WORLDWIDE ON THE SAFE SIDE –<br />
THE GS1-STANDARD<br />
Ensures correct labeling and there<strong>by</strong> full traceability of your pallets. These labels include information such as<br />
batch number, item number, product name, production time and more. The GS1 standard defines the exact<br />
content, size and positioning. What for? So that traceability, transparency and efficiency are always ensured<br />
in the warehouse, in the logistics center or at various stations in the supply chain. A non-scannable pallet<br />
interrupts the process. This leads to loss of time and money. The applied labels must therefore contain<br />
easy-to-read and scannable information – and therefore be printed in excellent quality.<br />
IDENTIFICATION CONFORM TO GS1<br />
• The core element and mandatory component of the<br />
GS1 transport label is the SSCC (Serial Shipping<br />
Container Code), which enables perfect traceability<br />
of the pallet throughout the entire supply chain<br />
• Additional information such as GLN (global location<br />
number) of the delivery address, batch number or<br />
weight information is also encoded in the GS1-128<br />
symbology<br />
• The fields, field lengths and codes are standardized<br />
to ensure that all goods can be identified with a<br />
barcode scanner<br />
• All barcodes must be error-free and 100% readable<br />
• Size of the pallet label is A5 landscape<br />
• For pallets, two labels are normally applied to two<br />

The GS1 process describes the positioning<br />
of pallet labels on the pallet – for both fully<br />
and partially packed pallets.<br />
HEADER SEGMENT<br />
Contains freely editable information,<br />
e.g. specification of the sender as well as the recipient.<br />
MIDDLE-SEGMENT<br />
Plain text indication of the information encoded in the barcode. The<br />
data content should be printed with a font height of at least 7 mm.<br />
FOOT SEGMENT<br />
The data is encoded in the GS1-128 barcode.<br />
The SSCC is the only mandatory information<br />
on the pallet label.
PALLET IDENTIFICATION – MAKE YOUR CHOICE!<br />
Whether for warehouse identifi cation or for shipping within the supply chain: pallets must be labeled clearly and<br />
professionally. On the one hand, to ensure smooth delivery and, on the other hand, to be quickly located and<br />
traceable.<br />
The labeling is done with pallet labels which are applied to the pallets manually or automatically. Linear<br />
applicators, in which the labels are applied <strong>by</strong> an applicator arm, are the most commonly used and have proven<br />
themselves many times over. If a high degree of fl exibility is required, industrial robots are also used. Which<br />
application method is the right one depends mainly on business requirements. Other dependencies such as<br />
special environmental infl uences may also play a role.<br />

INTELLIGENT SOFTWARE FOR PALLET LABELING<br />
• Print data can be sent fully automatically to the pallet labeler via the TRACE-it data management<br />
software. TRACE-it connects, manages and controls all labeling operations in the production process in<br />
one central location - for high transparency and accuracy in the various process steps.<br />
• Using a PLC or scanner, TRACE-it knows when the pallet is there, what it is loaded with, what needs to<br />
be printed, and when the labeling process is finished.<br />
• When a pallet is finished being packed and labeled, feedback is sent to the system. The pallet is<br />
released and goes to the warehouse or to shipping.<br />
• TRACE-it controls, regulates, tracks and stores the exact path of the pallet.<br />
RELEVANT FOR YOUR DECISION<br />
MANUALY OR AUTOMATED PALLET LABELING?<br />
• Depending on the number of pallets, pallet labeling can be performed manually or automatically.<br />
• Manual pallet labeling is the best option for small pallet quantities. The manual process takes time and it<br />
must be clear to the employee where and how the label must be applied <strong>by</strong> hand to ensure the position<br />
meets the GS1 standard.<br />
• Systems, such as the XPU or the XPA, automatically label pallets to GS1 standards and adjust to<br />
conveyor speed. This allows a high volume of pallets to be labeled on the fl y without the need for an<br />
operator.<br />
• The pallet is stopped briefl y and the labels are applied via the automated system. If production volumes<br />
increase or if congestion occurs in the production process, such a system can adapt and also be scaled<br />
up.<br />
IN WHAT PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT IS THE SOLUTION LOCATED?<br />
• As an integrated system, the XPA 936 performs fully automatically with maximum ease of use and<br />
perfect print quality.<br />
• If the final labeling of the pallet must withstand a harsh environment (cold, heat, dust, humidity, ...), it<br />
may be necessary to protect the system with a protective housing.<br />
