ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Jen and this is a little bit about myself. First, I must say this project was a lot of fun.
Like a book from my gradeschool years lol. I don’t know if children today still do book reports, but when
I was in school, they were required and boy did I dread reading the assigned books then having to
summarize them! I loved reading books that interested me and hopefully this will interest you. I created
it for anyone that needs help with identification. For the novice glass collectors that buy animal covered
dishes because they fall in love with the way they look or the type of animals they are, or simply for
their colors. For the avid collectors who enjoy buying a few of each animal regardless of the maker. For
the veteran collectors who may have hundreds of glass dishes who never cease to amaze me with their
beautiful collections. For the people that have inherited or purchased someone’s entire collection or
part of a collection and need help to identify things. For the people like me that are meticulous about
every detail needing to label things and just absolutely need to know the whats, whens, whos, hows and
whys of the animal dishes they own. For me, what started with one Asian yellow stained glass bunny on
a nest, has flourished into a full blown collection of hundreds of mixed and matched animal covered
“candy” dishes of all glass types and colors. No particular glass maker, just everything I can’t live
without. LOL. Anyone that knows me would tell you that I stop at nothing, studying book after book
searching for answers about my own glass animals until I find them. I have never been satisfied with a
mystery….unless it involves me watching Columbo, my lifelong favorite television program! I am a
mystery solver... a true detective. I get this from my Mother Cindy. I need to get to the bottom of a piece
of unidentified glass. It drives me bananas not to know everything I can about each piece that I own.
Next, I will tell you that the monetary value of my glassware means nothing to me. I collect it because I
love it. However, unique and rare is always a find! Sure, like every collector, I love a bargain and have
had to pass up many pieces that I could not afford. Ooooh the ones that got away. They haunt me. I can
assure you that when I get a new addition to my collection, it has found its forever home. Someone
before me and usually possibly before them owned these animal covered dishes making a kind of history
that I can only imagine in my mind, its importance to each person. There is a reason behind every single
glassware in every single dwelling. Glass symbolizes many things. It is proudly displayed. It is important
to the person who owns it. I enjoy seeing the happiness glassware brings to people, especially these
animal covered dishes. Who doesn’t love animals? I also enjoy seeing my collection knowing these
pieces of history live on and hope that when I am long gone, they will be in other homes. My glass
brings me peace; most peaceful in the evenings when the cabinet lights are on and the glass does its
natural thing; what it was intended to do since the day it was made...look pretty! To me, it is reminiscent
of having a year round Christmas Tree. Glass is AMAZING! I am a country girl through and through. I
love all things nature. I am an avid bird watcher and an all around animal lover. I live in the beautiful
state of Kentucky with my husband and our two dogs, Monkey and Johnnie, who by the way, is named
after my all time favorite singer, Johnny Cash.

SUMMIT ART GLASS company
Summit Art Glass Company was owned and operated by Russell "Russ"
Vogelsong and his wife Joann. Originally, Summit Art Glass Company
began in 1972 in Mogadore, Ohio. Between 1972-1984, Vogelsong
contracted his glass molds to be poured by Mosser Glass Company. The
Vogelsongs sold glass from a show room in their home. It was from here
they sold their limited series of Clown Elephants, Melanie Dolls, Oscar
the Lion paperweights and Little Women. Russ ordered the molds
destroyed after each series was complete. In 1984, Russ and Joann built
their own glass factory and gift shop in Rootstown, Ohio, close to
Ravenna. On August 25-26 of 1984, a grand opening was held. They
offered glass tours throughout the years. The McConnell family was
employed there to produce all glassware from open salts to animal
covered dishes. Also in 1984, Vogelsong began using the logo 'V' in a ring
on their animal covered dishes which included covered: Dolphin, Robin,
Pony, Owl, Camel, Duck, Turtle, Rabbits in small and large, and Rabbit
Minis. Cat on Hamper, Rooster, Hens in small and large, Chick on Egg
pile, 3.5" Hen on Sleigh, Hen on Double Handled Basket and Chick salts
were also produced by Summit Art Glass Company. I am not covering the
Chickens but have listed them. It is important to know about all animal
covered dishes produced by Summit Art Glass. Russell Carl Vogelsong
Sr. born on February 20, 1943 and passed away on September 12, 2005,
at the age of 62. Summit Art Glass went defunct in 2005.
cat on hamper covered dish
Summit Art Glass Cat on Hamper Covered Dish is a reproduction of the
original Greentown 7 oz. Basket and Cover ca. 1898. Russ Vogelsong had
a mold created in likeness of the original mold and produced the Cat on
Hamper from 1982-2005. The Cat on Hamper was not marked between
1982-1985. Because most color varieties were produced during these 3
years, many lack Vogelsong's 'V' in a ring logo. There are easy ways to
identify Summit from the original Cat on Hamper. Summit Cat heads are
on mounded lids and Greentown Cat heads are on flat lids. Summit
bricks end at the edges of the dish and Greentown bricks wrap around
the edges. Summit Cat is marked on bottom of base. Marked 'V' in a ring.
May be unmarked. 4 7/8" high.
summit art glass no. 574 covered dolphin
Summit Art Glass No. 574 Covered Dolphin was produced between 1979-2005.
Russel Vogelsong purchased the mold from Joe St. Clair in 1978. From 1979-
1984, Vogelsong commissioned Mosser Glass Inc. to pour glass into his Dolphin
Molds. In 1984, Russ and wife Joann had their own glass factory built and as of
August 1984, Summit Art Glass Co. produced their own Covered Dolphins. By
1985, they began marking their animal covered dishes with 'V' inside a ring.
Summit Dolphins are identical to St. Clair/Joe St. Clair Dolphins: both have 19
total teeth, deep body cavities and smooth lids (undersides). Occasionally,
Summit will have rough lids. Unmarked Summits in similarly made St.
Clair/Joe St. Clair colors are difficult to ID. The broad variety of Summit Art
Glass colors can be helpful. Also helpful, Summit Dolphins were produced in
both sawtooth rim and beaded rim (a small row of tiny beads line the Dolphins'
mouths). Beaded Rims were made later on. St. Clair/Joe St. Clair did not make
beaded rim Dolphins dolphins. Summit Art Glass animal covered dishes are
still being sold online at the time I'm doing this book. Dealers of Summit Art
Glass still exist. These pieces are described as "New" Old Stock. They are
poured by Mosser Glass, Inc. It is not known if the original molds were sold to
new glass companies or are being commissioned by the original owner's
family. May be marked 'V' inside a ring. May be unmarked. 7 1/2" long.
summit art glass no. 594 duck covered dish
Summit Art Glass Duck Covered Dish was AT FIRST a reproduction of the Tiffin
Duck on Wavy Base. Russ Vogelsong acquired the original Duncan Miller Duck
mold from Tiffin Glass Company in 1980. Vogelsong began producing the Duck
in 1984. He also added his 'V' in a ring logo to the mold. These early ducks had
extremely coarse lid rims (edges of the lids and tails were rough). They also
had Yellow Glass eyes with dark pupils. Bases marked 'V' in a ring. The repair
mark previously in Tiffin's Duck mold is almost non existent (I can see the lines
under the Summit Duck tail with a magnifying glass). SECONDLY, Russ
Vogelsong acquired the Westmoreland Oval Duck on Wavy Base mold in 1985.
He did not remove the WESTMORELAND III logo from the base and began to
produce this Duck as was. Unfortunately, he did not add a 'V' in a ring to these
Ducks. This makes identification difficult. Sellers often consider these to be
authentic Westmoreland Ducks. They are not.
Note: Authentic Westmoreland Ducks on Wavy
Bases have the old W over G logo, not the
WESTMORELAND III logo. To make things more
confusing, Rosso Wholesale also acquired the
Westmoreland Duck mold. Rosso's Ducks have
the original W over G mark along with 'R' in a
keystone. Later made Summit Art Glass Ducks
have faintly stippled to barely stippled lid rims/
edges with Yellow or Brown glass eyes. 8" long.
SUMMIT art glass no. 0-1 owl covered jar
Summit Art Glass No. 0-1 Owl Covered Jar is a reproduction of the
Imperial #800 Owl Jar and Cover ca. 1955-1976. Russ Vogelsong, owner
of Summit Art Glass, produced the Owl between 1984-2005. Russ
acquired the Owl mold from Lenox / Imperial Glass in 1984. He did not
remove the ALIG (Arthur Lorch Imperial Glass logo from the bottom of
the base). He did not add his Summit Art Glass logo, 'V' in a ring to the
Owl. Summit Owls were produced in many colors including carnival and
have either Yellow or Brown glass eyes with Black pupils. The pupils are
off center causing the Owls to look unnatural. The eyes appear to be
crooked, but this is not so. The pupils cause this illusion. Note that
authentic Imperial Owls are marked IG. Summit Owls are marked ALIG.
Some collectors refer to this logo as being a fictitious AIG that was
created by Russ Vogelsong, but if you look closely, you will see an L. ALIG
was the last logo that Imperial used between 1981-1983. 6 1/2" high.
SUMmit art glass no. 570 covered pony
Summit Art Glass No. 570 Covered Pony was produced between 1980-
2005. Russell Vogelsong purchased the mold from Joe St. Clair in 1978. The
first Summit Art Glass advertisement to show the Pony was in the 1980
Glass Review magazine that read: Summit Art Glass 5 1/2" Covered Pony,
originally made at Greentown, IN. Did this mean the Summit Pony was a
true copy of the original Mckee Pony? In Vogelsong's 2005 letter to his
glass dealers, he described how he purchased the Pony mold from Joe St.
Clair who had purchased the Pony mold from people surnamed Ferguson
who acquired the original Pony mold from McKee Glass Company in the
1930's. Russ mentioned the Fergusons had Ponies produced in Indiana
between 1930's-1940's. Early Summit Ponies between 1980-'84/'85 were
not marked and were poured by Mosser Glass. After 1984-'85, Russ
Vogelsong began to produce them at his own glass factory. He then placed
the 'V' in a ring for Vogelsong inside lids and bases. Be aware that some
later versions were also unmarked. Perhaps these Ponies had foil hand
stamp stickers that fell off. Lid rims may be smooth or stippled. Rays on
bottom of base meet in the center. Center may look a bit mushy. Do not
confuse this mushy look for Kemple Ponies with a thumbprint sized area
of stippling. Most Kemple base rays do not meet in the center. Summit
Pony bases and lids are interchangeable with other 5 1/2" Ponies.
Marriages can occur. May be hand stamped. May or may not be marked.
5 1/2" long.
Summit Art Glass produced low number of Ponies marked McKEE.
SEE SUMMIT, MCKEE LOGO
It is difficult to tell the difference between unmarked Summit Ponies
and unmarked Joe St. Clair Ponies in Cobalt Carnival or Chocolate
because they were poured from the same mold. See St. Clair/Joe St.
Clair Pony for a complete color list.
1989: Vogelsong poured this Pony dish for NMGGCS in White milk glass
as their commemorative club piece. Vogelsong owned the mold. Club
Ponies are marked with the NMGCS club logo and '89 IL.
2005: Summit Art Glass Ponies were sold to Rosso Wholesale Co. in
Amethyst Carnival. Rosso advertised the Pony dish as Royal Plum
Carnival. These were produced by Summit Art Glass but sold by Rosso.
Unlike other 5" animal covered dishes which Rosso owned, Summit Art
Glass owned this mold and because Rosso did not own the Pony mold,
these are still considered Summit items. The mold may have gone to
Rosso upon Vogelsong's death in 2005 because air brushed Ponies have
Rosso logos.
Rosso Wholesale logos ('R' in a keystone) have been found on air
brushed/painted Pony Covered Dishes atop split ribbed bases. These
were poured by Summit Art Glass in White and decorated at Rosso.
Split ribbed bases were not typical for Rosso.
Summit art glass no. 570 covered pony
I have found that of all animal covered dishes, the unmarked, White, milk
glass Ponies are the most difficult to identify. When beside one another, it
becomes easier to tell them apart by maker...but not much easier.
White milk glass Ponies by Mckee Glass Company ca. 1890 have the
thinnest lids of all covered Pony dishes. They have the clearest, finest
details which show each and every strand of hair on manes and tails.
Mckee's base has rays that meet at the bottom center of the dish. None
of the McKee Ponies are stippled inside. Collectors have stated McKee
Glass Co. bases are more flared out at the top. Lid rims are a bit wider
than Summit Art Glass, but not as wide as Kemple. Many McKee Horses
are unsigned/unmarked.
White milk glass Ponies by Summit Art Glass ca. 1980 were said by Russ
Vogelsong to have been produced from the same mold as original
1890's Mckee Glass Co. They are similar, but not identical. Overuse of
the molds have diminished the clarity of fine details. Summit's base has
rays that meet at the bottom center of the dish. White milk glass
Summit Ponies were produced before Vogelsong placed his logo, a V
inside a ring, on his ACDs. Unsigned/unmarked.
All color was removed from photos below for illustration purposes
Note the gap differences under the necks. Older made ACDs may have drooping
in areas or slight differences due to the individual glassmakers' actions.
Summit art glass no. 570 covered pony
White milk glass Ponies by John Kemple Glass are a bit easier to ID.
Kemple Ponies have thick lids which sit higher atop bases than Mckee
Glass Co. or Summit Art Glass. Insides of lids and bases are most likely,
but not always, stippled like orange peels. Lid rims are very wide and
flat. Kemple bases, like original Mckee Glass Co. bases, are flared at the
top. Kemple's base rays do not meet at the bottom center of the dish.
There is an oblong unmarked, possibly stippled area where the rays do
not come together, commonly called the thumbprint area. Kemple
Ponies were labeled with John E. Kemple stickers placed across the
tops of the dishes. If this label is missing, the Pony is unmarked.
Denise Brouillette
McKee Glass Company Summit Art Glass John E. Kemple
When three unmarked milk glass Ponies are side by side, you can see how Kemple's
thicker lid sits up higher on the base. You can also see the flare at the tops of two
bases. I personally observe all mane shapes are different, all jaw shapes are different
and that Kemple Ponies have the smallest gaps between chin and neck area.
I DO NOT BELIEVE SUMMIT PONIES WERE MADE WITH ORIGINAL MCKEE MOLD(S).
To add more confusion, there were Summit Ponies decorated at Rosso
Wholesale Co. Rosso has an airbrushing department where workers apply
colors to their glass animal covered dishes. Rosso purchased Pony dishes on
split ribbed bases in white milk glass from Summit Art Glass and decorated
them to resell for themselves. Some are marked with Rosso's logo, others
are unmarked. When I called to speak with the owner of Rosso Wholesale,
she told me they owned the horse on wide ribbed base mold.
She said they also own the Cow on wide ribbed
base mold. I have only ever seen one Cow in White!
SUMMIT ART GLASS NO. 548 MINI COVERED rABBIT
Summit Art Glass Mini Covered Rabbit or commonly known as "Rabbit Salt"
was produced between 1980-2005. Russ Vogelsong described in his newsletter
how he created this from a solid silver Rabbit covered salt dish that was
brought back to U.S from Europe in 1910 and had been in his family for more
than 60 years. He went on to tell that "It is faithfully reproduced in glass for
your pleasure. Made in several collector's colors. You will find few people able
to resist the desire to own one." The Summit glass Mini has linear grass texture
on the lid while the Asian reproduction does not. Also, the Summit Mini has a
round belly which presents full hips. Summit Minis also have 2 full ears while
the repro's ears merge together as one. Summit Mini bases look similar to
Boyd's Crystal Art Glass bases but Summit does not flare outward like Boyd.
And of course, Boyds are marked. Early production Summit Minis marked 'V' in
a ring in the base. Later Minis unmarked. 2 1/2" long x 2 1/4" high.
Reproduced by A.A. Importing Company 1996-present (time of writing this book).
Mini Covered Rabbit mold was sold to Kim George in 2006. I spoke to Kim
often seen in early colors, making those colors even more collectible.
In the Mihaly's collection of Rabbit minis, we observe some with colored
lids on crystal bases. These came this way; these are NOT marriages. Tom
and Lynda did business for Russ Vogelsong, owner of Summit Art Glass and
periodically, Russ brought glass items to them which he produced at his
factory. They also picked up Summit items during tours at the factory.
Summit art glass no. 590 covered rabbit
Russell Vogelsong produced Summit Art Glass No. 590 Covered Rabbits
between 1979-2004. There were no Rabbits shown in the 2005 newsletter
from Russ Vogelsong to his glass dealers, so this meant he was done
making Rabbits by 2005. Mr. Vogelsong passed away in 2005. The 1979
Glass Review ad stated the Summit Rabbit was from a new mold, not
from an original Greentown mold. Russ Vogelsong had his own Rabbit
mold made. Summit Rabbits sit atop split ribbed bases. The rays on the
bottom of the base meet at the center. Some of his Rabbit lids were
stippled and rough, others were not. Summit made both "skinny" and
"fat" Rabbits like Greentown did. Summit's skinny versions were on
textured dome lids while fat versions were on smooth dome lids. Rabbit
lids or bases may be marked 'V' inside a ring. Both pieces may be
marked. Some Rabbits are unmarked. Vogelsong didn't begin regularly
marking his animal covered dishes until 1984-'85. 5 1/2" long.
Quick ID tip: There are several other Rabbits that look similar to
Summit Art Glass Rabbits. If you have an unmarked Rabbit in
Chocolate Milk Glass on a split ribbed base, it is probably by Summit.
Note that St. Clair did not produce any Rabbits. Kemple did not
produce Chocolate Rabbits. Wheaton did not produce Chocolate
Rabbits and Westmoreland did not produce Chocolate Rabbits
(Westmoreland Rabbits are on wide ribbed bases). Rosso Wholesale
DID sell Chocolate Rabbits but are atop wide ribbed bases and
marked WESTMORELAND III. McKee Glass Company and Greentown
Rabbits were altogether different.
Imperial's 1950/155 Rabbit-On-Nest. Russ Vogelsong, owner of Summit Art
Glass, produced the rabbit between 1984-2005. Russ acquired the Rabbit
mold from Lenox / Imperial Glass in 1984. He did not remove the Atterbury
Patent Date or the Imperial logo from the mold. He did not add his Summit
Art Glass logo, 'V' in a ring . Summit Rabbits were produced in many colors
including carnival. The eyes are molded. White milk glass Summit Rabbits
may have Red painted eyes. If so, the entire eye will be painted. Imperial
Rabbits have Pink glass eyes. The White Summit Rabbits with unpainted
eyes are difficult to tell apart from recent Rosso Rabbits. Summit and
Rosso Rabbits in White with unpainted eyes are nearly identical. Summit
Rabbits may have better fur details and have rough/stippled lid rims. Both
Summit and Rosso bases are marked PATD MARCH 9-1886 and L I G. The L
is very faint and located at the lower left of IG. Bottoms of both bases are
rough/stippled. 9.5" long.
Although Summit Art Glass produced limited edition animal covered
dishes marked McKee, this style of Rabbit was NOT one of them.
Rosso Wholesale currently sells this Rabbit in White milk glass and air
brushed colors. Poured by Mosser and decorated at Rosso. Rosso is
known for their air brushed decorations. White Rosso Rabbits have
molded eyes that may be painted Blue, Red or Black. The paint is only
applied to the center of the eye, not the entire eye. Some eyes are
unpainted. This makes it difficult to recognize the difference between
Summit and Rosso Rabbits. Like Summit, Rosso Rabbits are also
marked PATD MARCH 6-1886 and L I G. The L is to the lower left of the
IG. The L is very faint (even more faint than on the Summit Rabbits).
Rosso's 'R' in keystone is not on the rabbit. Amazon's website
currently sells Rosso Rabbits. Though Rosso is having these
reproduced, it is not known who currently owns the Rabbit mold. It is
most likely being stored at Mosser Glass Company.
summit art glass no. 57 covered robin dish
Summit Art Glass Covered Robin Dish is a reproduction of the 1960's St.
Clair Robin on Nest. St. Clair acquired the original Greentown Bird with
Berry lid mold but not the diamond weave base mold. St. Clair had a base
created for the Robin lid. It was a vertical split ribbed mold created to look
the McKee bases. Meaning it shows two circles of rays on the bottom, with
the smaller rays meeting in the center. Summit purchased the entire St.
Clair mold in 1978. Summit produced the Covered Robin Dish between
1982-2002. Summit Robins have very good feather details, and the berry is
rough. Some refer to it as being able to see the berry's seeds. The inside rim
of the lid is normally smooth, but some have been seen stippled (rough like
sandpaper). Summit Robins have also been seen atop numbered diamond
weave bases. These were factory marriages. Colors seen: Chocolate, White
Milk Glass and dark Amber, almost Red. It is not known who got the mold
when Summit closed in 2005. It is believed that they are being stored at
Mosser Glass, Inc. Inside the base is marked with the Summit logo, a letter
'V' inside a ring. Lid may also be marked with 'V' inside ring. Robins before
1985 may be unmarked. 5 1/2" long.
Degenhart made the Robin dish 1960-1978, but the berry is smooth, and
the feather details are not as crisp and clear as Summit Art Glass.
Degenhart had a Robin mold made by Island Mould and Machine
Company of Wheeling, WV. Some Degenhart Robins are unmarked, so
pay close attention to the berry.
St. Clair / Joe St. Clair produced a Robin dish 1967-1977. This was the
mold that Vogelsong acquired.
Boyds Art Glass Company made a Robin dish 1978-2007 using the
Degenhart mold. The berry is smooth. Base is marked with the 'B' in a
diamond with line(s) according to the year produced. 5 1/2" long.
1990: Vogelsong poured this Robin dish for NMGCS in Cobalt Blue Slag
as their commemorative club piece. Vogelsong owned the mold. Club
Robin is marked with the NMGCS logo and '90 PA.
Slag for the National Milk Glass Collector's Society (NMGCS) for their
commemorative club piece. Bird mold was owned by Russell Vogelsong.
Lid Marked 'V' in a ring. Base marked with club logo, NMGCS and PA 90 for
Pennsylvania, the location of their convention in 1990.
At the same time, Vogelsong poured a separate order for a different
customer in this same color in limited quantities marked "McKEE".
summit art glass no. 1000 covered turtle
Summit Art Glass Covered Turtle Dish was produced from the mid to late
1980's-2005. Russ Vogelsong acquired the original Westmoreland mold. He
did NOT reproduce the small, lidless Westmoreland Turtles. Because he did
not add his own logo to the Turtle mold, the Turtle is unmarked. 7 1/2" long.
No known reproductions.
Rosso Wholesale Company sold Vaseline and Vaseline Carnival Turtles that
were produced by Summit Art Glass.
The way to tell the difference between Summit Art Glass Turtles and and
Westmoreland Turtles is to learn the colors that were produced by each
company. Mutual colors are White Milk Glass and Vaseline. Westmoreland
placed foil labels on their early made turtles but if the label has fallen off,
it is impossible to tell the difference because they used the same mold.
