PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Develop and implement a judicial and legislative educational<br />

program concerning <strong>the</strong> public health risks associated with <strong>the</strong> consumption of illegally<br />

harvested molluscan shellfish and how to avoid, control, or minimize those risks.<br />

TASK 1: ISSC Education Committee develops material for presentation.<br />

Statement of Product: Educational material may consist of video and/or<br />

printed material that outlines recent cases of illnesses that resulted from<br />

consumption of shellfish illegally harvested from closed shellfish growing<br />

waters. Material will also outline all possible illnesses that may be caused by<br />

consumption of illegally harvested shellfish and relate <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> shellfish<br />

program and how shellfish water are classified. The Gulf of Mexico Program<br />

project officer will be informed of <strong>the</strong> type of material to be presented and a<br />

copy will be sent to <strong>the</strong> Gulf Program office.<br />

TASK 2: State Shellfish Sanitation Program personnel will identify a proper time<br />

and date for delivery of material to <strong>the</strong> judiciary and legislators, and<br />

coordinate with <strong>Sea</strong> <strong>Grant</strong> and FDA Shellfish Specialists to arrange<br />

meetings to deliver materials.<br />

Statement of Product: A coordinated calendar that specifies who, what,<br />

when, and where material will be delivered to appropriate Gulf State members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> judiciary and legislators. The events should be timed for maximum<br />

participation by all parties. Copies of each calendar will be sent to <strong>the</strong> GMPO<br />

project officer.<br />

TASK 3: Education materials will be delivered by respective State Shellfish<br />

Sanitation Program personnel, <strong>Sea</strong> <strong>Grant</strong>, and FDA Shellfish Specialists<br />

as indicated in <strong>the</strong> calendar.<br />
