lands. One of <strong>the</strong> women, identified as Vera, said: “You know,<br />

for such a long long time our men struggled and struggled, and<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs got worse. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> grandmo<strong>the</strong>rs and mo<strong>the</strong>rs decided<br />

that now we must <strong>in</strong>tervene! Among our people we have a<br />

tradition that <strong>the</strong> women make <strong>the</strong> decisions. Later we can go<br />

back to tak<strong>in</strong>g care of our children.” Ano<strong>the</strong>r woman, Judalon,<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued: “<strong>The</strong> government corrupted our leaders and it took<br />

<strong>the</strong> women to realize it.” <strong>The</strong> third woman, D<strong>in</strong>ah, added,<br />

“<strong>The</strong>y’ve turned our men around <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y want <strong>the</strong>m, so that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have lost <strong>the</strong>ir direction and no longer know where <strong>the</strong>y<br />

should be go<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewer asked <strong>the</strong> women why <strong>the</strong>y sound like <strong>the</strong>y<br />

want to “step back” to tak<strong>in</strong>g care of <strong>the</strong> children when German<br />

women are struggl<strong>in</strong>g to do more than housework and<br />

childrear<strong>in</strong>g. German women “want to be able to participate <strong>in</strong><br />

public decisions,” <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewer said. Judalon expla<strong>in</strong>ed that<br />

Native <strong>American</strong> women have always participated <strong>in</strong> public<br />

decisions.<br />

For example, <strong>in</strong> my mo<strong>the</strong>r’s tribe, <strong>the</strong> Mohawks, <strong>the</strong><br />

women made all <strong>the</strong> decisions. In <strong>the</strong> Longhouse <strong>the</strong> clan<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>rs would ga<strong>the</strong>r and sit on one side. <strong>The</strong> chiefs would<br />

sit on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two sides, <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong><br />

people would sit and <strong>the</strong> current problem would be<br />

discussed. <strong>The</strong> clan mo<strong>the</strong>rs would decide what should<br />

happen, but <strong>the</strong> men would speak for <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> men never<br />

made decisions. It was that way <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe and also <strong>in</strong> a<br />

clan’s household. <strong>The</strong> women were responsible and made<br />

<strong>the</strong> decisions.<br />

Everyth<strong>in</strong>g has changed s<strong>in</strong>ce we’ve had contact with <strong>the</strong><br />

Europeans. First, our leaders were bra<strong>in</strong>washed. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

became va<strong>in</strong> and thought that <strong>the</strong>y alone could decide th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

… Today many <strong>Indian</strong> men behave like European men.
