seagate truly is the “Place to Be”. Come visit me or find out more about
Posh PROPERTIES
BY Philip DeCarlo, Broker Associate
My name is Philip DeCarlo, and I am a Broker Associate with Posh
Properties. I hold a Master of Science Degree from NYU and am
licensed as a Real Estate Broker in New York, New Jersey, and
Florida. I chose Posh Properties to “hang my hat” after relocating to FL
from NYC 2 years ago. Posh stood out to me because of their local ties
within the Delray Beach community. I knew being a Posh agent would be
a huge asset to my real estate career here in Florida. I purchased my first
investment property at 23 years old, and since then real estate has been
a huge passion of mine! The most meaningful part of my career has
been helping clients fulfill their dream of home ownership. Most of my
clients have relocated from out of state. Assisting families in their journey
across state lines and helping them explore all south Florida has to
offer has been such an honor. Living in Florida has been a dream come
true for myself and my family, and being able to bring that same joy to my
clients is a continual goal of mine. My sweetheart Lisa and I have been
married for 34 years, and we have two children and two grandchildren.
When I’m not working with my clients you can find me with my wife and
grandkids at the beach, soaking in the south Florida sun!
Siperstein Dermatology Group
BY Dr. Elizabeth Lebrun NESTOR
My name is Dr. Elizabeth Lebrun Nestor, and I am a local
dermatologist at Siperstein Dermatology Group. My family
moved to Florida when I was 5 years old, so I am basically
a South Florida native! I graduated from Saint Andrew’s School and
attended Cornell University. After life in the cold winters, I moved back
to be closer to family and sunny weather. I attended both medical
school and dermatology residency at University of Miami, Jackson
Memorial Hospital. After graduating, I was lucky enough to find the
perfect practice and partner, and as soon as I met Dr. Robyn Siperstein,
I knew I had found a great mentor who shared similar values. I joined
Siperstein Dermatology Group 7 years ago for the focus on customer
service and exceptional patient care. We now have two state-of-the-art
offices in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach. We offer comprehensive
services, including medical, cosmetic and surgical dermatology. We
strive to create a personal experience for each and every patient while
tailoring a custom plan of action to meet the patients’ medical and
aesthetic goals. Please call the office at 561-955-8885. We would love
to take care of all of your skin’s needs!
locals only | delray under $50
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.
Hot weather, red-white-and-blue everything, and grilling galore.
This can only mean one thing: July 4th! Independence
Day falls on Monday, so you have all weekend to prepare
your party plans. If you prefer to head out instead of staying in,
The City of Delray Beach cordially invites you and all of your neighbors
to head downtown for the Delray Beach 4th of July Celebration,
which has been a family-friendly event for more than 50 years
that draws around 80,000 people to town. The event starts at 5pm
with the solemn 60’ flag raising ceremony, with an honor guard
and the singing of the National Anthem. The spectacular Zambelli
Fireworks start promptly at 9pm, but there’s plenty to enjoy in between,
from custard-eating and cheeseburger-eating contests, food
trucks and vendors, children’s activities and games, non-stop entertainment
with DJ Big Smile and Groove 2.0 Band, and so much
more! It’s truly an amazing event and one that is best enjoyed with
a little bit of sun, fun, and your favorite someone. The celebration
takes place on East Atlantic Avenue from the Intracoastal Bridge to
A1A, and street closures begin at 1pm so
plan accordingly. Visit www.mydelraybeach.com
or call (561) 243-7250 for
more information.
July marks the start of the second half of the year, so if you’re
slacking on your “self-love” New Year’s resolution, this is a great
reminder to get back in gear and show your No. 1 who’s No. 1.
July is Self-Care Month and as good a time as any to show yourself
some TLC. If you need a fresh area of respite in the hustle and bustle
of life, check out newly opened Moon & Flower. The coffee, tea,
and apothecary shop offers a variety of organic healthy teas, herbs,
crystals, artisan goods, and fine art with a goal to nourish the mind,
body and soul. You’re invited to enjoy a drink and relax; shop the
store for the perfect handcrafted gift, crystal, or artwork; or join in
on a workshop, class or private reading. The Moon & Flower team
aims to help to grow a community based around health, love, creativity,
and compassion, and provide various local artisans, small
family-owned businesses, and native people with the opportunity
to prosper. Regardless of your goal, or what your life is currently
thirsty for, you’re sure to enjoy your visit, learn something about
yourself, and smell the roses in a new and calming manner. Moon &
Flower is located at 1201 N. Federal Highway.
It’s a beautiful day, you’re hungry, and
you’re not sure where to go. Sure, you
could snag an outdoor table at one of
the Avenue’s many restaurants, but why
don’t you take it a step further and actually
head outside. July is National Picnic
Month and a fantastic reminder that we
are only steps away from tons of great
parks and sanctuaries, located right in
our backyard. If you prefer a little help
filling your picnic basket, head first to
Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market and enjoy
this one-stop-shop for everything you
need to make your picnic a success.

Not only do they have chilled beer and wine, as well as a great
selection of red wine, but they also have prepared foods (salads,
sandwiches, wraps, sides, etc.), snacks, fresh fruit, and
decadent grab-and-go desserts. Once you have your loot, set
your sights on Veterans Park (Intracoastal and Atlantic Avenue),
where you can dine under large shade trees and watch
the boats pass by, or Lake Ida East Park (950 N.W. Ninth St.),
where there’s covered picnic tables and plenty of boating and
fishing action to watch on the lake. Picnicking will be so easy
and enjoyable you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it more often
in the first place! Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market is located at
381 N.E. Third Avenue. Visit www.bedners.com or call (561)
501-5177 for more information.
It’s hot, people. There’s no getting around it. Even with
the best shade or healthiest of breezes, we all could use
a little help in the cooling-off department. July marks the
Dog Days of Summer and it’s no secret when these dogs start
barking - and panting. Thankfully, we have a secret weapon
in town, which is Delray Yacht Cruises, because there’s practically
nothing that an Intracoastal cruise and a piña colada
can’t fix. The team invites you to experience the calm waters
of the Intracoastal Waterway aboard the Lady Atlantic and
Lady Delray while enjoying your favorite beverage or snack
on a two-hour narrated tour past some of the area’s most
beautiful mansions. You’ll be able to see a variety of marine
life in its natural habitat and learn a little about the area’s
history as you cruise from Delray Beach south to Boca Raton.
The cruises are held Wednesday through Sunday at 1:30pm
and select Fridays and Saturdays at 5:30pm and leave from
Veterans Park (Intracoastal and Atlantic Avenue). Tickets are
$30 for adults and $27 for seniors/children, and there’s also a
full bar and casual dining menu available on board. So all you
need to do is show up, kick back, relax and enjoy the breeze!
Visit www.delraybeachcruises.com or call (561) 243-0686 for
more information and to purchase tickets.
There’s just something about a simple, yet well-made,
sandwich that sets everything right in the world. Bagel
sandwich for breakfast, sub for lunch, or a hot and
pressed sandwich for dinner. Yes, yes, and more yes. July is
National Deli Sandwich Month but instead of heading to a big
box sandwich shop, show your local sandwich artists - and
your stomach - some local love. You’d be remiss if you didn’t
start your journey at Sandwiches by the Sea. No muss, no fuss,
just seriously fresh, good, fast, friendly, and dangerously delicious
subs and sandwiches. Grab a hoagie and head to the
beach or eat it immediately in their intimate backyard patio.
(Note: don’t plan on sharing or having any leftovers). For
something a little beefier, Sazio Express is proud to serve you
their made-to-order heroes, including meatball parm, chicken
cutlet, roast beef and gorgonzola, and sausage and peppers.
Or, for a laundry list of classic sandwiches, head to the oneand-only
Green Owl, where they’re serving up more options
than you know what to do with. Think liverwurst, patty melt,
BLT, egg salad, tuna salad, and way, way more, all served with
plenty of friendly people-watching action. No matter how
you slice it, there’s a sandwich calling your name. Visit www.
Bookends: A Memoir of Love,
Loss, and Literature
by Zibby oWENS
Released July 1st
deeply personal memoir about one woman’s journey to finding
A her voice and rewriting her story by the creator and host of
the award-winning podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books.
Zibby Owens has become a well-known personality in the
publishing world. Her infectious energy, tasteful authenticity,
and smart, steadfast support of authors started in childhood, a
precedent set by the profound effect books and libraries had on
her own family.
But after losing her closest friend on 9/11 and later becoming
utterly stressed out and overwhelmed by motherhood, Zibby
was forgetting what made her her. She turned to books and writing
for help.
Just when things seemed particularly bleak, Zibby unexpectedly
fell in love with a tennis pro turned movie producer who
showed her the path to happiness: away from type-A perfectionism
and toward letting things unfold organically. What unfolded
was a meaningful career, a great love, and finally, her voice, now
heard by millions of listeners.
An honest and moving story about relationships, love, food issues,
the writing life, and finding one’s true calling, Bookends will
Acts of Violet
by Margarita Montimore
Released July 5th
From the author of GMA Book Club pick and national bestseller
Oona Out of Order, Acts of Violet is a dazzling and twisty new
novel about a famous magician who disappears, leaving her sister
to figure out what really happened.
Nearly a decade ago, iconic magician Violet Volk performed her
greatest trick yet: vanishing mid-act. Though she hasn’t been seen
since, her hold on the public hasn’t wavered. While Violet sought
out the spotlight, her sister Sasha, ever the responsible one, took
over their mother’s salon and built a quiet life for her daughter,
Quinn. But Sasha can never seem to escape her sister’s orbit or
her memories of their unresolved, tumultuous relationship. Then
there’s Cameron Frank, tapped to host a podcast devoted to all
things Violet, who is determined to finally get his big break―even
if he promised to land an exclusive interview with Sasha, the one
person who definitely doesn’t want to talk to him.
As the ten-year anniversary approaches, the podcast picks up
steam, and Cameron’s pursuit of Sasha becomes increasingly intrusive.
He isn’t the only one wondering what secrets she might be
keeping: Quinn, loyal to the aunt she always idolized, is doing her
46 | july 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
own investigating. Meanwhile, Sasha begins to experience an unsettling
series of sleepwalking episodes and coincidences, which
all seem to lead back to Violet. Pushed to her emotional limits, Sasha
must finally confront the most painful truths about her sister,
and herself, even at the risk of losing everything.
The Bodyguard
by KATherine Center
Released July 19th
New York Times bestselling author Katherine Center’s The
Bodyguard is unabashedly romantic, laugh-out-loud funny, and
the perfect summer read.
Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than
somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint
pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive
Protection Agent (aka “bodyguard”), and she just got hired to protect
superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgibreeding
stalker.
Jack Stapleton’s a household name―captured by paparazzi on
beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out
of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like
a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy,
he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid.
When Jack’s mom gets sick, he comes home to the family’s Texas
ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to
know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah―
against her will and her better judgment―finds herself pretending
to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, like a jerk, says
no one will believe it.
Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she
spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies
the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But
Youth Sports and Concussions:
The Argument for
Pre-Season Brain Screening
A concussion is known as mild traumatic brain
injury. It is most commonly defined as a head
injury that momentarily affects brain functions.
Concussions occur when an impact to the head or body causes
your head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This movement
causes the brain to bounce around inside the skull creating
chemical changes in your brain. If the impact is severe enough,
neurons within the brain can be stretched and damaged producing
a traumatic brain injury. The youth sports producing the most concussions
are tackle football, boy’s ice hockey, girl’s soccer, and boy’s
lacrosse. Here are some remarkably interesting numbers concerning
concussions and youth sports: 33% of all concussions happen
at practice, 47% of all sports related concussions occur during high
school football, 1 in 5 high school athletes will sustain a concussion
during the season, 33% of high school athletes that sustain a concussion
report 2 or more in the same year, 39% of athletes that have numerous
concussions are shown to increase catastrophic head injury
leading to more permanent impairment. To add to these daunting
numbers is the fact that most athletes with concussions rarely lose
consciousness therefore they may not be reported.
Many youth and recreational organizations and high schools are
implementing programs to assess for the baseline brain activity of
their athletes prior to the start of the season. In essence, a snapshot
of the athlete’s brain function is taken prior to the athletic competition
to be able to compare neurological function after a concussion
and determine the amount of injury sustained. These tests
also provide a baseline marker for objective “return to play” benchmarks.
This takes away the subjective reporting of a child which
in many cases cannot even accurately describe what they are feeling.
Because concussions are much more difficult to quantify than
a ligament tear or fracture, traditional imaging such as MRI and CT
are not fruitful. However, there are now several evidence-based
technologies available to assess and treat these concussions.
Headache, dizziness, disorientation, confusion, sleep disturbance,
nausea, and irritability are all symptoms associated with
concussions, however the challenge is in the quantification process.
The management of the concussion must be organized into
a pre-season assessment, incident report and comparable, treatment,
follow-up assessment, and return to play. The piece we are
going to look at here is the pre-season assessment. This is going to
be composed of the neurological aspects that are most commonly
seen injured in athletes with concussions. These are postural stability,
working memory, reaction/processing times, set switching,
48 | july 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
learning, and dynamic and static visual acuity. Norms have been
established for age groups and gender which makes comparing
relatively easy. Once the data is collected and areas of deficiency
identified, treatment is implemented and can be very precise. The
athlete is then re-examined after the course of treatment and then
allowed to “return to play” if the benchmarks have been reached.
The equipment that is gaining the most notoriety for the assessment
and treatment is the Hit Check Cognitive Assessment Aid, Dynavision
D2, Force Plate Posturography, and Medical Virtual Reality
Assessment and Rehabilitation tool. The next time your child plays
a sport, prior to the season get a baseline assessment to ensure his
or her brain health.
Mind Makeover
If you are serious about transforming your
body and getting in the best possible shape,
there’s a couple of things you will need to
do before you start your transformation.
You might think I’m going to say…plan your workouts, clean
out your pantry etc…but, not so fast! Before you can start
to transform your body you have to transform your mind.
Transforming your body is pretty much ALL mental. If your mind
is not in the right place, your body will not follow suit. I’ve seen
it time and time again in the fitness industry. Your mindset is
the ONLY thing that separates you from having the body of your
dreams. It’s the difference of reaching goals or missing them. With
that being said, here are some things to consider before beginning
your “physical” transformation.
Start by identifying your current mindset. You
may feel frustrated or discouraged about your
current situation. You may feel you have tried
everything to change your body with no
success. You may feel defeated that you
gain and lose the same 10 pounds over
and over. Whatever your situation may
be, you need to realize what feelings
you’re having and why you’re having
them. Once you identify your current
mindset, you’ll be able to move forward
with the right type of thinking.
Which brings me to my next
point, the power of positivity.
A positive mindset is a MUST.
We attract what we think about.
We become what we think
about. Positive thoughts yield
positive results. If you start your
transformation with doubts about your abilities or
doubts about hitting your goals you are already setting
up for failure. Know there will be obstacles
along the way, but you need to have the right
mindset so obstacles will not hinder your final
result. Whatever life throws you (life is full of
curveballs) you’ll be ready to handle any situation
or bump in the road. Too many people
give up on their goals because of circumstances
totally within their control. So be ready, willing
and able to say and do, “Whatever comes my way,
I’ve got this and I WILL do this!”
The next key to a successful transformation is
50 | July 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
that you have to want it bad enough. If not, then EVERY excuse in
the book will stand in your way. “Oh, I didn’t have time to get to the
gym. It was just a couple extra slices of pizza.” Every person that
wants it bad enough, gets results. The clients that think they want
to transform but don’t have a yearning in their heart for change,
don’t. It’s really as simple as that. New clients will ask, “Do you
think I have what it takes to transform?” And the answer is always,
“Yes, anyone can transform as long as you want it bad enough!”
When you want something bad enough, your heart and head are
into it and with that your body will follow.
The last piece of advice is to leave fear of failure at the
door. There is nothing to be afraid of - the only way to
fail is by not even trying. Fear is often what holds us
back from going after the things we really want in
life. What should really scare you is the thought
of staying stagnant in your current situation.
Imagine living in a body you’re uncomfortable
with for the rest of your life…now
that’s scary! The only way you can fail
is by giving up. Understand that
transforming your body is a marathon
not a sprint. Every “body”
is different and each person’s
transformation will take a different
amount of time. For some
it will be three months, for some it will be one year.
Whatever it is for YOU, don’t ever give up. Failure
will never be an option.
Before embarking on your physical transformation,
make sure your mind is warmed up and
ready to run with you. Our mind is the most
powerful tool we have and it can either make
us or break us. Use it wisely and your transformation
will be a little easier than you think!
Giovanni
Rodriguez
Chances are you’ve
recently seen Giovanni
Rodriguez acting
alongside some of
Hollywood’s elite.
Elevating his catalog
of credits from extra
work and a behind-thescenes
camera man,
he is now making a
name for himself on
the small and silver
screen alike.
I
always knew there was
a notable destiny waiting
for me. When you’re
young, there’s no way of realizing
what’s in store for you...
but I could feel there was something
special ahead.”
At the tender age of four,
Giovanni relocated to the States
from Bogotá, Colombia with his
grandmother and three older
sisters. Settling into South
Florida with his mother, who
had moved a few years prior in
search of a better life, the early
days were far from easy.
“I lived in the projects and
was fairly poor, depending on
government assistance. Those
experiences are always present
in the back of my mind instilling
motivation, because to succeed
and get out of that situation,
you have to work harder down
a much longer road.”
Entering high school, Gio
didn’t have one specific career
goal in mind, until he took a TV
Production course his sophomore
year.
“The class started out teaching
us the secrets of reporting
which sparked my interest. We
then broke down stunts from
the Beverly Hills Cop movies, and
learned how it took at least two
weeks to complete one car chase.
I became fascinated by how the
entire operation worked. My
high school also offered a camera
education course which I enrolled
in, and from that point on
there was no turning back.”
Retaining an adoration for baseball since his youth, Rodriguez
had decided to transition his new found interest in television production
to focus solely on sports broadcasting, however an acting
class in college reshaped his plan.
“My attention was no longer engrossed in broadcasting after I
discovered what it was like to be in front of the camera. My destiny
questions from childhood were being answered, and I could finally
see where I was supposed to go.”
Before his on-screen career gained momentum,
Rodriguez secured a job as a camera utility
for the Miami Heat, and has had a relationship
with the franchise ever since.
“With my work title, it means I am directly involved
with the Miami Heat as part of their regular
staff. When we won the final games in 2012
and 2013 I was part of the crew, and received
NBA Championship rings as well.”
When Giovanni resolved to fully go after a
career in acting, he quickly landed a baseball
commercial, bringing his love of America’s pastime
full circle. This led to acquiring an agent,
and soon after, his first television appearance on
NBC’s Seaquest DSV. Gio began working consistently,
landing bit parts and extra work in The
Hunger Games, Miracles From Heaven, USA Network’s
Burn Notice, and The Florida Project. It
was in fact while employed behind the scenes on
Burn Notice that Rodriguez made his stunt man
debut, accepting an offer to learn combat training
on set, supervised by an expert coordinator.
Recently, Giovanni’s achievements have boosted his status to the
next level. Depending on your preferences, last year you either saw
Rodriguez in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Suicide Squad,
Mayans M.C., or all three. Not many actors obtain the opportunity to
have appeared in rival DC Extended Universe and Marvel Cinematic
Universe movies simultaneously, but his talent allowed him to do so
with ease. Portraying a tough guy across the board, Giovanni benefits
from his appearance, embracing all qualities and dispositions.
“I don’t mind being typecast. Mayans M.C. was one show that I
really admired and pursued, stemming from a long-standing love of
Sons of Anarchy. I was super determined to be on that show... I don’t
know if that particular casting was going to happen, but apparently
my headshot was seen and on the radar of the casting director for
My destiny
questions from
childhood
were being
answered, and
I could finally
see where I was
supposed to go.
the spinoff series, Mayans. When the opportunity came around for
the role of Jinx, I knew this was my shot and went after it.”
When he’s not trying to kill Harley Quinn or fight off the bad
guys, Gio continues to utilize his camera skills around the globe,
barely ever pausing.
“I probably travel eighty percent of the year. Life does get a little
cumbersome at times, but I have such passion for the work and get
to be involved with once in a lifetime events. Projects have led me
internationally to places such as Dubai, Germany,
Paris, and not too long ago a job for the WWE
took me to Saudi Arabia. My downtime is most
often on the road, and I usually try to explore the
city I’m in.”
In October of 2021, Giovanni added celebrity
guest to his resumé, premiering his own booth
at Spooky Empire, a bi-annual horror convention
held in Orlando. Although he was featured for his
portrayal in The Suicide Squad, fans of every role
showed up for meet-and-greet photo opportunities
and autographs.
The consummate professional, Giovanni thoroughly
immerses himself into each character.
“I like to be as prepared as possible arriving to
set, so I can offer my best performance. Upon receiving
a script from my agent, I begin reading it
over trying to find the emotion behind the words,
in order to make them my own and act true to the
part. Right before my scene, I will try to meditate
and relax while still watching and observing how
the other actors adjust and react to the process.”
COPYRIGHTED
Giovanni is currently filming the NBA finals in Boston, and echoes
his grandmother’s mantra when relaying a few words of wisdom
for someone starting out in this business.
“She told me to remain patient and have faith that your time
will come. You have to truly love what you do, or somewhere
along the line you’re just going to give up. The passion felt in the
beginning has to persist enough to persevere through the obstacles
that will come, because the rejection can sometimes get
overwhelming in this industry. But if you really have a true energy
for this line of work, you will find your way, your niche... and
in the end - find yourself.”
LEGACY BARBER SHOP & STUDIO
The owners of Legacy Barber Shop & Studio are easy going,
friendly, and aim to please. There is no trace of self-importance
or arrogance - instead the vibe at Legacy is one of harmony
and friendship, kinship and kindness.
And that’s the way they planned it.
“I treat all my clients as friends. We talk about everything – there
is a lot more here than just a transaction,” adds Mark.
You bet there is. The twinkle in Mark’s eyes don’t just shine for
his family (though they get top billing in his personal hierarchy)
they extend outward.
So much so that Legacy Barbershop has a legion of clients that
will only go to them and relish the experience.
Former Wall Street finance executive Scott Altshuler is an example.
He’s been coming to Esais every Friday for the past seven years
and doesn’t foresee any change in the future.
“I won’t go anywhere else for a haircut. They are very accommodating
and take their time with you. The cuts are precise, detailed
and they take pride in their work. People have stopped me
in elevators and asked, ‘Where do you get your hair cut?’ Esais
uses a straight razor for my beard and sideburns and the lines
are very clean.”
Being successful is one thing, but enjoying your craft is another.
Both Esais and Mark have been barbering since their youth and are
dyed in the wool converts to this artistic reverie.
“Being a barber is like being an artist. Every client is a canvas. A
barbershop is a subculture; the level of intensity changes with every
subject we discuss. And nothing is off limits. The subjects vary:
the movies, sports, and our personal lives,” said Mark, who helped
out at his step-father’s barbershop at the age of 13.
Esais is equally as steeped in the artistry and camaraderie of being
a barber. The father of six is known for creating artistic hair
designs for clients who want individualized scenic headspace.
Like Mark, Esais was born to cut hair. His mother owned a salon
in Pompano and he helped out there as a teen. She taught him
about cutting hair and inspired him to follow the path of barbering.
“I went to art school, but had a family and chose a career as a
barber instead.”
Good Vibes and
Great Haircuts
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Whoever said that “nice guys
finish last” has never met
Mark Tassy and Esais Rosado.
That decision was a prudent one. Esais’s artistic outlet can be
seen on clients, and in his ability to create miracles in real time. “I
am passionate about what I do. This is not just about cutting hair,
but about relationships, we are modern day therapists.”
Altshuler, who has a busy life, sees Legacy as a place to relax and
unwind each week. “Esais and I talk; he knows everything about my
life. It’s great to see their success. Legacy opened in a small space
with two barbers and now has five barbers and a larger shop.”
COPYRIGHTED

Altshuler has a point. The expansion of Legacy is part and parcel
of their fine customer service, barbering expertise and a can-do attitude
with a smile.
Jay Gallo understands their creed of companionship and connection,
and enjoys the vibe. He comes every two weeks to Mark for a
combover, hard part and skin fade. “I don’t chose hair styles anymore.
A while ago Mark told me it was time to change my look; he
did such a great job - I let him decide.”
Jeff feels the same way. “I love Mark. He’s caring, friendly, consistent,
and gives me great haircuts. He does a fade into my beard and
it looks more polished.”
If you ask Mark about the skin fade and hard part he will tell you
it’s about detail and precision. The creative license to design someone’s
top asset is looked upon as an artform by everyone at Legacy.
The sole female among all the testosterone at Legacy is Abigal.
The licensed cosmetologist has a steady hand in transforming her
clients. One young man came in with an unruly beard and walked
out with a low fade, hard part, and goatee. His appearance was
transformative, which is Abigal’s signature of excellence.
There’s also Brandon Clark, who’s not only a barber at Legacy,
but also an accomplished artist. His art hangs on the wall with other
pop artists such as Bansky, and Mr. Brainwash.
This hipster-inspired barbershop has artistic brush stroke epoxy
floors and a fountain of good vibes and talent. They welcome everyone;
children, women, and men of all ages. They offer gentleman’s cuts,
skin fades, mohawks, mullets, hot shaves, or any style cut you want.
Both Mark and Esais are family oriented and respect their clients
with equal affection. Welcome to Legacy Barbershop – a place
where there are no strangers, only friends!
Dr. Joe Martin
Concierge VIP Personal
Training and Physical Therapy
By diane feen | photos courtesy of dr, joe martin
Dr. Joe Martin didn’t need a business
executive to tell him the secret to
success. He already knew it.
love and compassion are at the deepest level of
your business model, then business success always
“When
follows.”
Dr. Joe was right. He didn’t need a PhD in business to figure this
out. It was second nature to him.
That’s because life didn’t hand him a bed of roses, it was more a
mixed bag of challenges, difficulties, and breakthroughs.
But it was enduring the challenges of life that gave him
the strength to succeed and accomplish what most
people only dream about.
His journey has been long and wavy, but the
road led to the same end point – that of fulfilment
with an underpinning of love.
He joined the army and became a combat
veteran in the 1st Cavalry Division.
He drove an M1A1 battle tank and served
tours of duty in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. He
also excelled in physical fitness and earned a
top tier physical fitness award.
From there he got a Doctorate in
Physical Therapy and realized that
his talent was helping others overcome
obstacles.
Dr. Joe was awarded the
title of “Physical Therapist
of the Year” in the state of
Michigan. He then moved
to New York and opened a
physical therapy practice.
One practice led to five,
and within a few years he
had five practices and 35
employees in central New
York.
Dr. Joe’s next move was to
Florida. After spending time
with his family, he realized he was in the epicentre of an aging population
that needed help. He also realized that many people were
not getting the help they needed.
“Some physical therapists don’t evaluate the patient; they just
hand them a piece of paper with exercises to do. Or they see two
or three patients at a time. You can’t give good value if you’re
treating two or three people at once. People deserve one-on-one
personal care.”
That is exactly what Dr. Joe does now in Florida. He calls himself
a white glove concierge personal trainer and physical therapist
and travels to meet you exactly where you are at – physically
and mentally.
His van says it all. He is in the business of helping people
with back aches, hip misalignment, strength training,
mobility issues, and overall fitness training.
Dr. Joe no longer has an office, he travels to meet clients
at their homes, offices or wherever the pavement
meets opportunity. But one thing is for certain – Dr. Joe
will assess your situation and come up with a
plan to help your aches, pains, mobility,
and level of fitness. It’s not one size
fits all – like most trainers – he is
in it to win it.
Others agree.
“Dr. Joe is a cross between
Tony Robbins and Rocky
Balboa. I needed someone
to help me focus mentally
and achieve weight
loss. With my hectic
life it was hard to
focus, and post CO-
VID living has been
mentally challenging.
Dr. Joe helped
me improve my men-
tal state and added a personal training program. It’s been very effective.
He is one of the best there is,” said Franco, a TV producer.
There are others who feel the same way. Todd VanDyke went to
him with a low back injury twice (one was a car accident) and was
able to avoid surgery. The rest is history – Dr. Joe history.
“Dr. Joe’s care and expertise are the reason I was able to avoid
surgery. He took time and really listened to issues I was having. He
applied his knowledge to form a treatment plan that was exactly
what I needed. I am so thankful to him.”
One of Dr. Joe’s secret sauces is his desire to help others. His understanding
is clinical, yet his ultimate motive is more cerebral and
motivational. “I encourage people to embrace life. I am a big believer
in making things happen, there is no such thing as ‘I can’t.’ I
am all about positivity.”
He sure is. Spending time with Dr. Joe is an altered state. He has the
ability to rearrange your molecules and find a heart-based solution
within a therapeutic landscape steeped in physical rehabilitation.
“I can turn the stiffest person into a young mobile one again.
I care about people, and I care about their outcome. It’s not just
about money - I give people value and I’m honest.”
Dr. Joe is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist with 25
years as a clinician, a physical therapist, and 29 years as a fitness
trainer. He understands varied medical conditions and their ramifications
on the body and mind.
While most personal trainers (or physical therapists) are thinking
about past success, Dr. Joe is creating a future from the deepest
part of his being.
“People need to be cared for - my secret sauce is love. I love
people and care for them. I see people going down the wrong path
and aging rapidly. Their joints are locking up, they’re losing flexibility
and feeling old. I work with people to improve their physical
strength and mind-set.”
The results are in every sphere of his client’s being. “Joe Martin is
truly an amazing physical therapist. He is thorough, caring and always
goes above and beyond. He communicates with family members
(and healthcare providers) to make sure everyone’s on the
same page and no stone left unturned. It is very rare to find someone
who takes such pride in their work, connects well with patients, and
the entire family. We are truly blessed to have him here to transform
our healthcare for the better,” said Dr. Alexander Krishtul.
That is Dr. Joe’s master plan. He sees the light where there might be
darkness – he sees possibilities where hope may be lost. And he always
rises to the occasion to support others to thrive, not just survive.
His concierge service ranges from one-on-one and small group
personal training, muscle-gun stretch sessions, physical therapy, as
well as home or office fitness room design.
Quantum Care
Be Happy…Be Healthy
BY diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Dr. Stacy Musselman helps you reach the stars with her Quantum
Care program. This holistic healthcare program provides you with easy
to follow steps and guidance to live your most joyful and healthy life.
She does this using Functional Medicine principles in conjunction
with a holistic approach to healthcare that puts the patient
first.
She addresses symptoms and restores your health and wellness
using in-depth bloodwork analysis. This helps to identify underlying
causes of disease and restores balance and ease forms of un-wellness.
“The Functional Medicine approach works to find the root cause
of your symptoms or conditions and works to prevent others,” said
Dr. Musselman.
This is done by looking for the patterns and trends in comprehensive
bloodwork. By uncovering the underlying conditions - not
just the symptoms - you can achieve long-lasting results.
58 | july 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Patients wholeheartedly agree.
“Before the Quantum Care program with Dr. Musselman, I wasn’t
getting a full night’s rest and my energy levels were low. Now I feel
balanced and full of energy. It was incredible to see all the information
Dr. Musselman’s bloodwork reveals!”
With Quantum Care the patient is involved in the process, and
not a helpless onlooker. “A varied approach is used to gather information
about your current health, diet and lifestyle. This uncovers
ALL of the factors that might be contributing to your symptoms and
health conditions.”
Quantum Care Protocols are highly individualized and designed
to promote your long-term health and wellness.
This personalized program is what separates Dr. Musselman
from others in her field. She cares about the patient, and is invested
in your positive outcomes and long lasting harmony.
Her clients are aware of her commitment and are grateful for her
intuitive and well-honed functional medicine tools.
“The Quantum Care program helped me tremendously in healing
my body and spirit. Learning the program and getting my body
back in balance gives me inner peace and makes me feel safe. I recommend
Quantum Care and Dr. Musselman to anyone who wants
to better themselves physically and spiritually. The results will
amaze you. Thank you Dr. Musselman, you are awesome!!!”
Are you interested in losing weight? Having trouble falling asleep
or staying asleep? Is your sex drive waning? Dr. Musselman can
help you achieve your goals and feel your best, all while enjoying
the process. “I lost 35 pounds with Dr. Musselman’s program and
never felt better,” said one patient.
This preventative approach and non-synthetic protocols are vital
to creating a long healthy and pain-free life. Why wait for a symptom
to manifest just to take a prescription pill when all the important
information is in your bloodwork?
By looking at the patterns and the probability of dysfunction in
bloodwork, Dr. Musselman can identify things other doctors cannot.
That is key to gaining optimal health and a happier existence,
especially in these challenging times.
Prevention and a healthy lifestyle not only increase your health
and wellbeing, but also your longevity. And, the most important
thing – being pain free.
Have you ever been to a doctor and said you didn’t feel well, and
the doctor’s response was: “Everything looks fine, just take this pill.”
Dr. Musselman understands there is a better approach. That approach
is the Quantum Care way.
Patients agree. “Dr. Musselman was able to address issues my
other doctors couldn’t. I recommend her to all my clients and they
all come back to me with success stories!”
The great news is that Dr. Musselman and The Quantum Care
Program is now available in Boca Raton! Treatment is administered
By Diane Feen | Photos by melissa korman
If you haven’t heard of Chuck
Halberg or Stuart & Shelby
then you must be new in town.
Halberg is the founder and President of Stuart & Shelby
Development. This Delray Beach construction company
provides turnkey development and general contracting
services for custom homes, workforce housing, and larger renovation
projects.
60 | july 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“This year marks my 52nd year in the construction industry and
16 years as founder of Stuart & Shelby Development.”
These days Stuart & Shelby is busier than ever but Halberg continues
his routine of working 8-12 hours per day, 6 days a week.
As much as he talks about slowing down, it seems more like a
pipe dream than a reality. Halberg always has his hand in something,
whether building in Palm Beach County, or a 15-home
workforce housing project further north in Fort Pierce. The company
currently has over 30 sites in the construction process.
They recently finished restoring six historical homes and have
five new ones in the planning or permitting stage. “The process
is handled by clients and architects, but there are guidelines to
follow and you get a lot of surprises when rebuilding. There are
a lot of challenges but we love keeping our Delray history.”
Halberg is proud of their new headquarters at The Coastal
Center in Delray Beach. The company has grown to 20 employees
over the past 18 months and are getting acclimated to their
new expansive 3,600-square-foot office.
Halberg also had the good fortune to purchase back (and move
into) the 1924 historic Franklin house in 2019. It is a home he
helped save in 2010 and then donated to the Delray Beach Community
Land Trust.
“I always loved The Franklin house. We went from a 5,100
square foot house to a 1,400-square-foot but recently added a
large 2 car garage, family room, master bedroom suite and pool.
It is a 1924 shotgun house that’s only 25-feet wide and is one of
the cutest homes in Delray Beach.”
Stuart & Shelby continues to be a family affair. Wife Pam has
been a realtor for nine years and is currently selling two spec
homes for the company in the up-and-coming Osceola-park
neighborhood. Stuart & Shelby has four other private custom
homes in Osceola Park.
Son Shelby is the founder of Blank Frame Films a video production
company based in Delray Beach. He often travels out of
state for work. His wife Lauren is a favorite around the Halberg
homestead.
Son Stuart is CEO of Logitix, a ticketing platform company for
the sports and entertainment industry.
Halberg doesn’t have grandchildren, but he has pups Sammie
(who goes to work with Halberg), Gus, and grand-pups Brady
and Presley.
There is another side to Halberg that everyone who knows him
admires – his philanthropy and selflessness.
“Chuck Halberg has impacted the quality of life in Delray Beach
with his generosity and love for the city. His consistent loyal philanthropy
is remarkable. Chuck is a local businessman constantly
giving back with his support for the police, fire fighters, education,
the arts, etc. For decades, Chuck has made the Delray Beach community
a better place,” said Perry DonFrancisco, President Delray
Citizens for Delray Police.
Chuck helped raise money for the police department’s new ice
cream truck that rides around neighborhoods in Delray bringing
joy to children. He is a co-founder of Impact 100 for Men and the
Delray Beach Initiative.
He also raises funds to purchase Thanksgiving dinner for the
Delray Beach Fire and Police departments. The extra funds go to
their Holiday Toy Drive. The Boy’s Market caters the entire meal.
People who donated drive in a caravan (over 30 vehicles last year)
to deliver the food to the six-fire stations and police headquarters.
“It was our 8th Thanksgiving providing these well-deserved meals,
with over 100 people donating $100 each.”
On June 22 the Impact 100 Men gave out two $25,000 grants –
one to KOP Mentoring Network (run by Mr. C. Ron Allen) and one to
EJS Project (run by Emanuel Dupree Jackson Jr.). Both these longtime
nonprofits mentor local youth.
Chuck is also on the board of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Last year he raised $77,000 on his “Flat Stanley Rides a Harley
for Kids and Cops” trip. He rode 6,000 miles on his 2020 Harley
Tri Glide Ultra Classic bike and covered 14 states in 16 days to raise
funds for 10 local non-profits.
Chuck also supports many non-profits around Delray Beach and
volunteers his time and services to those in need. That’s why Jeff
Perlman, former mayor of Delray Beach, has nothing but accolades
to bestow upon this man of many talents.
“Chuck is one-of-a-kind. It’s hard to quantify how valuable he is
to our community. His generosity is legendary and his energy for
supporting good causes is inspirational. He has a big heart, always
means well, and never says no to a good cause. I think he may be the
best friend this town has.”
His clients also sing his praises.
“Burke and I are delighted with the work that you, Dave and
Steve did on our condo. Burke and I loved working with Steve, he
is a gem. He kept track of all the moving parts and demonstrated
repeatedly that he cared about the job and the result. Steve kept
track of the things that we asked for, and suggested improvements
to things we weren’t smart enough to think about. We are grateful
for everything you’ve done for us,” said Karen and Burke Murray.
POSH PROPERTIES
Realtors Take the Local
Market to New Heights
By Nicol Jenkins | photos by melissa korman
Posh Properties has made a name for itself in the South Florida
Real Estate market. The Real Estate brokerage continues to expand
the business with top producing agents and a roster of luxury
property listings along the coast and around town. With over 52
Realtors, Posh Properties continues to grow while focusing on their
customer’s needs, which Jerilyn believes is the core of their success.
agents understand the business of real estate, they
also know how to acclimate to a constantly changing
“Posh
market. Our agents have a strong work ethic, and desire
to create and sustain their own successful real estate practice,” says
Jerilyn Walter, Broker/Owner of Posh Properties.
“If they don’t understand the real workload of real estate, their
practice will not survive. Understanding how to advise your buyers
when to start the search and close, and sellers when to list and the
best pricing, is only a few of the reasons our agents enjoy strong
referral and repeat business.”
Some of the top producing agents at Posh Properties share their
success stories and insight into the local real estate market.
Jody Coltogirone, PA
Broker Associate Jody Coltogirone
brings a vast experience and knowledge
that started 16 years ago in an industry
that has changed significantly.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Jody relocated
to South Florida 35 years ago, and
her business continues to thrive thanks to
her ability to stay connected to previous
customers, friends, and referrals.
“As a licensed real estate broker associate
and a mortgage loan originator as well
as the managing broker for Posh Properties
in Ocean Ridge, my knowledge goes well
beyond just buying or selling a home. My strength has always been
my work ethic. When you are buying or selling your home, it is
essential that you work with a professional brokerage that can get
you through the transaction seamlessly,” said Jody, adding, “Posh
Properties offers three locations in Pineapple Grove, Ocean Ridge,
and our recent opening of our office in Lantana, on Ocean Ave., we
enjoy strong ties with the local communities, charities, chamber
of commerce and business leaders. We understand our customers
have busy lives and appreciate accountability and trust.”
“Our office locations are incredible, we are able to enjoy a great
deal of people driving down the coast that stop in and inquire about
purchasing a property near the beach, or our vibrant downtown areas.
Everyone loves the area and wants to live the Florida lifestyle.
Right now, many longtime homeowners are selling properties and
taking advantage of the soaring market values. Many of these older
homes are being replaced with newer more modern architecture,
taking advantage of the water views and walkability to the beach.
South Florida is one of the most desirable places to live, work, play,
raise a family, and retire. Being a property owner or investor can offer
tax breaks, cash flow, and tremendous gains in equity,” said Jody.
Paige Fiedorowicz, PA
Real Estate Associate Paige Fiedorowicz, PA is a top producing
agent at Posh Properties.
“Originally, I wanted to get into real estate for the variety of ways
real estate can positively affect your life financially, from becoming
a realtor to flipping homes, and acquiring rental properties.
But then, I fell in love with meeting new people and helping them
acquire the same goals. I have the best clients; if they were a complete
stranger in the beginning, we end the process as great friends,
which I love,” said Paige, adding, “I am very persistent, transparent,
and diverse. I like to make sure my clients know exactly what is going
on at all times and make them feel 100% comfortable throughout
the process. I have no problem going above and beyond any
expectations to guarantee I deliver.”
Paige is very active in the Delray Beach community, where she has
been a resident for more than five years.
“I am always adapting to new trends and keeping myself active
within the community. I have been in Delray Beach for five years and
have made incredible connections that will last a lifetime. Always
making sure I am available around the clock
and working diligently for my clients,” said
Paige, “The City of Delray Beach is truly just
scratching the surface. While there has been
an increase in home values, I truly think there
is still an immense amount of growth to happen.
New construction is around every corner,
and the City itself is continuing to invest more
money into it to create the ultimate lifestyle.”
Before becoming a Realtor, Paige was a
basketball player and has used that discipline
that comes with being an athlete throughout
her successful career.
“I graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI in 2011
as a student-athlete. I received a 4-year Basketball Scholarship and
now have graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Communications
and Marketing. The discipline, commitment, and sacrifice you make
as a student athlete is something that is instilled deep inside me. It
has 100% shaped me into who I am and how I operate today. I have
many Professional Athlete clients who I have been able to teach and
guide how to invest into real estate to create wealth, which has been
very rewarding experiencing my collegiate and professional career
connect full circle,” she said. “I am a glass half full type of person. So,
no matter the obstacle I know with hard work, persistent strategy,
and effective communication I can overcome anything.”
Paige currently has available a waterfront
home in Boca Harbour. With 52 ft of water
frontage, direct ocean access, and southern
exposure, this home is stunning! Built in 2016,
the home underwent a full custom renovation
from 2021-2022. Featuring 5 bedrooms and 5 full baths with a salt,
heated pool and spa, it truly is one of a kind!
“I love being a female in the industry. As a woman, I think it’s incredibly
empowering being able to compete with the best, but also
be a mother and a partner. Finding the balance is not always easy but
us women truly can do it all!” said Paige.
HY PA – HY MA
A Classy Celebration of
Fashion and Tradition
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Hy Pa – Hy Ma is a breath of fresh air. The dark
wood interior, the walls decorated with art, and
the eclectic fashion stance that never wavers.
Welcome to one of the last bastions of boutique fashion
excellence. The shopping experience – and the clothing
– are as unique as their heritage.
It was 44 years ago that Nance Bernet opened Hy Pa – Hy Ma in
the Waterway Shops in East Delray Beach.
Though fashion is their main entrée now, this cozy clothing boutique
originally sold fruit, candy, and nick-knacks like vases, art,
and accessories.
But as times changed, so did Hy Pa – Hy Ma. It evolved into a
place of fashion wonderment. A place where you could find novelty
tunic tops with contrast color piping or flutter tiered dresses with
shoulder ties. Dressing in Florida means color is a cool compliment
to style. Exuberant reds, orange, blue, and yellow sit neatly by traditional
neutrals and black.
But there is nothing neutral about the origin of this Delray legend.
It may have a fashion pedigree that exceeds those around
them, but Hy Pa – Hy Ma continues to stay on trend with fashion,
whether it’s comfy pull-on palazzo pants or rhinestone trimmed
tunics that cover a multitude of imperfections.
66 | july 2022 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
But, when it comes to fashion at Hy Pa – Hy Ma there are no imperfections,
only perfectly curated clothing and accessories. That’s
because owner Nance studied at Parsons School of Design and was
a fashion illustrator who loved painting and fashion. Her daughter
Mia is equally as talented when it comes to choosing the crème de
la crème of fashion.
“This season women have been coming in and saying, ‘I’m so
happy you’re still here.’ There have been so many established businesses
closing in Delray, they’re thrilled we’re still here,” said Mia.
And that’s a good thing. Where would our fashion sensibilities go
without stores like Hy Pa – Hy Ma? Where would we go for a fashion
restoration of our creative souls?
The answer is nowhere. That is why we honor and covet the
greatness of material matter that sits in this shop in the heart
of Delray. “It feels so good to shop in a store that makes you feel
beautiful and cared for. I love Hy Pa – Hy Ma because I find novelty
dresses and pant outfits for day or evening you can’t find anywhere
else,” said Susan.
She’s right. Lace trimmed white tunics are matched with bold accessories
that compliment the austerity of this canvas. Printed knit
pants are a comfortable piece of walking artwork for the body and
can be paired with any top.
COPYRIGHTED

The best part of Hy Pa
– Hy Ma is that you can
meander around the
racks and come up with
two-piece pants outfits
that scream comfort and style. Some have flutter sleeves while
others have contrast color trim or novelty beading.
For the more avant-garde fashion lover there are asymmetrical
tunic tops with fringe. If you love color and comfort they
have bright pink and white oversized tunics with wide sleeves
and novelty inserts. There’s also a half-price rack and $50 rack
all year long.
The most exciting part of shopping at Hy Pa – Hy Ma is the
thrill of the hunt. You don’t – and won’t – see anything like
their selection of clothing and accessories anywhere else.
Nance knows this all too well. “The store has evolved a lot
since we started it. We were one of the first tenants in the
building and when we opened Delray was a laid-back quiet
town. Women wanted caftans and muumuus. Comfort was
very important because Delray was a beach town.”
Well, guess what? Since the pandemic women have gone
back in time so to speak. They want comfort and casual dressing
to match the “work from home” mentality the last few
years have brought us.
Those who are traveling want clothing that can be rolled up
and put in a suitcase. That’s why Mia has sourced some of the
most comfortable knit pants in both wide leg and narrow in
neutral colors. They won’t wrinkle, and if you decide to go for
the chocolate cake three days in a row, you can still fit into
your trousers.
Hy Pa – Hy Ma also has a full selection of necklaces in choker
style, double and triple strand beading, and longer dangling geometrics.
There are evening clutch bags in colorful leathers or metallics,
rhinestone pins, and faux pearls for the lady of the house.
Let’s face it, fashion today is a smorgasbord of frivolity
mixed with a huge dose of sensibility. And, no one knows that
better than Nance and Mia.
Come to where your head and heart can serenade your torso
with fashion abandon. Enjoy the serenity and creativity that
surrounds every corner of this store.
Ellie’s 50’s Diner
The owners of Ellie’s 50’s Diner have been turning the clock back
for 32 years on North Federal Highway. But after cooking up a feast
seven days a week – and letting everyone dip their toe in the innocence
of the 50’s – they are closing this iconic landmark.
Bob got the inspiration for this 50’s themed hot spot from his
childhood in New Jersey. “I told my wife there is nothing like that
here so I should open a 50’s diner. All my friends told me I was nuts,
but I proved them wrong.”
So wrong in fact that Ellie’s has succeeded where other restaurants
have failed. Like Mount Rushmore or Worth Avenue, Ellie’s
had a loyal following who made Ellie’s their daily pilgrimage for
sustenance and sweetness.
Customers like the Simon family migrated to Ellie’s every Sunday
for breakfast in the Marilyn Room.
“Ellie’s Diner was a staple in our family every Sunday after church
for decades. We were at the ‘Simon table’ in the Marilyn room.
Anywhere from 12 to 14 people would share stories and enjoy a
great breakfast. It felt like being at home there, welcomed with a
“Good Morning – your table is ready” from Ellie or Bob,” said Laura
Simon, of the Downtown Development Authority.
There are many families who consider Ellie’s a landmark of
health and harmony, friendship and kinship. Julie and Lou Paoletti
celebrated their son’s baptism at Ellie’s, New Year’s Eve, and they
came to Ellie’s on their wedding day. “It’s an end of an era, there
is no place around here with a family-oriented happy atmosphere.
This signifies old Delray, a throwback to the 50s,” adds Lou.
If you ask Bob about closing the restaurant he built in 1989 he’ll
tell you it feels bittersweet.
“W“We have a lot of good memories, and a lot of special customers
who will really miss us and we’ll really miss them. Some of the
same people who came the first day still come here.”
That’s for sure. Eddie, who lived in Briny Breezes, came for lunch
every day for 30 years. “He used to bring a crossword puzzle and
do the whole thing here. Even at 98 years-old he drove here every
day,” said Bob.
It’s no surprise that Ellie’s was a landmark of success. The waitresses
wore 50s garb and moved easily around the soda fountainera
landscape as if they were Sandra Dee incarnate. The large three
Saying Goodbye –
Sad to See You Go
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Parting is such sweet sorrow –
and no one knows that better
than Bob and Ellie Smela.
page vinyl covered menu heralded favorites such as the “Be-Bop-
A-Lula” breakfast, “Calendar Girl” hot plate special, and “Return to
Sender” pork roast.
Though the menu could take you down a 50’s midnight stroll,
Ellie’s was also famous for Lobster Night, Prime Rib night, BBQ Rib
night and homemade meatloaf. Not only were Bob and Ellie on the
premises daily, it was also an homage to the days of simplicity.
The restroom doors had etchings of Marilyn Monroe and James
Dean, and the black and white check linoleum floor made you want
to get up and swing dance. The juke box, statue of Marily Monroe,
and poodle skirts set the scene for a Hollywood remake of “Grease.”
Working hard is nothing new to Bob. His career trajectory would
make Warren Buffet blush, and his steady presence and success
followed him everywhere. As a teen he had a newspaper route, he
worked at a horse farm and delivered groceries on his bike. The
grown-up Bob owned a bar, a paint, wallpaper and decorating business,
and a sandwich shop with three lunch trucks.
He met Ellie on a blind date over 48 years ago (she was head
teller at Barnett Bank) and they have two children, eight grandchildren,
and one great grandson.
Their success was part and parcel of their devotion and pas-
sion. Ellie held court in poodle skirts, bobbie socks, and
scarves, and her smile could melt a statue. Bob devoted
his life to making customers happy with comfort food that
brought back memories of family dinners and radio days.
Their head cook, Tony has been with them for 25 years and
so has head waitress, Ingrid.
The smiles, laughter, and laidback atmosphere that filled the
restaurant would have a designer label if you could capture it
and bottle its lightness of being. The restaurant is busier now
that the days are dwindling to its final curtain call. But Bob
and Ellie are equally sanguine and sad to take their final bow.
If you think they are going to drive off into the sunset in a
large RV decorated with Elvis, you’re wrong. “We had an RV
when we were younger, but not now. We live in Delray, have
a farmhouse in Wisconsin, and occasionally take a road-trip
to Vermont.”
One thing’s for sure Bob and Ellie have not lost sight of
their humble beginnings. “I slept on a cot in the restaurant
the first two years,” said Bob as he recounts the past. They
also bought the property behind Ellie’s and turned it into a
party room called “The Flamingo Ballroom.”
As the small Marilyn memorabilia and 50s radios get sold to
eager customers, Bob and Ellie keep their heads focused forward.
“We are going to miss our customers. It breaks my heart to
say goodbye, but it’s just too much to do at my age.”
One person who helped Bob and Ellie time travel from the
50s to the present is Cary Roman of LivingFLA.com. “Cary has
done a fantastic job for Ellies. Our business has increased so
much since he started our social media.”
Roy Simon, who has been coming to Ellie’s since the first
day adds: “When the large Dining Room was added, we continued
to enjoy the ‘taste’ of Ellie’s, at social events and meetings.
Family festivities were held there, and we have so many memories!
We will miss Bob, Ellie, and all the ladies who treated
us as family.”
The curtain goes dark on July 10. Until then all are welcome.
Routine Chlorine Maintenance this Month
What? Chlorine maintenance is a temporary process that uses
system– it’s part of routine system maintenance.
When? July 10 -30, 2022
While many will not notice any change to their tap water, some
may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor during this time. If you use
a home dialysis machine, own a home aquarium, or manage stores
and restaurants with fish and shellfish tanks, please seek professional
advice for removing chlorine residuals from your tap water.
We’re Committed to Water ConSERVAtion
and StrengtHEning Our Infrastructure
Last month, the City Commission approved Ordinances to adjust
water and wastewater rates for the first time in 13 years and to enforce
three-day irrigation schedules. We have made such progress
planning for necessary capital improvement projects such as our
new water plant. The water and sewer rate adjustments will help
fund that project as well as upgrades to existing infrastructure.
Water Rate Adjustment Overview
While the first adjustment goes into effect on July 1, 2022, you will
not see the adjustment until you receive your August 2022 water
bill. Despite the adjustments over the next 5 years, the average water
bill of a single-family residence in our city in 2026, will be $75.66,
$5.59 below that of a homeowner in a neighboring city today. To
learn more about water and sewer rates, visit www.delraybeachfl.
Irrigation Ordinance Overview
Most lawns in South Florida only need 3/4-inch to 1 inch of water
per week to supplement rainfall. To conserve water resources at
the request of the South Florida Water Management District, the City
Commission approved an Ordinance to enforce the three-day irrigation
schedule. To avoid fines, Delray Beach residents who use potable
water for irrigation with odd home addresses should water on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, and those with even home addresses
should water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. To learn
more visit www.delraybeachfl.gov/irrigation.

This Month in History
Looking Back
juLY in History
By Lewis David
Looking back at important dates that
took place in the month of July both
here in America and across the globe.
July 1st, 1863 and 1867
• The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the pivotal battles of the
American Civil War, begins.
• Canada Day, a national holiday in Canada, is commemorated
when the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada were united
to become the Dominion of Canada.
July 2nd, 1881 and 1964
• President James A. Garfield was
shot and wounded as he entered a
railway station in Washington D.C.
The wound would prove fatal, and
he would die a few months later on
September 19th.
• The Civil Rights Act of 1964
was signed by President Lyndon
B. Johnson, which would prohibit
discrimination most notably in the field
of voter registration, paving the way for
African Americans to gain equal footing in elections.
July 4th, 1776
• The Continental Congress officially approved the Declaration
of Independence, signaling their desire for independence from the
British Empire. Today it is celebrated as a national holiday in the
United States.
July 5th, 1775
• The Continental Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition
in an effort to reconcile with the British Empire. However, King
George III refused to receive the letter
and proclaims the American
colonists to be in an open
state of rebellion.
provides the first inoculation
against rabies to a
young boy who had been
bitten by a rabid dog.
July 7th, 1898
• A resolution is signed by President William McKinley officially
annexing Hawaii. Two years later it would be incorporated into the
U.S. as a territory and over 50 years later it would become a state.
July 9th, 1868
• The 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution is
ratified. The amendment served to define U.S. citizenship and
prevent states from limiting citizenship on a discriminatory basis.
It also barred those who partook in the Confederate rebellion
during the Civil War from holding public office.
July 12th, 1943
• The largest tank battle in history, the Battle of Kursk, takes
place during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. The result of the
battle was a Soviet victory and was the final strategic offensive the
Germans were able to launch in the East, as the Allied invasion of
Sicily would divert Hitler’s attention.
July 13th, 1787
• Congress enacts the
Northwest Ordinance, which
outlined the procedures
for turning the territories
into a state. It would be
this ordinance that led
to the establishment of
five states in the area
north of the Ohio River.
It also made clear that the
new states would be equal
with the original 13.
of the European Continent.”
• The first popularly elected leader in Russia’s thousand-year
history is elected in the form of Boris Yeltsin as he took his oath of
office.
July 15th, 1918
• In the First World War, Germany launched their last major
offensive during the Battle of the Marne. Following their repulsion
at the hands of American, British, and Italian forces, the Germans
would not launch another offensive, eventually agreeing to an
armistice in November.
July 16th, 1945 and 1969
• The experimental bomb “Fat Boy” was set off in the New
Mexican desert. The atomic bomb created a mushroom cloud that
rose above 40,000 feet and emitted heat three times to temperature
of the sun, annihilating all plant and animal life in a mile radius.
• The Apollo 11 Lunar Landing mission begins with its liftoff
from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
as U.S. astronaut Neil
Armstrong took man’s
first step on the moon.
Helping is Their Cause –
Serving is Their Mission
It’s pretty hard to get everyone to agree on anything
these days – whether cultural, social or political.
But there is one thing that everyone agrees on – that Judy Fenney
and Kathleen Megan are as close to saintly as you can get.
The two women started the Interfaith Committee for Social
Services and have nurtured (and helped) those in need. Some don’t
have a place to sleep, while others need clothing, food, or healthcare.
But nothing is too hard – or impossible – for these two women
with the patience and perseverance of an action hero.
They started their foray into selfless service when they met at St
Paul’s Episcopal Church. Megan and Fenney were co-chairmen of the
Church’s annual fund raiser, “The Jumble Sale.”
They also cook and serve a spaghetti and meatball dinner every
Monday night (during the school year) for children at Paul’s Place, an
after-school program for Haitian children in Delray.
The women volunteered at Caring Kitchen, a division of CROS
Ministry until 2017. When the organization lost their lease, someone
needed to take up the cause and move forward for the less fortunate.
Megan and Fenney took the torch and ran with it.
“A transition committee was created to explore how to offer services
and we were appointed to the committee. We always seem to
be sitting in a place where someone says, ’Would you two take it on?’”
And their answer is always, “Yes we will.”
Being of service is part of the fiber of both women’s genetic code.
Fenney was active in the Junior League and saw how helping others
enlightens the giver as much as those who receive. “I never had experience
with inner-city people until the Junior League. It gave me a
whole new outlook, another life.”
Megan felt the same way. When she moved from Saratoga Springs
with her husband to Florida, she looked for charity work. “I started
volunteering at Caring Kitchen cutting veggies, cooking, and then office
work. Judy and I became instant friends.”
They also became two women on a mission – one that looks outward
and asks, “What can I do to help those less fortunate?”
The answer was a lot.
The women set out to do what they could for those without resources.
They took over the social services division of Caring Kitchen
and invited 12 local churches to help, as well as the Delray Beach
Police Outreach, Family Promise, and St. Vincent’s Care Ministry.
Their first task was to get a place where homeless folks could receive
mail. After that was completed, they set out to help with social
services. They partnered with Family Promise and Delray Beach Police
Outreach to help with their shower truck, that provides bi-weekly
showers for those in need.
They also get them clean clothing, towels, and hygiene products
from generous sponsors such as Fleet Feet (for sneakers), Delray City
Laundry, Belzers Hardware, and RECO recovery.
While some people look down on those marginalized in society,
Fenney and Megan see everyone as equal.
“Judy and Kathleen are always respectful of the dignity of each
hungry and homeless client. They are neither condescending nor
‘holier than thou,’ but rather what they do is done with joy and gratitude,”
said Rev. Paul J. Kane, Rector, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Retired priest Marcia Beam also sees their goodness. “We honored
Judy and Kathleen last year (the Eta Phi Beta sorority) because of all
they do with the homeless. During Covid they made sure people got
shots and had counseling if they needed it. They are such nice people
and always brighten up my day.”
They also brighten up the day for others who see them as role
models (and follow their lead). They’re active members of Delray
Beach Initiative to End Homelessness, and members of Delray Chamber
of Commerce’s non-profit council.
Fenney serves as a Vestry member at St. Pauls Episcopal Church
and is a board member of the Delray Beach Drug Council. She’s been
a volunteer at Caring Kitchen for the past 10 years. Megan is on the
board of Episcopal Charities of SE Florida.
For those who have fallen through the cracks, both Fenney and
Megan are there to catch their spirits. “Every year we organize a memorial
service (at St. Paul’s Church) for the ones who have passed. It
means so much to everyone who knew them. It tears you apart – you
know them so well and care about them.”
It is these acts of selfless service that have Ezra Krieg so enamored.
“Judy and Kathleen walk the talk! They put the time, energy, and their
hearts into fulfilling the mission of their faith to help those in need.
Through their efforts, others are inspired to get involved and are all
working together. I am proud to call them my friends.”
So is Officer Damien Ferraiolo (from Community Outreach at Delray
Police Department) who helps with the shower truck.
“Judy and Kathleen are amazing women dedicated to serving the
less fortunate in our community. They provide much needed services,
especially the shower truck. Their clients get clean clothes, a
haircut, and receive outreach and peer support. Individuals leave the
shower truck feeling like a new person. I am proud to partner with
Judy and Kathleen to make a difference in our community.”
And making a difference is their creed. “Our mission is to help the
homeless get housing and jobs and become active members of society.”
On a personal note – Megan just celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary
with husband Charlie. They have four children and 13 grandchildren.
Judy, recently widowed, has two children and five grandchildren.
Both women know to whom much is given much is expected. And
they deliver – in spades.
“Anyone who shows up at the shower truck will not only be provided
the human right of water, sanitation, and hygiene; but they will
also be served a huge serving of love. It is so rewarding to see the
difference you can make in someone’s life.”
Simple Cool
Summer Recipes
During the warm summer months, we all look to eat
lighter. Here are some easy recipes for summer meals.
Grilled Chicken Souvlaki
ingredients
1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
3 tbsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. ground coriander
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
Kosher salt
Pepper
1 pt. grape tomatoes
2 clove garlic
3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1/2 head romaine lettuce
4 scallions
1/2 c. Fresh dill
4 pieces pita bread
Lowfat Greek yogurt
8 skewers
COPYRIGHTED
directions
1. Heat grill to medium-high. In a large bowl, toss the chicken with 1
tablespoon oil, then the coriander, oregano and 1/4 teaspoon each
salt and pepper. Thread onto skewers.
2. Place the tomatoes and garlic on a large piece of heavy-duty foil.
Drizzle with 1 tablespoon oil and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon each
salt and pepper. Fold and seal the foil to form a pouch.
3. Place the pouch and skewers on the grill and cook, shaking the
pouch and turning the kebabs occasionally, until the chicken is
cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes. Just before removing from the grill,
brush the chicken with 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, toss the lettuce, scallions, and dill with
the remaining 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and tablespoon oil, plus
¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. If desired, grill pita bread until
warm, 1 minute each side.
5. Spread the pita with yogurt, if desired, then stuff with the chicken,
tomatoes, and salad.
What Are the Best Foods to
Balance My Dog and Cat Diets?
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
This question is asked in thousands of pet stores, animal hospitals,
feed and health food stores, plus many other facilities
that have related pet services. There are many brands out
there proclaiming “optimal nutrition,” “complete and balanced” and
even “the best.” If it were true, why are there thousands of brands
using hundreds of ingredients, many of which are highly processed
and synthetic? Does the phrase “all natural” mean “as found in nature”
or that a “natural material” is part of the process? Is it even
possible that a “perfect” food exists since the body is dynamic, ever
changing, as the environment is as well?
When we understand that dogs and cats are carnivores, the first
food we think of is meat. While this is the most general term, it actually
refers to the components in animal-based products. Within
this group are red meats, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy along with
all the nutritional components contained within. These components
include proteins, fats, specific vitamins, minerals, enzymes,
hormones, amino and fatty acids, as well as probiotics and others
in a bio-available form. The digestive systems of carnivores are developed
to convert these components into energy that builds the
body. Different organs, muscles and cuts of these components contain
varying quantities of afore referenced, which makes the meal
rotational in nutrients.
Quantities and quality of nutrients can vary greatly, it’s imperative
that we employ this same rotational presentation to our pets.
It is because of the ever-changing requirements of the body that a
static food such as kibble or other commercial foods are less than
ideal. When our BioCompleteTM entrees are formulated for our
carnivore pets, we are not only rotating the species of the meats but
also the cuts including the nutrient dense organ meats. The body
requires this variety. It is also vital that the prey be raised as clean
and naturally raised as possible.
To better understand the importance of this approach, we understand
that all foods not only bring specific nutrients but also
remove specific toxins and waste. Ruminant animals such as cattle,
lamb and bison are designed to eat grass and forage. It is then converted
into healthy Omega 3 and 9 but when fed grain-based diets,
they produce inflammatory Omega 6 and are also highly contaminated
with GMO’s and chemicals. Which is the healthier choice?
In the rotation is the addition of specific whole food herbs and botanical
extracts that they would naturally acquire through drinking water
from puddles, ponds and other natural sources should be included.
Raw cow’s and goat’s milk are a good source of Omega 3, Vitamin
A and probiotics, plus are great for inflammation and more. Both
are considered to be a superfood and contain even more vitamins,
minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, enzymes, protein, and fatty
acids that are utilized by the body. Goat’s milk is easier to digest for
those with lactose intolerance.
The nutritional values of conventionally raised chicken eggs are
much lower than those of pastured eggs. The nutritional profile of
duck eggs is different and far more superior to those of chicken eggs.
While pets do adapt to eating inappropriate foods to survive, pet
guardians have an obligation to provide the optimal species appropriate
entrees within the overall rotational approach to achieve
optimal nutrition and health. There is NO singular recipe that can
accomplish the health and balance that the body needs.
