RECENT MATCH REPORTSFOR OUR OPEN AGE TEAMSHEWORTH 38 WOOLSTON ROVERS 4(NCL 14/05/2022)Woolston Rovers came back from York empty handed when a clinical performance from Heworthsaw them claim a richly deserved victory in the NCL Division Two on Saturday afternoon.Heworth opened the scoring in the fourth minute when winger Jay O’Gilvie scored and then sevenminutes later centre George Elliott went over for a try that he converted himself and almost immediatelywinger Billy Sturdy added a third try to cement the home sides early supremacy.Rovers managed to stem the tide a little with some gritty defending but then right on the stroke ofhalf time Heworth stand off Danny Allan scored a try. Elliott converted to give his side a commanding20-0 interval lead.Six minutes into the second half Heworth increased their advantage when substitute Ben Barnardscored. Elliott converted and five minutes later prop forward Liam Richmond crashed over for atry. Elliott added the conversion.Rovers non-stop effort was rewarded on the hour when substitute Jake Toher marked his firstgame for the club with a try but then with ten minutes remaining Heworth substitute Jack Earl wentover for a touchdown. White added the conversion.Rovers got back into the game just after the midway point of the half when a strong drive fromprop forward Lewis Dawson put Rovers withing five metres of the Simms Cross line and hookerDec Houghton found full back James Tarpey linking into the line and he shot through a gap toscore on the right and then four minutes later a superb long ball from scrum half Dec Leonard sentcentre Kieran Jones away and he raced forty metres outpacing the chasing cover to score underthe posts. Stand off Craig Lawton added the conversion to level matters and then added a penaltyright on the stroke of half time to give Rovers a 12-10 interval advantage.The kick off at the start of the second half by Rovers was dropped into tough by Simmies and fromthe resulting play the ball Lawton found second row Ryan Palin at speed and he ran over threedefenders to score under the posts.
