<strong>The</strong> acts of aggression committed aga<strong>in</strong>st every aspect of<br />

<strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> life and society over <strong>the</strong> centuries—what <strong>the</strong><br />

Aztecs foresaw as N<strong>in</strong>e Hells or N<strong>in</strong>e Descents—have left<br />

<strong>in</strong>delible, sear<strong>in</strong>g scars on <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ds and spirits of <strong>the</strong> native<br />

peoples on this cont<strong>in</strong>ent. But voices of <strong>the</strong> spirits that <strong>in</strong>form<br />

Native America are be<strong>in</strong>g heard <strong>in</strong> every region.<br />

This section is devoted to a number of studies of traditional<br />

and contemporary <strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> literature. <strong>The</strong> oral tradition,<br />

from which <strong>the</strong> contemporary poetry and fiction take <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

significance and au<strong>the</strong>nticity, has, s<strong>in</strong>ce contact with white<br />

people, been a major force <strong>in</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> resistance. It has kept <strong>the</strong><br />

people conscious of <strong>the</strong>ir tribal identity, <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual<br />

traditions, and <strong>the</strong>ir connection to <strong>the</strong> land and her creatures.<br />

Contemporary poets and writers take <strong>the</strong>ir cue from <strong>the</strong> oral<br />

tradition, to which <strong>the</strong>y return cont<strong>in</strong>uously for <strong>the</strong>me, symbol,<br />

structure, and motivat<strong>in</strong>g impulse as well as for <strong>the</strong> philosophic<br />

bias that animates our work.
