Preproposals will be evaluated and ranked by a process administered by <strong>the</strong> Gulf of<br />

Mexico Program. Those submitting preproposals which are selected for award will<br />

be contacted by <strong>the</strong> Gulf of Mexico Program Office in February 1995, and will be<br />

asked to work with Program staff to develop more complete proposals of <strong>the</strong> work<br />

to be accomplished.<br />

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Develop reference and instructional materials for <strong>the</strong> training<br />

of technical/research and management personnel in handling toxic algal bloom phenomena.<br />

This is an effort to develop a well trained and consistent infrastructure to deal with toxic algal<br />

bloom phenomena in <strong>the</strong> Gulf states.<br />

Type: Independent<br />

Geography: Gulf State region<br />

Statement of Product: A manual and accompanying video covering <strong>the</strong> elements of<br />

how to identify toxic algal blooms, how to identify <strong>the</strong> causative species, strategies for<br />

field sampling and monitoring, determination of toxins in water and seafood, and<br />

management strategies for dealing with exposure to toxins (closure of shellfish areas,<br />

monitoring for fish and o<strong>the</strong>r seafood products, etc.).<br />
