This sequence reveals to Black Elk that his body is pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong><br />

a special manner, signify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of vision or k<strong>in</strong>d of power<br />

he has had:<br />

I had not noticed how I was dressed until now, and I saw<br />

that I was pa<strong>in</strong>ted red all over, and my jo<strong>in</strong>ts were pa<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

black, with white stripes between <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts. My bay had<br />

lightn<strong>in</strong>g stripes all over him, and his mane was cloud. And<br />

when I brea<strong>the</strong>d, my breath was lightn<strong>in</strong>g. 26<br />

He is assured of his triumph after pa<strong>in</strong>ful experience; his powers<br />

are affirmed and <strong>the</strong>ir emblems shown aga<strong>in</strong>. He learns <strong>the</strong><br />

songs, <strong>the</strong> way to dress when act<strong>in</strong>g as an agent of <strong>the</strong><br />

supernatural, <strong>the</strong> movements and sequences that will ensure his<br />

success <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se matters, and, most of all, <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g of his<br />

experience <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong> people, liv<strong>in</strong>g and yet unborn.<br />

Had Black Elk had this vision under more normal<br />

circumstances, he would have returned from his vision and<br />

recounted it to an older holy man, <strong>the</strong> one who had directed his<br />

quest. <strong>The</strong>n, with <strong>the</strong> holy man’s help, he would have enacted<br />

significant portions of that vision <strong>in</strong> a ceremony for <strong>the</strong> people.<br />

In this way, <strong>the</strong> power bestowed on him dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vision would<br />

have been diffused, confirmed, <strong>in</strong>tensified or amplified, and<br />

rendered real and functional on material and human levels. But<br />

he was very young. It frightened him, made him feel separated<br />

from his family and friends, burdened him with a knowledge that<br />

he was not old enough to use or understand. Some <strong>Indian</strong>s feel<br />

that <strong>the</strong> disasters that befell Black Elk’s people subsequently<br />

were a result of his failure to follow <strong>the</strong> usual pattern; yet it<br />

seems that, had this been necessary or wise, <strong>the</strong> Grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r would have waited several years before call<strong>in</strong>g Black Elk<br />

or would have chosen someone who was of <strong>the</strong> right age to give<br />

that vision to. Eventually Black Elk did what he should have<br />

done, and <strong>the</strong> account of <strong>the</strong> ceremonies held <strong>in</strong> enact<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>
