ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT<br />
The Honorable<br />
James M. Shuler<br />
James M. Shuler, D.V.M., is a recipient of the <strong>2010</strong> Alumni Distinguished Service<br />
Award in recognition of his outstanding service and support to the university and<br />
the Alumni Association.<br />
A native of Rockingham County, <strong>Virginia</strong>, he is a member of the <strong>Virginia</strong> General<br />
Assembly, representing the 12th District, and was the founder and operator of<br />
Blacksburg’s Companion Animal Clinic. He is now retired from his practice.<br />
A noted veterinarian, community leader and businessman, Delegate Shuler<br />
has been a strong voice for agriculture, the profession of veterinary medicine, and<br />
the veterinary college. He has been a member, advocate and leader for many<br />
professional veterinary organizations including the American Animal Hospital<br />
Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He served on the<br />
Board of Directors of the <strong>Virginia</strong> Veterinary Medical Association and as President<br />
of the Southwest <strong>Virginia</strong> Veterinary Association.<br />
Delegate Shuler has worked with numerous business and professional<br />
organizations, including service as a member of the board of the National Bank<br />
of Blacksburg and the Community Foundation of the New River Valley. He was<br />
inducted into the <strong>Virginia</strong>-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine’s<br />
John Dalton Society, and has served on the Regional Campaign Committee and<br />
the Veterinary Medicine Citizens Committee.<br />
Delegate Shuler graduated from <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> with a bachelor’s degree in<br />
animal science in 1966, and received his doctorate of veterinary medicine in<br />
1970 from the University of Georgia.<br />
ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT<br />
E. Ann Spencer is a recipient of the <strong>2010</strong> Alumni Distinguished Service<br />
Award, in recognition of her outstanding service to the university and the Alumni<br />
Association.<br />
Ms. Spencer, of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is the Associate Vice President<br />
Emerita for Personnel and Administrative Services at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>, where she<br />
reorganized personnel services around customer service modules, introduced<br />
an employee wellness program, and was responsible for the installation of the<br />
first comprehensive human resource system. Following her retirement, she<br />
worked as an independent consultant for higher education and its supporting<br />
associations.<br />
Maintaining a strong commitment to <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>, Ms. Spencer is past<br />
president of the <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Alumni Association, and is a member of the R.B.<br />
Pamplin College of Business Advisory Council, the Women in Leadership and<br />
Philanthropy Council, and the Ut Prosim Society, and she serves as president<br />
of the Greater Yellowstone Region Alumni Club.<br />
She has served on the <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Foundation Board, on the MBA Alumni<br />
Advisory Board, in various advisor roles to Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, and on the<br />
Panhellenic Council.<br />
Ms. Spencer was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumna Award in<br />
E. Ann Spencer<br />
1984 and was the eighth recipient and first woman to receive the Distinguished<br />
Alumnus Award from the Pamplin College of Business in 1997.<br />
Ms. Spencer graduated from <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1976 and received her<br />
master's degree in business administration from the university in 1984.<br />
