associated with Thunder and <strong>the</strong> West <strong>in</strong>dicate a highly sacred<br />

or powerful vision and signify revelation, <strong>in</strong>trospection, and<br />

deep change. 15 Because of <strong>the</strong>se qualities, <strong>the</strong> Thunder and <strong>the</strong><br />

West are said to be terrify<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> power to<br />

“make live” and <strong>the</strong> power to destroy. <strong>The</strong>se powers are<br />

conferred on Black Elk, and are such as to terrify any man.<br />

This vision is of or from <strong>the</strong> West. Its major symbolic <strong>the</strong>me<br />

is Thunder and what is associated with it: horses, lightn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>bow, water. <strong>The</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r symbols occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of <strong>the</strong>se.<br />

And each action or speech occurs from <strong>the</strong> West, which is not<br />

<strong>the</strong> usual sequence <strong>in</strong> Oglala practice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> directions <strong>the</strong>mselves are <strong>the</strong> major motif, as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

generally are <strong>in</strong> Oglala rituals. Orient<strong>in</strong>g oneself to <strong>the</strong><br />

directions is basic to all Native North <strong>American</strong> peoples and<br />

<strong>The</strong> presence of different troops of horses, one troop from<br />

each direction, <strong>in</strong>dicates that <strong>the</strong> vision will be comprehensive.<br />

<strong>The</strong> powers that will derive from it will <strong>in</strong>clude war and<br />

heal<strong>in</strong>g, knowledge and life. <strong>The</strong> poems and text will, like <strong>the</strong><br />

actions and sacramental objects, be related to this whole and to<br />

<strong>the</strong>se powers. All <strong>the</strong> powers that a man can possess will be<br />

represented here, and Black Elk will carry <strong>the</strong>m back to his<br />

people, to use on <strong>the</strong>ir behalf. <strong>The</strong> primary thrust of <strong>the</strong> vision, <strong>in</strong><br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g with its western po<strong>in</strong>t of view, will be that of<br />

revelation, self-awareness and deep personal experience, and<br />

supernatural truth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Grandfa<strong>the</strong>rs of Powers of <strong>the</strong> Six Directions are <strong>the</strong><br />

agents of this vision and its power. <strong>The</strong> First Grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong><br />

Power of <strong>the</strong> West, tells Black Elk what will be given him:<br />

“Behold <strong>the</strong>m yonder where <strong>the</strong> sun goes down, <strong>the</strong> thunder<br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs! You shall see, and have from <strong>the</strong>m my power; and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y shall take you to <strong>the</strong> high and lonely center of <strong>the</strong> earth<br />

that you may see; even to <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> sun
