try<strong>in</strong>g to articulate <strong>the</strong> balance between despair<strong>in</strong>g reality and<br />

<strong>the</strong> hope that cont<strong>in</strong>ued existence requires, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se l<strong>in</strong>es from<br />

“Transformations”:<br />

Out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light or sitt<strong>in</strong>g alone,<br />

sort<strong>in</strong>g, straighten<strong>in</strong>g tangled ske<strong>in</strong>s<br />

(<strong>the</strong>y’re always ty<strong>in</strong>g lives <strong>in</strong> knots)<br />

I would like to be sleep<strong>in</strong>g. Not<br />

dream<strong>in</strong>g, just blacked out:<br />

no one bump<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>in</strong> my bra<strong>in</strong>—<br />

no tangles, no deaths, just quiet<br />

empty nests, just threads<br />

ly<strong>in</strong>g straight and ordered and still.<br />

Outside <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow I can see<br />

sweet w<strong>in</strong>ter birds<br />

rise up from tall weeds<br />

chatter<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>y fly<br />

<strong>in</strong>to sunrisen sky that holds <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong> light. 12<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation and <strong>the</strong> patterns for cont<strong>in</strong>uance are all<br />

around us, if we will accept <strong>the</strong>m for what <strong>the</strong>y can signify and<br />

use <strong>the</strong>m to lend vitality and form to our life. Certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

long ago that’s what <strong>the</strong>y did, and that’s what <strong>the</strong>y can do now as<br />

well.
