<strong>The</strong> poem articulates <strong>the</strong> frustration of normlessness, for<br />

while <strong>the</strong> speaker is aware of <strong>the</strong> norms, <strong>the</strong>y are mean<strong>in</strong>gless <strong>in</strong><br />

her personal context. For what use is it to know, vaguely, that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are songs one might s<strong>in</strong>g or dances one might dance, that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a language to speak and customs to follow, when one<br />

knows little more about <strong>the</strong>m than a common tourist. Jeff<br />

Saunders observes:<br />
