thought I heard <strong>the</strong>m talk<strong>in</strong>g, com<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> walk. She turned<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>, pull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> door shut beh<strong>in</strong>d, vagueness hunch<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

round shoulders, her brown arms rais<strong>in</strong>g to circle her for<br />

warmth. Slowly she sat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearest bright orange chair.<br />

What time is it? (p. 3)<br />

In <strong>the</strong> book, dream, “actual” event, myth, tale, history, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal dialogue are run toge<strong>the</strong>r, mak<strong>in</strong>g it evident that<br />

divisions do not lead to comprehension. <strong>The</strong> structure reflects<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t that particles move <strong>in</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g time and space and that<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals move <strong>in</strong> a mov<strong>in</strong>g field. One passage <strong>in</strong> particular<br />

relates this idea:<br />

All is very still. <strong>The</strong>re is sky lead<strong>in</strong>g everywhere. Or<br />

nowhere. And <strong>the</strong> woman <strong>in</strong> a beige dress is tell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Ephanie she is too meek. That she lets <strong>the</strong>m run over her.<br />

That she must take charge …<br />

Ephanie sat <strong>the</strong> afternoon ponder<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow, its<br />

light. <strong>The</strong> reflection of <strong>the</strong> yellowed tree. Branches stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as if on <strong>the</strong> threshold of awareness. Throw<strong>in</strong>g light at <strong>the</strong><br />

sky. Fall now, w<strong>in</strong>ter soon. Time a float<strong>in</strong>g crap game. (p.<br />

<strong>The</strong> section title that follows this passage, “If She Remembers,<br />

She’ll Know <strong>The</strong> Time,” captures <strong>the</strong> essence of <strong>Indian</strong> time.<br />

Ultimately, <strong>Indian</strong> time is a concept based on a sense of<br />

propriety, on a ritual understand<strong>in</strong>g of order and harmony. For an<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>, if be<strong>in</strong>g on time means be<strong>in</strong>g out of harmony with self<br />

and ritual, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> will be “late.” <strong>The</strong> right tim<strong>in</strong>g for a tribal<br />

<strong>Indian</strong> is <strong>the</strong> time when he or she is <strong>in</strong> balance with <strong>the</strong> flow of<br />

<strong>the</strong> four rivers of life. That is, <strong>Indian</strong> time rests on a perception<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dividuals as part of an entire gestalt <strong>in</strong> which fitt<strong>in</strong>gness is<br />

not a matter of how gear teeth mesh with each o<strong>the</strong>r but ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

how <strong>the</strong> person meshes with <strong>the</strong> revolv<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> seasons, <strong>the</strong><br />

land, and <strong>the</strong> mythic reality that shapes all life <strong>in</strong>to significance.
