movements and action and <strong>in</strong> characters, <strong>the</strong> vision was<br />

reconstructed as closely as may be done of <strong>the</strong> nonord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong><br />

this material plane. <strong>The</strong> people and Black Elk were reenact<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> vision so that its power would be revealed and renewed on<br />

earth. Black Elk comments on <strong>the</strong> strength or truth of this<br />

enactment: as <strong>the</strong>y were pray<strong>in</strong>g and danc<strong>in</strong>g he once aga<strong>in</strong> saw<br />

<strong>the</strong> sacred tipi as <strong>in</strong> his vision—<strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow door, <strong>the</strong> horses,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Six Grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side. He even saw himself on<br />

<strong>the</strong> bay <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> tipi. As <strong>the</strong> vision faded, it began to storm;<br />

w<strong>in</strong>d and hail struck.<br />

<strong>The</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> village ran to fasten down <strong>the</strong>ir tipis,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> black horse riders sang to <strong>the</strong> drums that rolled<br />

what might have happened <strong>the</strong>re while we were danc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs had spr<strong>in</strong>kled fresh soil on <strong>the</strong> nation’s<br />

roads across it, and all around this little circle of <strong>the</strong><br />

nation’s hoop we saw <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ts of t<strong>in</strong>y pony hoofs as<br />

though <strong>the</strong> spirit horses had been danc<strong>in</strong>g while we<br />

danced. 32<br />

And Black Elk himself felt renewed; <strong>the</strong> fear that had dogged
