… imag<strong>in</strong>e that <strong>the</strong>y ought by right of birth, to enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />

liberty of wild ass colts, render<strong>in</strong>g no homage to anyone<br />

whomsoever, except when <strong>the</strong>y like. <strong>The</strong>y have reproached<br />

me a hundred times because we fear our Capta<strong>in</strong>s, while<br />

<strong>the</strong>y laugh at and make sport of <strong>the</strong>irs. All <strong>the</strong> authority of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir chief is <strong>in</strong> his tongue’s end, for he is powerful <strong>in</strong>sofar<br />

as he is eloquent; and even if he kills himself talk<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

harangu<strong>in</strong>g, he will not be obeyed unless he pleases <strong>the</strong><br />

Savages. 27<br />

<strong>The</strong> wily Le Jeune did not succeed entirely <strong>in</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>se gentle and humorous people <strong>in</strong>to bastard Europeans, but he<br />

situation and <strong>the</strong> fact that over <strong>the</strong> years <strong>the</strong> Montagnais became<br />

entirely Catholicized.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> rate of assimilation <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g and with <strong>the</strong> national<br />

that of <strong>Indian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, <strong>the</strong> Montagnais will likely be<br />

fully patriarchal before <strong>the</strong> turn of <strong>the</strong> next century.<br />

As this brief survey <strong>in</strong>dicates, <strong>the</strong> shift from gynecentricegalitarian<br />

and ritual-based systems to phallocentric,<br />

hierarchical systems is not accomplished <strong>in</strong> only one dimension.<br />

As Le Jeune understood, <strong>the</strong> assault on <strong>the</strong> system of woman<br />

power requires <strong>the</strong> replac<strong>in</strong>g of a peaceful, nonpunitive,
