certa<strong>in</strong> women as <strong>in</strong>dividuals results from certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

that <strong>the</strong> women are born with and that <strong>the</strong>y demonstrate through<br />

temperament, <strong>in</strong>terest, competence, spirit-direction, and<br />

guidance. Women are by <strong>the</strong> nature of fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e “vibration”<br />

graced with certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ations that make <strong>the</strong>m powerful and<br />

capable <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> ways (all who have this temperament,<br />

ambience, or “vibration” are designated women and all who do<br />

not are not so designated). <strong>The</strong>ir power <strong>in</strong>cludes bear<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

rear<strong>in</strong>g children (but <strong>in</strong> tribal life everyone is <strong>in</strong> some sense<br />

“rais<strong>in</strong>g” <strong>the</strong> children); cook<strong>in</strong>g and similar forms of “woman’s<br />

work”; decision mak<strong>in</strong>g; dream<strong>in</strong>g and vision<strong>in</strong>g; prophesy<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

div<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, heal<strong>in</strong>g, locat<strong>in</strong>g people or th<strong>in</strong>gs; harvest<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

preserv<strong>in</strong>g, prepar<strong>in</strong>g, stor<strong>in</strong>g, or transport<strong>in</strong>g food and heal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

stuffs; produc<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ished articles of cloth<strong>in</strong>g; mak<strong>in</strong>g houses and<br />

lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> proper village arrangement; mak<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g all sorts of technological equipment such as needles,<br />

scrapers, gr<strong>in</strong>ders, blenders, harvesters, diggers, fire makers,<br />

la<strong>the</strong>s, sp<strong>in</strong>dles, looms, knives, spoons, and ladles; locat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and/or allocat<strong>in</strong>g virtually every resource used by <strong>the</strong> people.<br />

Guid<strong>in</strong>g young women through <strong>the</strong> complex duties of<br />

womanhood must have taxed <strong>the</strong> creative, physical, psychic, and<br />

spiritual powers of all <strong>the</strong> women. In addition, <strong>the</strong>y bore<br />

responsibility for preserv<strong>in</strong>g and us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> oral tradition; mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

important tribal decisions about <strong>the</strong> life or death of captives and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r outsiders; and oversee<strong>in</strong>g ritual occasions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g spiritual and physical provisions for ceremonies <strong>in</strong><br />

cultures that devoted as much as two-thirds of <strong>the</strong>ir time to<br />

ritual/ ceremonial pursuits. In short, <strong>the</strong> women did—and<br />

wherever possible still do—everyth<strong>in</strong>g that ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> life<br />

and stability of <strong>the</strong>ir tribal people. It is no wonder that <strong>Indian</strong><br />

people <strong>in</strong> general <strong>in</strong>sist that among <strong>the</strong>m women are considered<br />

sacred. Nor, as perhaps you can see, is this an empty compliment<br />

<strong>in</strong> a society that depends for its life upon <strong>the</strong> sacred.
