scream<strong>in</strong>g and naked<br />

she say she lost<br />

and cant f<strong>in</strong>d her tower<br />

by <strong>the</strong> lake<br />

some people take her away<br />

but not her poetry<br />

i stole it<br />

and she wont miss it where she went 6<br />

Aunt and cous<strong>in</strong>, caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same ambiguity; unable to be<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>, unable not to be <strong>Indian</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y go <strong>the</strong> same route: drunk,<br />

crazy, isolated, hav<strong>in</strong>g no po<strong>in</strong>t of reference that is mean<strong>in</strong>gful to<br />

all <strong>the</strong>ir experience. Nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Indian</strong> nor white can accept all<br />

parts of <strong>the</strong>se unfortunates’ experiences, so <strong>the</strong>y fall <strong>in</strong>to tragedy<br />

along with <strong>the</strong>ir people.<br />

<strong>The</strong> crucial factor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> alienation so often treated <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> unconscious assumption that<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>s must ally with one particular segment of <strong>the</strong>ir experience<br />

and not with ano<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> world is seen <strong>in</strong> terms of antagonistic<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples: good is set aga<strong>in</strong>st bad, <strong>Indian</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st white, and<br />

tradition aga<strong>in</strong>st cultural borrow<strong>in</strong>g; personal significance<br />

becomes lost <strong>in</strong> a confusion of dualities. For many, this process<br />

has meant rejection of <strong>Indian</strong>ness. <strong>The</strong> “apples,” who<br />

categorically reject <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> culture <strong>the</strong>y were born to, choose<br />

one side, <strong>the</strong> white. <strong>The</strong> personal war waged by those who
