is <strong>in</strong>ward fire as <strong>the</strong> heart of heaven, <strong>the</strong> sun, is external fire. <strong>The</strong><br />

Cherokee and <strong>the</strong>ir nor<strong>the</strong>rn cous<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> Iroquois acknowledge<br />

<strong>the</strong> femaleness of both fires: <strong>the</strong> sun is female to <strong>the</strong>m both, as is<br />

<strong>the</strong> earth. Among <strong>the</strong> Keres, Shipap, which is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, is<br />

white, as was <strong>the</strong> isolated house Iyatiku dwelt <strong>in</strong> before she left<br />

<strong>the</strong> mortal plane entirely for Shipap. <strong>The</strong> color of Shipap is<br />

white. <strong>The</strong> Hopi see Spider Woman as Grandmo<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> sun<br />

and as <strong>the</strong> great Medic<strong>in</strong>e Power who sang <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong>to this<br />

fourth world we live <strong>in</strong> now.<br />

<strong>The</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g of universal function<strong>in</strong>g as relationship<br />

between <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner and <strong>the</strong> outer is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> social systems<br />

of those tribal groups that are based on clan systems. It is<br />

reflected <strong>in</strong> ritual systems, as seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> widespread <strong>in</strong>cidence<br />

of legends about <strong>the</strong> Little War Tw<strong>in</strong>s among <strong>the</strong> Pueblos or <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Sacred</strong> Tw<strong>in</strong>s among o<strong>the</strong>r tribes and Nations. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Sacred</strong><br />

Tw<strong>in</strong>s embody <strong>the</strong> power of dual creative forces. <strong>The</strong> potency of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir relationship is as strong as that of <strong>the</strong> negative and positive<br />

charges on magnetic fields. It is on <strong>the</strong>ir complementar<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir relationship that both destructive and creative ritual power<br />

rests.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> western Keres, <strong>the</strong> war capta<strong>in</strong>s are <strong>the</strong> analogues<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Little War Tw<strong>in</strong>s, Ma’sewe and O’yo’yo’we. <strong>The</strong>ir<br />

prototype appears to be those puzzl<strong>in</strong>g tw<strong>in</strong> sisters of <strong>the</strong> Keres<br />

pan<strong>the</strong>on, Uretsete and Naotsete, who were sung <strong>in</strong>to life by<br />

Thought Woman before <strong>the</strong> creation of <strong>the</strong> world. <strong>The</strong>se sisters<br />

appear and reappear <strong>in</strong> Pueblo stories <strong>in</strong> various guises and<br />

various names. One of <strong>the</strong>m, Uretsete, becomes male at some<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation story of <strong>the</strong> Keres. Transformation of this<br />
