about when one has faced ultimate disaster time and time aga<strong>in</strong><br />

over <strong>the</strong> ages and has emerged stronger and more certa<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

endurance of <strong>the</strong> people, <strong>the</strong> spirits, and <strong>the</strong> land from which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y both arise and which <strong>in</strong>forms both with life.<br />

<strong>The</strong> metaphors that most appeal to <strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> poets are<br />

usually those that comb<strong>in</strong>e elements of tribal tradition with<br />

contemporary experience: thus <strong>the</strong> poetry of Creek poet Joy<br />

Harjo f<strong>in</strong>ds itself entw<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ancient understand<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> moon,<br />

of relationship, of womanhood, and of journey<strong>in</strong>g with city<br />

streets, rodeo grounds, highways, airports, <strong>Indian</strong> bars, and<br />

powwows. From <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> archaic and <strong>the</strong><br />

contemporary <strong>the</strong> facts of her life become articulate, and <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that modern <strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong>s are both <strong>Indian</strong> and <strong>American</strong><br />

becomes very clear, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wry, laconic l<strong>in</strong>es from “3 AM”:<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> albuquerque airport<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d a flight<br />

to old oraibi, third mesa<br />

TWA<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only desk open<br />

bright lights outl<strong>in</strong>e new york,<br />

chicago<br />

and <strong>the</strong> attendant doesn’t know<br />

that third mesa<br />

is a part of <strong>the</strong> center<br />

of <strong>the</strong> world<br />

and who are we<br />

just two <strong>in</strong>dians<br />

at three <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d a way back. 8
