What a pleasure it is to open your home 

and studios. As I write these words, I am 

conscious of the fact that they have a ‘postpandemic’ 

edge to them. I am content to 

embrace that edge as it reminds me how our 

journeys and adventures in life got smaller – 

and now we’re out and we can roam!

I’ve often thought that, when you open 

your home and studios, you also open your 

heart. It is such a welcoming thing to do. 

That simple act of saying “come in, have a 

look around” is made all the more resonant 

as Open Studios invites you to spend time 

taking a look at the creative output of 

artists across Cambridgeshire. I think that 

the pursuit of filling a blank canvas, paper 

or space with a creative thought is one of 

the most adventurous undertakings that we 

do as human beings. 

So, with such an invite from the 

adventurous creatives amongst us who get 

the privilege of saying “come on in, come 

and see what I made”, we must answer 

the call and spend a few hours roaming 

around. I seriously encourage you to take 

part. Not only do you get to visit people in 

their homes and studios, share their space 

and enjoy conversations that could be 

serendipitous, delightful and joyous, but 

you also profit from strolling through the 

rich abundance of creative artists, makers 

and shakers who fuel Cambridgeshire’s 

creative life. 

I am so excited to be able to take part in 

Cambridge Open Studios. Hope to see you 

on the creative adventure trail.

COVID-19 & COS 

At the time of going to press, we cannot be sure what the 

ongoing situation with COVID will be in the UK. Hopefully, 

come July, everything will be open as usual. 

Please take these familiar, sensible precautions when visiting 

studios: 

• wear a face mask if requested; 

• only visit if you are not displaying any symptoms of COVID; 

• check our website for the latest updates as some studios 

may not be able to open as planned:

Management Team Volunteers 2022 

Gabriella del Valle is our chair, temporary 

membership secretary, book-keeper and helps 

organise Guide distribution. She is also a jeweller. 

Sara Rawlinson is our vice chair and in charge of 

all things IT related. She has been instrumental in 

designing the new website. She is also a photographer. 

Susan Widlake is our company secretary. She is also 

a milliner and textile artist. 

Leigh Watson has been our treasurer since 2013 

and is retiring this year (get in touch if you would 

like to volunteer!). She looks after the budgets and 

predicts expenditure. She is also a mixed-media artist. 

COS News and Acknowledgements 2022 

Welcome to Cambridge Open Studios 2022! It is such a pleasure 

to be able to greet all our artists and visitors returning to one of 

Cambridgeshire’s longest-running and largest cultural festivals. 

It feels like people are desperate to get back to some kind of normality 

– and having a hopefully ‘normal’ Open Studios is a positive marker to 

have in the calendar. We have a record number of members this year, 

and, of these, 370 artists will be participating in 230 venues. 

Having spoken with other artists, we are all in agreement that being 

able to share our work once again with the public and to have direct 

feedback is so important to us as creatives. It will be interesting to 

see how the past two years have affected us creatively. 

This theme is reflected in our beautifully written Foreword by 

Sonita Alleyne. We are honoured to have the Master of Jesus College, 

Cambridge, writing a few words about the joy of being welcomed 

by creatives. Sonita is also a Fellow of the RSA, a Royal Society that is 

committed to the promotion of the Arts. We are very grateful for the 

encouragement and delight that she has bestowed upon us. 

This year we again held a competition for our members to submit 

and vote for an image for the Guide cover. The entries were all very 

impressive, and the overall winner was painter Jelena Lukic. We 

hope you agree it is a captivating design. 

We are mindful of our environmental impact, so we have reduced 

by half the number of Guides that have been printed and are 

encouraging people to download the e-Guide or use our App. Do 

hang on to your printed copy to use as a directory throughout the 

year or pass it to friends who might be looking to commission an 

artist to make a special item! 

Rosemary Dodgson is in charge of governance, 

making sure we follow our articles. She is also a 

botanical artist. 

Peter Harrison is responsible for publicity, joining 

the Team in 2016. It is also his last year, so please 

let us know if you’d like to help out. He is also a 

furniture maker. 

Sarah Lucy Lee organises the distribution of the 

flyers and Guides throughout Cambridgeshire and 

is the social secretary. She is also an oil painter. 

Jocelyne Dudding was in charge of Guide 

production before stepping down in March this year. 

She is also a jeweller. 

Alison Hullyer has taken over the role of managing 

the production of the Guide. She is also an illustrator 

and printmaker. 

Alison Ksiazkiewicz is responsible for social media. 

She is also a printmaker. 

Bob Banks is in charge of the adverting space and 

creating our promotional videos. He is also a painter. 

Emily Jolley is our project manager and is 

responsible for grant applications. She is also an 

abstract painter. 

Anna Dempster has a new role developing 

partnerships – including liaising with galleries, 

museums, arts and educational organisations. She is 

the founding director and curator of ArtSpace57. 

This year’s Guide production has been a real team effort, with 

Jos Dudding doing much of the photo editing and planning before 

stepping down in March to concentrate on her own work. Thank 

you, Jos, for all your hard work and many hours spent creating such 

a high standard of publication over the past seven years. 

I have been a member of COS for 26 years and somehow dodged 

getting involved in the management side of things. This year, I felt it 

was time I did my bit, so I have been doing my best to get up to speed 

in my new role. It’s been a steep learning curve! I couldn’t have done 

it without the superb work of our Editor, David Hatton, Website 

Administrator, Clare Gilmour, and Designer, Colin Donoghue, 

who have made this Guide possible. Also, many thanks to 

Gabriella del Valle, our new Chair, for holding us all together and 

being the voice of reason. Furthermore, we have a new professional 

marketing consultant on board, Emily Felix-Davies, who we feel 

will be a real asset to COS. 

We are continuously enhancing the COS website to allow you to 

discover artists and their artworks and to create your own art-trails. 

There is now an option to become a ‘Friend’ and support the Arts at 

the same time. Thank you to Sara Rawlinson for her instrumental 

role in developing the new website. 

Finally, the COS Management Team would like to give our heartfelt 

thanks to Marion Curtis, our long-standing Membership Secretary, 

who stepped down in February. Over the past 14 years, Marion has 

been a consistent support to our members. We wish Marion all the 

best and look forward to seeing her new artistic endeavours. We are 

always looking for new volunteers for the Management Team, so do 

get in touch if you’d like to get involved and have your say on how 

COS is run.

COS 2022 studio descriptions 

The ‘In-Town’ studio pages in this Guide are 

ordered approximately according to each 

studio’s geographical location. 

Distinct areas (e.g. ‘Cambridge East’) are 

printed at the top of each Guide page to help 

in planning visits and finding studios. These 

headers are tinted to match the colours of the 

zones on the map located on the inside of the 

front cover. 

Each studio entry has a unique Guide 

number (1–90), enabling cross-referencing 

with the map. 

Other COS artists who are members, but not

Tips for using the Out-of-Town Guide 

COS 2022 studio descriptions 

The ‘Out-of-Town’ studio pages in this Guide 

are ordered approximately according to each 

studio’s geographical location. 

Distinct areas (e.g. ‘Ely area’) are printed at the 

top of each Guide page to help in planning 

visits and finding studios. These headers are 

tinted to match the colours of the zones on the 

map located on the inside of the rear cover. 

Each studio entry has a unique Guide number 

(91–231), enabling cross-referencing with 

the map. 

Other COS artists who are members, but not 

exhibiting this year, are detailed in the index 

at the rear (pp. 82–86). NB Studios will not be 

open during the 5th weekend of the month, 

30–31 July. 

Key to symbols used in main Guide entries:

visitors can expect to see the studio, or a 

recreated studio environment, in which the

Interested in joining COS? 

Any artist or maker living or working in 

Cambridgeshire is eligible for membership 

of Cambridge Open Studios (COS) and 

participation in the Open Studios festival 

held in July. 

COS has been 

taking place 

for over 35 

years and 

has become 

a flourishing 

community of 

over 500 artists 

and makers. 

There is no selection process, and our 

modest fees will give you much support and 

many benefits. As a member of COS, you 

will receive: 

• a dedicated web page to promote your 

artwork and events; 

• an induction event and new ‘buddy’ 

support; 

• a free guide to setting up and opening 

your studio; 

• a supportive network to meet and talk 

with other artists. 

For an extra participation fee, you will: 

• be able to open your home or studio to 

the public and show your work, on any or 

all of the four weekends in July; or you 

can share a space with others or hire an 

exhibition space; 

• be featured in the printed guide (20,000 

copies this year), the website and App; 

• be promoted on social media by our 

professional marketing consultants; 

• have access to your own professionally 

designed marketing material; 

• be able to purchase a yellow COS flag to 

display outside your venue. 

The deadline for participation is mid-
