HIDDEN DESTINATION 

Gillespie Wash 

From Globe, take US Highway 60 east 

to Safford; continue to US Highway 

191 (1st Avenue), then make a right 

to head south. After about 17 miles, 

turn right onto State Route 266 (the 

road to Ft. Grant), then look for the 

windmill on your right. Here you’ll 

find a pullout area for campers, 

plenty of color from spring wildflow- 

ers and a short walking trail that 

passes by a working cattle ranch.

Workman’s Creek 

From the junction of U.S. Highway 60 & State Hwy. 188 (between Globe and Miami) 

drive northwest on Hwy. 88 for approximately 15 miles to the junction of State Hwy. 

288. Bear right and follow Hwy. 288 for approximately 25 ½ miles to the Workman 

Creek Bridge. If desired, you may also drive along the creek on FR 487 that turns 

right (east) just past the bridge. It is approximately 3 miles to Workman Creek Falls 

(a high-clearance vehicle is needed).

Spring is in the air! The 

world is coming back 

to life…literally. After 

2 long years of living in uncertainty, 

the world is slowly 

coming back to life. We do 

not have to quarantine ourselves 

in our homes, away 

from our loved ones. We 

can gather together. We can 

enjoy dinner and a movie or 

attend concerts, again. 

One of the many ways San 

Carlos celebrates spring is 

getting out and enjoying the 

poppies that usually cover 

the hills and mountains along 

Highway 70. Tourists come 

from near and far just to marvel 

at the beauty created by 

Mother Nature. Alas, Mother 

Nature is a fickle creature 

and sprinkled a few poppies 

alongside the highway. They 

are still beautiful, nonetheless. 

That did not stop the San 

Carlos General Manager’s 

Office from organizing a 

Poppy Feast. They reached 

out to Nnee Bich’o Nii’s 

Apache Transit Team to provide 

transportation for people 

attending the fest. The

challenge with this collaboration 

was the location of 

the fest. It was on top of the 

Peridot mesa that has a dirt 

road going up to the top. Our 

Commercial Driver’s License 

(CDL) Transit Driver, 

Jocelyn Harney, accepted the 

challenge. 

On Saturday, April 9, 

2022, 24 attendees boarded 

Apache Transit at the 

Apache Gold Casino and Basha’s 

parking lots. They were 

all excited for the adventure 

they were embarking upon. 

When the bus turned onto 

the dirt road from Highway 

70, there was a small handful 

of onlookers standing at the 

top, cheering on Jocelyn. It 

should be noted that the road 

is well maintained and had 

recently been graded for the 

events held that day. It was 

definitely a sight to see an 

Apache Transit bus coming 

up the mountainside on a dirt 

road. The passengers were 

impressed with the bus and 

service they received. 

Nnee Bich’o Nii Apache 

Transit has been providing 

safe, reliable and affordable 

transportation for the people 

of San Carlos with routes going 

from Globe to Safford. 

Their buses are state-of-theart 

when it comes to safety, 

starting with the drivers who 

received Passenger Assistance 

Safety & Sensitivity 

training. They are trained to 

identify passengers with special 

needs and assist wheelchair-bound 

passengers on 

and off the bus using their 

wheelchair lifts and securing 

their chairs with harnesses. 

The buses are outfitted with 

plexiglass barriers and hand 

sanitizers, and are sanitized 

throughout the day. At the 

end of every run, they are 

thoroughly cleaned from 

top to bottom. So, if you are 

ever driving by their yard at 

2 in the morning, and see one 

lone bus parked on the wash 

bay, the driver is cleaning the 

bus. The newer buses they 

received in 2021 are outfitted 

with nanotechnology. Everything 

inside of the bus is covered 

in nanoscale silver, killing 

any bacteria and germs 

instantly. They also have 

HEPA filters that clean the 

air inside the bus. Although 

the mask requirements are 

not as stringent as they were 

during the lockdown, Apache 

Transit requires their passengers 

and drivers to continue 

wearing their masks when 

they are on board the bus per 

National Mandatory Mask

Tonto National 

Monument highlights 

quintessential Arizona 

The Salado Phenomena, 

700 years ago, 

blended ideas of 

neighboring Native American 

cultures to create a 

unique and vibrant society. 

Tonto National Monument 

showcases two Salado-style 

cliff dwellings. 

Colorful pottery, woven 

cotton cloth and other artifacts 

tell a story of people 

living and using resources 

from the northern Sonoran 

Desert from 1250 to 1450 

CE. 

People have lived in 

Tonto Basin for thousands 

of years. Prehistoric peoples, 

Apaches and European 

settlers have all called it 

home. One of these groups, 

known by archaeologists as 

the Salado, built the cliff 


dwellings seen today. 

Most of the rooms contained 

hearths, suggesting 

that a single family would 

have lived in each room. 

Visitors can still see soot 

from their fires blackening 

the alcove above the dwelling. 

Archaeologists have 

made a few modifications 

to the dwelling in order to 

facilitate visitation. A stone 

bench was installed against 

the boulder at the front of 

the cave, the floor was covered 

with sand to protect 

the prehistoric plaster floor, 

and a modern retaining 

wall was built at the front 

of the alcove. Even with 

these changes, the dwelling 

serves as a remarkable testament 

to the unique Sala-

do architecture. 

There are many reasons 

these people may have chosen 

to build their homes in 

caves. Perhaps they were 

protecting themselves from 

neighbors or trying to get 

away from crowded conditions 

on the valley floor. 

The reasons why the Salado 

left Tonto Basin may 

never be known. Drought, 

disease and warfare may 

have led to their departure 

in the early to mid-1400s. 

Long before Europeans arrived 

in the New World, the 

cliff dwellings were left to 

the wind and sun. 

By the early 1900s, the 

Basin was already a tourist 

destination for people 

traveling on the Southern 

Pacific Railroad. 

As the number of visitors 

increased, so did damage to 

the dwellings. Concern for 

this led to the creation of 

Tonto National Monument 

in 1907.

The Legends of 

Superior Trails 

(LOST) is an 

11.65-mile hiking, biking 

and equestrian trail 

that travels through Superior 

and the beautiful 

Sonoran Desert 60 miles 

east of the Phoenix metro 

area. 

The trail creates a connection 

from the stunning 

Arizona National Scenic 

Trail, through Superior, to 

rugged Queen Creek Canyon. 

Along the way it passes 

through Arnett Canyon’s 

riparian forest and the remains 

of the abandoned 

town of Pinal, with majestic 

Picketpost Mountain loom- 

ing to the south and Apache 

Leap to the east. 

LOST is divided into five 

segments, all open to hiking, 

running, mountain biking 

and horseback riding: 

Arnett Canyon, Pinal City 

Panther, Miners & Ranchers, 

Superior Town Center 

and Queen Creek Canyon. 

The 2.25-mile Queen 

Creek Canyon segment follows 

the old “million dollar” 

highway from Miami 

to Superior, and still boasts 

extensive sections of pavement. 

It also passes through 

the historic Claypool Tunnel 

and crosses the original 

Queen Creek Bridge, 

built in 1926 and 1921 respectively. 

An ore bin and 

closed-off mine openings 

along this trail segment reflect 

the area’s mining history. 

The segment winds up 

at Magma Avenue in Superior, 

where hikers can continue 

with a stroll through 

the town center. 

The 1.2-mile Pinal City 

Panther segment leads hikers 

to what’s left of the old 

town, paralleling Queen 

Creek along the way. Near 

the remains of Pinal one can 

cross the creek to reach the

Historic Copper Miners’ Rest welcomes guests to Miami 

In the heart of Miami, 

Arizona, the historic 

Copper Miners’ Rest 

bed and breakfast offers 

European-style lodging accommodations 

– including 

three very special guest 

rooms, a studio apartment 

and a sitting room. Here, 

guests will find authentic 

miners’ boarding rooms, 

fully equipped kitchens, 

outdoor terraces, satellite 

television, off-street parking, 

and the peace and quiet 

of small town living. 

Added to the National 

Register of Historic Places 

in 2000, Copper Miners’ 

Rest is named for the men 

and women who worked 

and raised families amid 

the area’s copper mining

industry. Originally built as 

a two-story frame construction 

by Matti Soderman in 

1910, it was converted/rebuilt 

into a concrete structure 

between 1917 and 

1921. Upstairs was a rooming 

house for Scandinavian 

miners, named Eva’s 

Rooms after Mrs. Soderman; 

on the main floor was 

the Wasa Bar, named for the 

Sodermans’ home region of 

Finland. The property also 

featured a Finnish sauna 

for public use from 1910 

until the 1950s. During prohibition, 

the original bar 

was removed and a hidden 

basement was constructed 

to serve as a small speakeasy. 

Through the years, the 

main floor has served as a 

mercantile, a land office 

and a post office. 

The Sodermans sold the 

property in the early 1970s, 

and the building went virtually 

untouched until 1996, 

when a new owner entered 

the picture. In 1997 that 

new owner, Ms. Hayward, 

opened Delvan’s Drawing 

Room, a unique “Bed 

and Fix your own D#%! 

Breakfast” decorated with 

many local antiques acquired 

through networking 

with local building owners. 

Owing to health reasons, in 

2005 Ms. Hayward closed 

the business and posted a 

“For Sale” sign on the door. 

The property sold in July 

2006. Winona Dale Barcón 

and Keith J. Droste, the 

fourth and current owners, 

reopened the “Bed and Fix 

your own D#%! Breakfast” 

after finding that the 1910 

building, already beautifully 

restored, had “good 

bones” and is a great foundation 

for making improvements. 

Rooms are furnished 

with both antiques and reproductions. 

They include 

the Carlota, a unique bedroom 

with an antique fullsize 

brass bed, armoire and 

dressing table; the similarly 

furnished Castle Dome; 

the Inspiration, a spacious 

room with an antique 

French full-size bed; and 

the Superintendent’s Quarters, 

a studio apartment 

complete with kitchen, sitting 

area, full-size bed and 

private bath, and original 

woodwork and doors.

Extreme Trail Run 

is happening again this year 

at Round Mountain Park on 

June 4, 2022. There’s also 

a non-competitive 4.3K 

fun run/walk for anyone 

who wants a little less of a 

challenge. For all runners 

and walkers, there’s a pancake 

breakfast and awards 

ceremony after the event at 

the Elks Club. Fees are the 

same as last year: $25 prior 

to May 22, then $30 on 

race day. Families with up 

to three minor children can 

sign up for $55, and student 

fees are discounted at $20. 

Registration is from 4:45 

a.m. - 5:45 a.m., with the 

official start at 6 a.m. For 

more than two decades this 

event has brought runners 

and walkers of all skill levels 

and ages to celebrate 

National Trails Day and explore 

scenic paths that ascend 

Round Mountain Park. 

The challenging 7K route 

has plenty of rocky trails 

and some boulder-hopping. 

For new runners to 

the course, race organizers 

suggest at least one visit 

ahead of time to scope out 

the trail and experience the 

course before race day. To 

find Round Mountain Park 

from downtown Globe 

heading east, turn left at 

Denny’s and drive past the

Center preserves area art 


Located at 101 N. Broad 

St. in downtown Globe, 

the Cobre Valley Center 

for the Arts is a non-profit member-supported 

center founded 

in 1984. The restoration of the 

Old Gila County Courthouse 

was achieved by several local 

artists. Many volunteer hours 

transformed this 111-year-old 

building into a venue for exhibiting 

local talent while preserving 

the building’s historic 

features. 

Today the center consists of a 

gallery housing local art along 

with areas designed for crafts and 

community theater. As the days get 

longer and the weather warmer, the 

center has reopened the community 

theater for public shows.

Stairizona Trail 

This historic staircase, ascending 

one of Globe’s hills, is slated to 

be part of an urban walking tail 

named Stairizona Trail. 



Blazing the “Stairizona Trail” 



On the opening day of April’s Arizona Poppy Fest, 

a crowd gathered below the historic Silver King 

staircase in downtown Globe to celebrate the official 

opening of a new city walking trail. 

The 100-year-old stairway, newly beautified by murals 

and metalwork from regional artists, will be part of the 

Stairizona Trail, a project of a community initiative named 

I Art Globe. 

With a number of trails in the area now closed, I Art 

Globe set out to create an alternative walking path that 

also celebrates history. “We have eight different 100-yearold 

concrete staircases; let’s create an urban trail,” said Dr. 

Thea Wilshire, founder of I Art Globe. Wilshire said the 

Stairizona Trail, thanks to community interest, went from 

one short route to three routes of different lengths. The trail 

will include five historic stairways and pedestrian bridges. 

Looking to the trail’s future, I Art Globe has issued a 

call to artists for one or two wall murals and three staircase 

murals. Wilshire said that benches – including some commemorating 

Chinese history and culture in Globe – and 

educational signage are also planned for the trail’s future.

Boulder Canyon, which requires a 

bit of rock scrambling in places, Box 

Canyon and Ridge Trails. The park is

that the ascent can be a punishing cardio workout! Try an

hills - these hills are so much more enjoyable, with five levels

range from 20-40 miles, depending on the size and weight of 

the rider, and how much you pedal versus relying on power.

Globe and look for wildflowers on your way up to the Old 

Dominion Mine Park. Or ride over to the Besh Ba Gowah Archaeological

below the Pinal Mountains. It has enough battery life for 

a Pinal Mountain adventure; the RADROVER is ideal for
