Gynocracy <strong>in</strong> Native America<br />

I<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a spirit that pervades everyth<strong>in</strong>g, that is capable of<br />

powerful song and radiant movement, and that moves <strong>in</strong> and out<br />

of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. <strong>The</strong> colors of this spirit are multitud<strong>in</strong>ous, a<br />

glow<strong>in</strong>g, puls<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>in</strong>bow. Old Spider Woman is one name for<br />

this qu<strong>in</strong>tessential spirit, and Serpent Woman is ano<strong>the</strong>r. Corn<br />

Woman is one aspect of her, and Earth Woman is ano<strong>the</strong>r, and<br />

what <strong>the</strong>y toge<strong>the</strong>r have made is called Creation, Earth,<br />

creatures, plants, and light.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> center of all is Woman, and no th<strong>in</strong>g is sacred (cooked,<br />

ripe, as <strong>the</strong> Keres <strong>Indian</strong>s of Laguna Pueblo say it) without her<br />

bless<strong>in</strong>g, her th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

… In <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Tse che nako, Thought Woman f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g, thoughts, and <strong>the</strong> names of all th<strong>in</strong>gs. She<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished also all <strong>the</strong> languages. And <strong>the</strong>n our mo<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

Uretsete and Naotsete said <strong>the</strong>y would make names and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would make thoughts. Thus <strong>the</strong>y said. Thus <strong>the</strong>y did. 1<br />

This spirit, this power of <strong>in</strong>telligence, has many names and<br />

many emblems. She appears on <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forests, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great canyons, on <strong>the</strong> mesas, beneath <strong>the</strong> seas. To her we owe<br />

our very breath, and to her our prayers are sent blown on pollen,<br />

on corn meal, planted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> earth on fea<strong>the</strong>r-sticks, spit onto<br />

<strong>the</strong> water, burned and sent to her on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d. Her variety and<br />

multiplicity testify to her complexity: she is <strong>the</strong> true creatrix for
