past, present, and future, <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g vision and dream <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

action as <strong>the</strong> story moves toward its <strong>in</strong>evitable conclusion.<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> novels are designed to reflect ritual or tribal worldviews,<br />

<strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ctions usually made between “realism” and<br />

“surrealism” are <strong>in</strong>verted, reversed, or ignored entirely. In<br />

accordance with ritual literature of <strong>the</strong> oral tradition, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

novels <strong>the</strong> time l<strong>in</strong>e is achronological; that is, <strong>the</strong> ritual nature of<br />

time is <strong>the</strong> measure used, so action sequences <strong>in</strong>clude memories,<br />

legends, histories, dreams, and visions, <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation of<br />

which suggests <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrative nature of ritual consciousness. So<br />

crucial is <strong>the</strong> difference between mundane timekeep<strong>in</strong>g and ritual<br />

time that <strong>the</strong> sense of time used <strong>in</strong> tribal novels determ<strong>in</strong>es what<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d of consciousness is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> novel—western,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial, secular or tribal, wilderness, ritual consciousness.<br />

In House Made of Dawn Momaday makes direct reference to<br />

<strong>the</strong> centrality of ritual time for an understand<strong>in</strong>g of tribal<br />

literature and tribal life. He describes a time when Francisco<br />

took his grandsons, Abel and Abel’s bro<strong>the</strong>r Vidal, out to<br />

Campo Santo, “south and west of <strong>the</strong> Middle.” <strong>The</strong>re Francisco<br />

<strong>in</strong>structed <strong>the</strong> boys <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance of ceremonial time tell<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

<strong>The</strong>re, at <strong>the</strong> rounder knoll, it was time to plant corn and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, where <strong>the</strong> highest plane fell away, that was <strong>the</strong> day of<br />

<strong>the</strong> rooster race, six days ahead of <strong>the</strong> black bull runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and <strong>the</strong> little horse danc<strong>in</strong>g, seven ahead of <strong>the</strong> Pecos<br />

immigration; and <strong>the</strong>re, and <strong>the</strong>re, and <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong> secret<br />

dances, every four days of fast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kiva, <strong>the</strong> moon<br />

good for hoe<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> time for harvest, <strong>the</strong> rabbit and<br />

witch hunts, all <strong>the</strong> proper days of <strong>the</strong> clans and societies;<br />

and just <strong>the</strong>re at <strong>the</strong> saddle, where <strong>the</strong> sky was lower and<br />

brighter than elsewhere on <strong>the</strong> high black land, <strong>the</strong> clear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ditches <strong>in</strong> advance of <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>in</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> long<br />

race of <strong>the</strong> black men at dawn. (p. 177)
