ABOUT ME 

Hi! My name is Jen and this is a little bit about myself. First, I must say this project was a lot of fun. 

Like a book from my gradeschool years lol. I don’t know if children today still do book reports, but when 

I was in school, they were required and boy did I dread reading the assigned books then having to 

summarize them! I loved reading books that interested me and hopefully this will interest you. I created 

it for anyone that needs help with identification. For the novice glass collectors that buy animal covered 

dishes because they fall in love with the way they look or the type of animals they are, or simply for 

their colors. For the avid collectors who enjoy buying a few of each animal regardless of the maker. For 

the veteran collectors who may have hundreds of glass dishes who never cease to amaze me with their 

beautiful collections. For the people that have inherited or purchased someone’s entire collection or 

part of a collection and need help to identify things. For the people like me that are meticulous about 

every detail needing to label things and just absolutely need to know the whats, whens, whos, hows and 

whys of the animal dishes they own. For me, what started with one Asian yellow stained glass bunny on 

a nest, has flourished into a full blown collection of hundreds of mixed and matched animal covered 

“candy” dishes of all glass types and colors. No particular glass maker, just everything I can’t live 

without. LOL. Anyone that knows me would tell you that I stop at nothing, studying book after book 

searching for answers about my own glass animals until I find them. I have never been satisfied with a 

mystery….unless it involves me watching Columbo, my lifelong favorite television program! I am a 

mystery solver... a true detective. I get this from my Mother, Cindy -Sultana- Wheatley. I need to get to 

the bottom of a piece of unidentified glass. It drives me bananas not to know everything I can about 

each piece that I own. Next, I will tell you that the monetary value of my glassware means nothing to 

me. I collect it because I love it. However, unique and rare is always a find! Sure, like every collector, I 

love a bargain and have had to pass up many pieces that I could not afford. Ooooh the ones that got 

away. They haunt me. I can assure you that when I get a new addition to my collection, it has found its 

forever home. Someone before me and usually possibly before them owned these animal covered 

dishes making a kind of history that I can only imagine in my mind, its importance to each person. There 

is a reason behind every single glassware in every single dwelling. Glass symbolizes many things. It is 

proudly displayed. It is important to the person who owns it. I enjoy seeing the happiness glassware 

brings to people, especially these animal covered dishes. Who doesn’t love animals? I also enjoy seeing 

my collection knowing these pieces of history live on and hope that when I am long gone, they will be in 

other homes. My glass brings me peace; most peaceful in the evenings when the cabinet lights are on 

and the glass does its natural thing; what it was intended to do since the day it was made...look pretty! 

To me, it is reminiscent of having a year round Christmas Tree. Glass is AMAZING! I am a country girl 

through and through. I love all things nature. I am an avid bird watcher and an all around animal lover. I 

live in the beautiful state of Kentucky with my husband and our two dogs, Monkey and Johnnie, who by 

the way, is named after my all time favorite singer, Johnny Cash.

boyd's crystal art glass 

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass in Cambridge Ohio was started in 1978 when Bernard C. Boyd 

and his son Bernard F. Boyd acquired Degenhart glass molds along with the 

Degenhart Glass factory. Bernard C's father Zack began working at Degenhart at the 

age of 76 in 1964. Throughout his entire life, he worked at different glass factories, 

including Cambridge Glass. While at Degenhart, Zack Boyd created unique slag 

colors. In 1968, after 4 years with Degenhart, he passed away and after his death, his 

son Bernard C. took over supervising the Degenhart Glass colors and chemical 

mixing department. Bernard C. had also worked at Cambridge since an early age. 

Bernard C. worked 10 full years at Degenhart all the while creating 200 non 

traditional glass colors for them. In 1978, 

when Elizabeth Degenhart sold her glass 

1st 5 years / no line 

factory to Boyd, he continued experimenting 

1978-1983 

with colors. Except for a handful of Signature 

2nd 5 years / 1 line Series colors, Boyd glass colors were poured 

1983-1988 

only once and never used again. In the end, 

3rd 5 years / 2 lines Boyd's Glass created around 300 colors, the 

1988-1993 

most colors ever made by any glass company. 

4th 5 years / 3 lines Bernard C passed away at 80 yrs old, the same 

1993-1998 

age his father Zack was when he died. His son, 

Bernard F. Boyd was the third generation glass 

5th 5 years / 4 lines 

maker in the Boyd family to run the business. 

1998-2003 

Bernard F. operated it with Sue his wife of 60 

6th 5 years / 'B' years and their son John. Bernard's wife Sue 

2003-2008 

hand painted some of the glassware. Most 

Boyd molds were once Degenhart molds, but

2008- 

some are original to Boyd. The 'D' inside the 

heart logo was removed and replaced by a 'B' 

inside a diamond. Signature Series salts and 5" 

# OF LINES INDICATE PRODUCTION YEARS 

animal covered dishes are marked with cursive 

'Boyd' in the base. The signature is part of the mold. Bernard F. also signed pieces 

upon request using his traditional gold paint pen. Hand painted glassware are 

initialed by the artists. Bernard and Sue retired and their son John, a 4th generation 

glass maker now operates Boyd Art Glass. Boyd's doors closed in 2014 after 36 years 

of hand pressing glass molds, but Boyd is kept very much alive today through the 

desires of collectors. Fred Wilkerson of Wilkerson Glass in West Virginia acquired 

several Boyd animal covered dish molds. He is currently reproducing them in UV 

reactive colors. These have Fred's logo on them, an 'F' with wings. The 'B' and 

diamond have been removed.

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass Bunny Salt is original to Boyd. It is not a reproduction. The bunny sits atop a basket 

weave base. Marked with 'B' inside a diamond. Lines added to the diamond indicate production years. Signature 

Series colors: Vaseline 11.17.98, Cobalt 02.28.02, Vaseline Carnival 10.27.03 and Milk White 08.04.06. These 4 

colors have 'Boyd' in the base instead of the diamond. 2 1/2" long.

Crisscross pattern on base. Base has a scalloped rim. Though the Asian lamb salt is 

seen on scalloped or smooth rimmed bases, the Asian dog has only been seen on 

scalloped rim. Unmarked.

BOYD DUCK SALT 

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass is not the first glass company to produce a Duck Salt. Boyd 

may not be a true reproduction of the original Central Glass* Duck Salt, circa 1890's. 

The bases are not alike, but the tops are very similar. The Boyd sits atop a basket 

weave base and Central is on a smooth rimmed base. Boyd Duck is marked with a 'B' 

inside a diamond. Lines added to the diamond indicate production years. Signature 

Series color: Vaseline. Signature Series have 'Boyd' in the base instead of the 

diamond. 2 1/2" long. 

Reproduced after 2000 by AA Importing in Cobalt Blue. Other colors possible. 

Crisscross pattern on base. Base rim is smooth, but may have slight scalloping. 

Bottom of base is plain. Unmarked.

bOYD 5" FROG 

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass 5" Frog was produced in 2001. Boyd borrowed the L.G. 

Wright mold belonging to National Milk Glass Collector's Society (NMGCS). Fewer 

than 100 Frogs were produced. Colors made were Cherry Red, Columbia Green and 

Vaseline. Base is marked with 'B' inside a diamond with 4 lines. 5 1/2" long. 

Some Boyd Frog dishes in transparent colors have the NMGCS logo (plunger). These 

are ***RARE*** and are NOT authentic commemorative CLUB pieces. These were 

mistakes. The NMGCS had Boyd pour a Mint Green Milk glass Frog in 1994 using L.G. 

Wright's lid with Boyd's split rib base. This Frog is marked with club logo. True 

commemorative pieces were/are only poured in Milk Glass.

bOYD 5" sWAN 

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass 5" Swan was produced in 1997. Boyd borrowed 

the L.G. Wright Swan lid mold which belonged to L.G. Wright. Boyd used 

their own split rib base. The Boyd Swan was only made in Cobalt Blue 

and less than 100 were produced. Base is marked 'B' inside a diamond 

with 3 lines. Lines added to the diamond indicate production years. 5 

1/2" long. 

Boyd base was used to make 1997 NMGCS* commemorative Club 

"Swan". Boyd poured the Club Swan in White Milk Glass. L.G. Wright 

Swan lid was used. Marked with NMGCS logo, year and location of 

convention: '97 MI

Boyd 5" turtle 

Boyd's Crystal Art Glass 5" Turtle was produced in 2003. Boyd borrowed the L.G. 

Wright mold belonging to the National Milk Glass Collector's Society (NMGCS). Fewer 

than 100 Turtles were produced. Colors made were Cobalt Blue, Columbia Green and 

Vaseline. Base is marked with 'B' inside a diamond with 4 lines. 5 1/2" long. 

Some Boyd Turtle dishes in transparent colors have the NMGCS logo (plunger). These are 

***RARE*** and are NOT authentic commemorative CLUB pieces. These were mistakes. 

The NMGCS had Boyd pour a Chocolate Milk Glass Turtle in 1996 using L.G Wright's lid 

with Boyd's split rib base. This Turtle is marked with the CLUB logo. True 

commemorative pieces were/are only poured in Milk Glass.
