And <strong>in</strong> this mystic body, or mythic character, Black Elk goes<br />

through <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> vision.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs give Black Elk <strong>the</strong> power to make live, <strong>the</strong><br />

power to understand and to know, <strong>the</strong> power to destroy, <strong>the</strong><br />

power to purify, <strong>the</strong> power to feed and nurture, and <strong>the</strong> power to<br />

heal. Each of <strong>the</strong>se powers is signified with an emblem or<br />

sacramental object, and some are accompanied by a song to be<br />

sung when call<strong>in</strong>g on that power. 19 Most of all, he was given <strong>the</strong><br />

gift of prophecy, <strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong> universe itself.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> fifth Grandfa<strong>the</strong>r spoke, <strong>the</strong> oldest of <strong>the</strong>m all,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Spirit of <strong>the</strong> Sky. “My boy,” he said, “I have sent for<br />

you and you have come. My power you shall see!” He<br />

stretched his arms and turned <strong>in</strong>to a spotted eagle hover<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

“Behold,” he said, “all <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> air shall come to<br />

you, and <strong>the</strong>y and <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds and <strong>the</strong> stars shall be like<br />

relatives. You shall go across <strong>the</strong> earth with my power.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> eagle soared above my head and fluttered <strong>the</strong>re;<br />

and suddenly <strong>the</strong> sky was full of friendly w<strong>in</strong>gs all com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

toward me. 20<br />

In <strong>the</strong> next sequence, Black Elk learns <strong>the</strong> immediate future of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Oglala Lakotas. In <strong>the</strong> person of Eagle W<strong>in</strong>g Stretches, <strong>the</strong><br />

Grandfa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> West, he journeys over a “distant landscape,”<br />

rescu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people from threatened annihilation by war,<br />

disease, and massacre. He restores for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> ancient way, <strong>the</strong><br />

Path of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sacred</strong> Pipe, <strong>the</strong> holy tree, <strong>the</strong> nation’s hoop. 21 <strong>The</strong>n<br />

he discovers <strong>the</strong> far<strong>the</strong>r future of <strong>the</strong> people, revealed once aga<strong>in</strong><br />

symbolically. He is shown <strong>the</strong> means of sav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong><br />

earth from <strong>the</strong> great destructive forces that would overcome<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, which is <strong>the</strong> sacred flower, <strong>the</strong> “herb of understand<strong>in</strong>g.” 22<br />

He learns songs of power and sees <strong>the</strong> people call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> powers<br />

of <strong>the</strong> cosmos. 23 That power comes to <strong>the</strong>ir aid at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong><br />

fourth ascent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> guise of “<strong>the</strong> chief of all <strong>the</strong> horses, and when
