Let us be gentle<br />

with <strong>the</strong> fiery furnaces<br />

smell<strong>in</strong>g of hay and rum,<br />

gentle with <strong>the</strong> veils of sk<strong>in</strong><br />

that b<strong>in</strong>d us<br />

to <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Let us hold fierce<br />

<strong>the</strong> soft lives of our children,<br />

<strong>the</strong> light is <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong>m<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y are burn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> small beds of straw,<br />

beds of scorched white sheets,<br />

newspaper beds with words<br />

wrapped aga<strong>in</strong>st sk<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> light burns through.<br />

<strong>The</strong> women cross <strong>the</strong>ir hands<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir chests<br />

and lie down to sleep a moment<br />

along dust roads.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> dark, Japanese women<br />

light lanterns<br />

<strong>the</strong> shape of children.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y blow gently<br />

on <strong>the</strong> sides of hills,<br />

<strong>the</strong> roads<br />

illum<strong>in</strong>ated by <strong>the</strong> bodies of children
