Beliefs, attitudes, and laws such as <strong>the</strong>se became part of <strong>the</strong><br />

vision of <strong>American</strong> fem<strong>in</strong>ists and of o<strong>the</strong>r human liberation<br />

movements around <strong>the</strong> world. Yet fem<strong>in</strong>ists too often believe<br />

that no one has ever experienced <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of society that<br />

empowered women and made that empowerment <strong>the</strong> basis of its<br />

rules of civilization. <strong>The</strong> price <strong>the</strong> fem<strong>in</strong>ist community must pay<br />

because it is not aware of <strong>the</strong> recent presence of gynarchical<br />

societies on this cont<strong>in</strong>ent is unnecessary confusion, division,<br />

and much lost time.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Root of Oppression Is Loss of<br />

Memory<br />

An odd th<strong>in</strong>g occurs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ds of <strong>American</strong>s when <strong>Indian</strong><br />

seem that <strong>the</strong> gynocratic tribes of <strong>the</strong> <strong>American</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

provided <strong>the</strong> basis for all <strong>the</strong> dreams of liberation that<br />

characterize <strong>the</strong> modern world.<br />

We as fem<strong>in</strong>ists must be aware of our history on this<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ent. We need to recognize that <strong>the</strong> same forces that<br />

devastated <strong>the</strong> gynarchies of Brita<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>ent also<br />

devastated <strong>the</strong> ancient African civilizations, and we must know<br />

that those same materialistic, antispiritual forces are presently<br />

engaged <strong>in</strong> wip<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> same gynarchical values, along with<br />

<strong>the</strong> peoples who adhere to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America. I am
