this disordered th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to motion long ago and distorted<br />

human be<strong>in</strong>gs’ perceptions so that <strong>the</strong>y believed that o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

creatures—<strong>in</strong>sects and beasts and half-breeds and whites and<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>s and Japanese—were enemies, ra<strong>the</strong>r than part of <strong>the</strong> one<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g we all share, and thus should be destroyed. <strong>The</strong> cure for<br />

that misunderstand<strong>in</strong>g, for Tayo, was a reorientation of<br />

perception so that he could know directly that <strong>the</strong> true nature of<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g is magical and that <strong>the</strong> proper duty of <strong>the</strong> creatures, <strong>the</strong><br />

land, and human be<strong>in</strong>gs is to live <strong>in</strong> harmony with what is. For<br />

Tayo, wholeness consists of sow<strong>in</strong>g plants and nurtur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

car<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> spotted cattle, and especially know<strong>in</strong>g that he<br />

belongs exactly where he is, that he is and always has been<br />

home. <strong>The</strong> story that is capable of heal<strong>in</strong>g his m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>the</strong> story<br />

that <strong>the</strong> land has always signified:<br />

<strong>The</strong> transition was completed. In <strong>the</strong> west and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south<br />

too, <strong>the</strong> clouds with round heavy bellies had ga<strong>the</strong>red for<br />

<strong>the</strong> dawn. It was not necessary, but it was right, even if <strong>the</strong><br />

sky had been cloudless <strong>the</strong> end was <strong>the</strong> same. <strong>The</strong> ear for<br />

<strong>the</strong> story and <strong>the</strong> eye for <strong>the</strong> pattern were <strong>the</strong>irs; <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was <strong>the</strong>irs; we came out of this land and we are hers …<br />

<strong>The</strong>y had always been loved. He thought of her <strong>the</strong>n; she<br />

had always loved him, she had never left him; she had<br />

always been <strong>the</strong>re. He crossed <strong>the</strong> river at sunrise. (p. 255)<br />

So Tayo’s <strong>in</strong>itiation <strong>in</strong>to mo<strong>the</strong>rhood is complete, and <strong>the</strong><br />

witchery is countered for a time, at least for one human be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and his beloved land. Tayo has bridged <strong>the</strong> distance between his<br />

isolated consciousness and <strong>the</strong> universe of be<strong>in</strong>g, because he has<br />

loved <strong>the</strong> spirit woman who br<strong>in</strong>gs all th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

because he is at last conscious that she has always loved <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

his people, and himself. He is able at last to take his normal<br />

place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> life of <strong>the</strong> Laguna, a place that is to be characterized<br />

by nurtur<strong>in</strong>g, car<strong>in</strong>g for life, behav<strong>in</strong>g like a good mo<strong>the</strong>r. Auntie
