OBJECTIVES<br />

a. Reduce <strong>the</strong> level of human wastes in <strong>the</strong> coastal waters of <strong>the</strong> Gulf<br />

of Mexico.<br />

b. Establish a Gulf Coast Fish Contaminants Group.<br />

c. Encourage states to adopt compatible policies for management of<br />

public health hazards.<br />

d. Standardize methods for marine biotoxin identification and analysis<br />

from phytoplankton producers and seafood vectors.<br />

e. Organize a Gulf-wide marine biotoxins management and consulting<br />

group.<br />

4. PUBLIC OUTREACH (PO)<br />

OBJECTIVES<br />

a. Undertake an educational campaign to<br />

(1) help <strong>the</strong> public understand and control or minimize<br />

potential risks associated with <strong>the</strong> consumption of raw<br />

molluscan shellfish;<br />

(2) help health care professionals understand <strong>the</strong> potential<br />

risks associated with <strong>the</strong> consumption of raw molluscan<br />

shellfish, especially high risk patients, and to transmit<br />

information to <strong>the</strong>se patients and encourage <strong>the</strong> reporting;<br />

(3) help legislative and judicial members understand <strong>the</strong><br />

seriousness of violations of shellfishing regulations related to<br />

public health,<br />

(4) inform enforcement officials about public health aspects of<br />

shellfishing reguIations.<br />

b. Help <strong>the</strong> public understand <strong>the</strong> nutritional/health benefits and <strong>the</strong><br />

potential risks from consumption of seafood, o<strong>the</strong>r than raw
