Among his other many achievements in South America were
Settlement pattern: pattern
THE LOCAL HOUSEHOLD: “The The center of Jívaro J varo life is the individual house,
normally occupied by a polygynous nuclear family and surrounded by a garden
in deep isolation in the forest. The house is typically built beside a small stream stream
on a hillock where there are stands of soft or medium-hard medium hard wood. The location
of the house on high ground is not only better for drainage, but also furnishes a
view across the surrounding garden to facilitate defensive fire in case of enemy
attack.

THE DWELLING AS FORTIFICATION: FORTIFICATION:
The windowless wall is built of stout
chonta palm (Guilielma ( Guilielma sp.) staves set vertically into the ground about an inch apart to to
permit light and air to enter, and to allow the inhabitants to see see
out and to fire at
attackers. ... To protect the inhabitants from enemy attacks, attacks,
the doorways are closed
with strong hand-hewn hand hewn wooden doors or removable wooden posts locked into position
with a crossbar. An extra layer of chonta palm staves is sometimes sometimes
lashed to the house
wall near the beds. If local feuding is at a particularly high pitch, logs may be laid
horizontally against the inside of the house wall to form a breastwork breastwork
about four feet
high. Foxholes are also sometimes dug into the floor to permit firing from low points
on the breastwork and to provide shelter for the women and children. children.
A secret escape
tunnel occasionally extends underneath the wall, coming up in the the
garden.
DWELLING SIZE AND FEASTING/DEFENSIVE FACTORS: FACTORS:
A family averaging
only about nine persons typically occupies these rather large houses. houses.
While to a casual
observer the size of the house might seem excessive in terms of everyday needs, the
large floor space is deemed essential for hosting visitors, who are often guests coming
to drink and dance. Since dancing is never done outdoors, where persons would not be
protected from rain and possible attackers, a large floor area is essential, especially
when a tsantsa feast is given, since large numbers of guest dance and sleep within within
the
house on such occasions.

SPACING OF LOCAL HOUSEHOLDS:
HOUSEHOLDS:
“Each Each house ... is usually isolated a
KILLING EXPEDITIONS: “Jívaro varo killing expeditions usually attack the
As soon as the expedition kills its
SHAMANS (HALLUCINOGENS, TRAINING, AND
“... ... shamans are of two types: bewitchers and curers. . Both kinds take a
THE HIDDEN WORLD: “The The Jívaro J varo believe that the true determinants of
life and death are normally invisible forces which can be seen and and
utilized
only with the aid of hallucinogenic drugs. The normal waking life is explicitly
viewed as ‘false false’ or ‘a a lie’ lie and it is firmly believed that truth about causality is
to be found by entering the supernatural world or what the Jívaro J varo view as the
‘real real’ world, for they feel that the events which take place within it underlie
Thus, within a few days of birth, a baby is given a hallucinogenic
drug to help it enter the ‘real real’ world and hopefully to obtain help in surviving
