I know that some of you thought (I hope so!) «where’s May Vans Magazine?»

As you will see in this issued, the last weeks have been INSANE!

Steve van doren in Emea, the Opening of Orefici and other many things....

However natalie found the time to write this special message to all!

We love creating impressions, long-lasting impressions, and we’re a creative brand, with a bunch of the

coolest people around that we proudly call Family.

However, there’s one person who’s by far the coolest and doesn’t just create impressions,

he creates a legacy.

So imagine how super-stoked we all were when we found out that Steve Van Doren would be visiting

EMEA for a tour of our market.

Steve started in Milan and for some of us, it was the first time we got to meet SVD face-to-face.

In a world full of zoom and Teams meetings, there’s still nothing better than that human interaction,

nothing better than looking someone in their eye and saying, ‘Hi, it’s great to meet you!!’

There’s also that part of your mind thinking would he live up to your expectations and more importantly

would you live up to his. With Steve, this isn’t something anyone needs to think about, and certainly not

worry. One of the most humble people you could ever meet, it quickly became evident why Vans is such

a people driven business. We visited 3 stores on the first day and each one felt like the first store Steve

had ever visited.

His passion, enthusiasm and genuine interest in the teams was evident from the first

minute and his legendary stories kept everyone smiling and engaged, like it was the first

time the story was being told.

The day ended as it had started, with smiles, laughter and enthusiasm.

I think everyone learnt a lot from Steve in such a

short period of time, and people also learnt a lot

about the Vans culture. Steve IS the DNA.

He represents everything that we all strive for

and everything that we try and instil into

ourselves, our teams and OUR brand.

So thanks Steve, thanks for everything, thanks for

being you. Let’s be inspired and let’s inspire

others to be the best they can be. We are lucky

enough to work for one of the coolest brands on

the planet, with one of the coolest cultures.

Embrace it, live it, shout from the rooftops about

it, after all, isn’t that what Steve would do?

COLLECTION BACKGROUND INFO

For this year’s Pride/OTW Gallery collection,

we have teamed up with with 3 global artists. Ashley Lukashevsky from NORA,

Kaitlin Chan from APAC and Sara Lorusso from EMEA.

With their support, we want to celebrate gender equality and inclusion through art.

LUKASHEVSKY

Ashley is creating beautiful Queer Minhwa* art, which is what

we used for our collection. She uses illustrations and visual

art as a tool to strengthen social movements for racial

justice, immigrant justice, climate justice, mental health and

LGBTQIA+ liberation. Her artwork features two queer lovers

embracing and floating. At the bottom of the artwork you can

see a Korean white folk tiger protecting the couple. The

artwork features also butterflies which represent

transformation and evolution. The artwork can be found

throughout this year’s Pride collection.

*Minhwa literally means "painting of the

people" or "popular painting". This type of

painting was often the work of anonymous

craftsmen who faithfully adhered to the styles,

canons and genres inherited from the past.

Minhwa also involved a magical dimension.

They were believed to possess beneficial

virtues and to protect the owner and his family

from evil forces.


Kaitlin

chan

The second artist chosen for our

Pride collection is Kaitlin Chan.

Kaitlin is a cartoonist and cultural

worker based in Hong Kong. Her

comics, zines and other projects

help support and shed light on the

LGBTQ+ community in Hong Kong

while keeping her connected to the

youth culture through creative

expression. Her work has appeared

in the iconic “The New Yorker” &

Vogue, amongst others. In 2018,

Kaitlin co-founded Queer Reads

Library.. a mobile collection of

books and independently published

zines centered around queer

subjectivity. They collaborate with

activists and artists to facilitate

discussions around gender equality

and inclusion.

The elements we used throughout

the collection are custom artworks

that Features a "Chosen Family“

quote, a common phrase used in the

LGBTQ community referring to the

family one chooses as a support

network.

Chosen families play an important

role in the lives of queer people,

as 39% of queer adults have faced

rejection from their birth families.

Chosen families can fulfill survival

functions as well as emotional

ones; 40% of homeless youth are

LGBTQ, and these families can

sometimes help find someone a place

to stay.

For these people, Chosen Families

are a group of helpful people

providing unconditional support

“Chosen families play an important role in the

SARA

LORUSSO

Last but nor least, for EMEA we have teamed up

with Sara Lorusso.. a Photographer and Visual

Artist based in Milan, Italy.

Since she first approached photography as her

medium for art, Sara has always tried to spread

a message of inclusion and equality.

Her work has appeared in several media outlets

such as Vogue Italy, I.D. Italy, Nomas magazine

and more SKY Arte also released a documentary

called “Fotografe”, where they will be

capturing the lives and work of Italian Women

Photographers. Sara’s is one of those artists to

be featured in the documentary.

And lastly, she’s the co-founder & Editor in chief

of Mulieris Magazine, an independent magazine

based in Milan, that wants to have an open

dialogue on gender equality and inclusion

through art.

Sara’s photos will be printed on our collection

as well as handwritten “Love can save us” or

“kiss” quotes.

Everyone in Kevin Peraza’s family rides BMX. Well, except his mom. Kevin’s dad was a pioneer of BMX back in Sonora,

Mexico, and he’s passed his passion on to Kevin and his three brothers. Papa Peraza’s influence also has a lot to do with

Kevin’s rare hybrid ability to ride street, dirt, and ramp extremely well. In fact, Kevin managed to win an X Games gold

medal in dirt in 2016, follow it up with a gold in park in 2017, and he rounded out 2018 by competing in X Games streetonly

video part competition, Real BMX. While Kevin’s able to ride everything, his style is all his own: a combination of wild

box jump tricks, tweaked 360 variations, technical nose manuals, superman seat grabs, front flips—truly a mixed bag of

tricks with the ever-present Peraza smile. His riding style and skill are only matched by his infectious and gracious

ELIJAH BERLE


BACKGROUND INFO

In F22 one of our great stories is our collab with skater Elijah Berle.

Eli has been on an absolute tear in 2021 – after his part in our video ‘Alright Ok’ and

footage for Fucking Awesome he was in the running for Skater of the Year as well

as landing a Thrasher Cover.

For this season Eli has decided to walk away from his

signature shoe in favour of working on multiple other

stories in Skate Classics. His personal style and absolute

Vans DNA make him the perfect candidate to make some

incredibly subversive and creative Skate Classics and

apparel for this season.

Eli has worked on 3 Skate classics inspired by west

coast motorcycle, surf and tattoo culture which are

perfectly on trend for the throwback graphics and

styles working in skate at the moment. The hero product

of the collab is a Skate Half Cab which is in line with

our support for this growing style and its 30th

anniversary story.

COLLECTION OVERVIEW

We partnered with Elijah Berle to build a collection of Skate Classics that speaks to his

passion for classic tattoo art, motorcycle culture, retro surf, and mid-century fashion.

With embellishments ranging from embroideries, to outsole prints, to removable Velcro

patches, the shoes pay homage to Elijah’s elevated taste level and iconic style.

This half cab khaki sued shoe with black outsole has a barbed wire

embroidery on the heel. This is supported by blacked out old skool

with flames –which we have seen incredible commercial success

on –as well as a barbed wire side stripe and lastly the amazing

Skate SK8-Hi, with the full Velcro quarter and removable art

patches.

Elijah has also worked on Apparel component to

create a full H2T collection. Staying true

himself everything here screams Eli.

Expanding the graphics found on footwear on

fleece, vintage dye tees, vintage style bowling

shirt, embroidered patch accessories and these

incredible 12 oz oxford canvas carpenter pant.

A new section dedicated to our teams.

We will try to add all the new employee and the new roles in our

Hi family!

I'm Michael, new SM of Castel Guelfo

Outlet. I've worked in several brands before

Vans (Prenatal, Levis, Rifle, Skechers) and my

last experience as an SM was with Gamestop.

My entry into Vans was together with an

extraordinary person, Tina from Rome who,

together with the enthusiasm of DM Roxi,

welcomed me warmly. With the great help

of Mirco, the ASM, also new to Vans, we

are doing our best to learn everything and

give the shop a new spark.

Hello people!

I'm Mirco, the new ASM from Vans Castel Guelfo outlet. I

started my journey a month ago and I am happy to have finally

found a company with a strong sense of relationships and

communication between everyone, that I have been

missing a little in past experiences.

I come from a 12 years long working relationship from another

company and I hope to mix what I have learned with everything

there is to discover for an exciting journey with you!

I have to absolutely thank Tina from Via del Corso Roma was here in support who made

my insertion perfect, Rossana, DM, and Elisa,HR, for the warm welcome.

The big day has arrived!

On May 18th, Vans has officially inaugurate our Vans-tastic store in

Milan city centre.

In the store, the customer has the chance to embrace the real brand experience,

full of creativity, style and a huge skate pool in the middle of the store.

Just a few steps from

the store.

Milan Cathedral, the “Duomo” is:

• The most ancient gothic church in the

world;

• On the facade, you can find the first

real Statue of liberty, built in the 1810

• It has more than 3500 statues on it.

Ciao FAMILY!

A new amazing store has been opened as of May 18 th in the heart of Milan!

I could start talking about how the store looks, which is really amazing by the way, but this new store

opening really means a lot to me and to all of us, considering the tough period we’ve been walking

through in the last couple of years.

VANS OREFICI means a new step forward for our EMEA family and our local community as well .

It’s like starting a new chapter of our journey after all the challenges we faced together, by

adapting our habits and behaviors to make both our customers and staff members experience

remarkable, no matter the storm we had to walk through …and let me take the chance to say that I

can’t never stop being so grateful for your great deal of work done and your resilience over these

years!

So, as I was mentioning, Orefici means more than a new store opening to me. It’s the best way to

host our community by expressing our values, creativity and, more than ever, having an

inclusive place where everybody can express their true self, finding out our brand foundation

and enhancing, once again, the crucial role of our physical stores all over the world.

It's so exciting to be part of this journey and I hope to have the chance to share my positive vibes with

you in person, sooner or later

Ciao Family! You all right?

It was a while ago last time that Yvonne asked me to write something for the Vans Mag. When couple

of weeks ago she came to me asking it again…how could I refrain from accepting??


Every time, regardless of when it is (and couple of times I even

went there the day before the Super Thursday in the outlets and

once right after the black Friday!!!), they are just incredible. The

energy and the atmosphere you breath in the stores is

unbelievable. Every single person is super committed. Every

single person row in the same direction to elevate the brand and

offer the best customer experience.

Doesn’t matter when or who goes to these store, an

amazing experience is always granted!

So, please allow me to say thank you to Marta, Cristina, Paula,

Nerea, Maryna and Marc and all their teams. YOU guys really

rock, and this is what makes me feel proud of doing the job I do!!

I also want to extend my congratulations to Telmo, for leading

such a district.

For everyone else, reading this letter…please make sure you pass

by the stores if you are planning to visit to Barcelona or Madrid.

I don’t have a template for these pages, because it’s a beautiful surprise also for me,

a big present from london, from our team of

Vans covent garden boutique!

Let’s discover it together!

Here in the Vans Covent Garden Boutique we have some of the crème de la

crème of vans footwear and apparel that can only be found in 6 other Vans

stores in the world.

We the team have been challenged with creating a look that they feel

expresses their individuality using a core item from the knew Alex Knost and

Lee Ann Curren collection currently in all retail stores across the globe.

The collection is designed with progression and inclusivity at the forefront

and every single item is intended to be completely genderless making it a

collection accessible for everyone regardless of gender or sexual

orientation.

MANDATORY:

As a team we chose to use the

OVERSIZED KNOST ORANGE SWEATSHIRT.

Let’s meet the team and see what the collection means to them!

This is Konstantinos, he has been with Vans for almost three years

now and is also studying psychology at the university of West London.

He matched the Knost Sweatshirt with the reversable bucket and chose

the leopard print side. “I chose the leopard print bucket hat as it’s not

something you traditionally would see a man wearing in my home

country Greece, I want to show myself and customers that men can

wear anything they want too and feel comfortable regardless of

gender”.

Kosta is wearing the relaxed authentic chino in Demitasse

(VN0A5FJ93N1) with the orange socks from the celadon green 3

pack of crew (VN000XTTYSJ). He also has on the style 36 Alex

Knost shoes (VN0A5HYRB97), Kosta said they are his favorite pair

of Vans he owns. The only exception to his head to toe Vans look is

his reworked vintage shirt from BDG jeans.

I asked Kosta what fashion means to him and he answered:

“Fashion to me is self expression,

it’s how I want the world to see

me, sometimes I notice strange

looks from people on the

underground and I reply to them

with a smile.”

Meet Emma, the woman who runs the show here in Covent Garden.

Emma is the store manager and has been for just over a year now. Emma is

pictured wearing the SK8-Hi reissue positive vibes (VN0A5EE3AZB1) that are

fresh from the Vault collection and of course the grey socks from the classic

crew colours (VN0A49ZFYRT).

Emma is often in the brightest and most joyful with clothes in store.

I asked Emma what fashion means to her and this is what she said:

“Fashion to me is everything, it’s life. I love that Vans allows me to be my

true self. I can express my emotions and how I feel on just by the colour I

put on in the morning. I have worked for multiple companies and none have

ever let me express my individuality the way Vans have. Coming to work in

Covent Garden every day is so joyful because everyone here dresses

uniquely, not just the team in store but the customers too. Everyone is

unique in their own way. I wish that could happen everywhere and not just

London.”

This is Moses, he is relatively new to Vans, he has only been in

Covent Garden for three months and is loving every second of it.

Not only does Moses work for Vans but he is also a part time model

and co owns his own social media management business. Moses says

he takes fashion inspiration from people like Rick James, Tyler the

Creator and Prince, but not only this he also has a strong love for

Japanese street fashion. Moses says “the baggier the better”

when it comes to his clothes.

“The fashion industry can be very sizeist when it comes to modelling

and I want to break down those unobtainable beauty standards that

the media constantly push upon us”.

Here Moses is pictured wearing the authentic chino in corduroy in the

relaxed fit(VN0A5FK3YEH) and of course the OG Style 36 LX in

leather blue and true white(VN0A4BVE21B1). “I like to keep things

simple, I have about 20 pairs of differently branded white shoes.

There’s something about a white trainer that just does it for me.”


This is Dexter, he’s been working for Vans for three years in

November and Covent Garden is now the third Vans store he’s worked

in. He one day hopes to be travelling the world with Vans as part of the

Marketing team. Dexter kept it simple and is pictured here wearing the

Alex Knost loose cropped chinos (VN0A7S58BLK1) with the women’s

white such a trip tee(VN0A7TK6WHT) and a platform old skool in

white(VN0A5FK3YEH).

Dexter identifies as non-binary and is often in a mix of

men’s and women’s clothes. Dexter said “I hate that most

if not all retailers’ separate clothes by gender, society is so

obsessed with labels and I see a future where labels that

separate us will no longer exist.

I shop in the women’s section not only because I feel

comfortable in the clothes but because I want to inspire

more people to do the same and feel comfortable in their

own skin. I’m from a small town in Essex where wearing a

dress isn’t socially acceptable but since moving to London I

seize every opportunity I get to dress as my true authentic

self.“

I started working on it directly on the Vans Magazine, without reading it before, and ... I’m

amazed!

The photos, the styles and, over all your words and contents: everything is so beautiful

and inspiring.

You highlighted many complex themes, like beauy standards, gender definition, creative and

slef expression in a such «natural» way that can hit every single reader of this mag.

From the beginning, our purpose was to raise your voices, to give to the chance to have a

free space where express yourself, share your ideas, results and story... And you embraced

everything in a unique way.

I’m speachless and so PROUD of you all... So just a huge thank you for your effort and

beatiful job!
