because it <strong>in</strong>cludes and encourages variety of personal<br />

expression for <strong>the</strong> good of <strong>the</strong> group.<br />

In tribal gynocratic systems a multitude of personality and<br />

character types can function positively with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> social order<br />

because <strong>the</strong> systems are focused on social responsibility ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than on privilege and on <strong>the</strong> realities of <strong>the</strong> human constitution<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than on denial-based social fictions to which human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs are compelled to conform by powerful <strong>in</strong>dividuals with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> society.<br />

Tribal gynocracies prom<strong>in</strong>ently feature even distribution of<br />

goods among all members of <strong>the</strong> society on <strong>the</strong> grounds that First<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r enjo<strong>in</strong>ed cooperation and shar<strong>in</strong>g on all her children.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> major dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g characteristics of gynocratic<br />

cultures is <strong>the</strong> absence of punitiveness as a means of social<br />

control. Ano<strong>the</strong>r is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable presence of mean<strong>in</strong>gful<br />

concourse with supernatural be<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Among gynocratic or gynocentric tribal peoples <strong>the</strong> welfare of<br />

<strong>the</strong> young is paramount, <strong>the</strong> complementary nature of all life<br />

forms is stressed, and <strong>the</strong> centrality of powerful women to social<br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g is unquestioned.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> physical and cultural genocide of <strong>American</strong> <strong>Indian</strong><br />

tribes is and was mostly about patriarchal fear of gynocracy. <strong>The</strong><br />

Puritans particularly, but also <strong>the</strong> Catholic, Quaker, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Christian missionaries, like <strong>the</strong>ir secular counterparts, could not<br />

tolerate peoples who allowed women to occupy prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

positions and decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g capacity at every level of society.<br />

Wives tell<strong>in</strong>g husbands and bro<strong>the</strong>rs whe<strong>the</strong>r to buy or sell an<br />

item, daughters tell<strong>in</strong>g fa<strong>the</strong>rs whom <strong>the</strong>y could and could not<br />

murder, empresses attend<strong>in</strong>g parleys with colonizers and be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

treated with deference by male leaders did not sit well with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>vaders.<br />
