momentum that will continue
to propel KOA forward.”
A LEAP FORWARD
By the 1980s, KOA was a
publicly traded company, but
one of its most significant
stockholders, Oscar Tang,
decided he wanted to make
a move. He purchased KOA
in its entirety and returned
it to private ownership – his
values of fostering business and
connecting people are reflected
across the company today.
“KOA provides places where
campers can make memories,
and small business owners can
build their dreams,” said Oscar.
“Over my four decades of
owning KOA, I am proud of
our work that has positively
affected millions of people
across the U.S. and Canada. It’s
exciting to look forward and see
endless opportunities within
the camping, outdoor, and travel
industry.”
Today, KOA includes 525
franchised and owned locations
across the USA and Canada, it
also owns 44 properties after
expanding the campground
portfolio by 15 further locations
in last year alone. Further, KOA
recently launched a new luxury
brand, Terramor Outdoor
Resort, which finished its
first full season at its flagship
property in Bar Harbor, Maine,
at 80 per cent occupancy. The
company is actively developing
more Terramor locations across
the country.
KOA is now arguably the
leading name in campgrounds
in North America and continues
to evolve its business to meet
the needs of American and
Canadian campers and RV
users via the development
of proprietary campground
management software, access to
industry-leading campground
design professionals and bestin-class
staff training.
A BRAND FOR TODAY
AND TOMORROW
One of the ways in which
KOA is planning to celebrate
and build upon its 60 years of
success is with a new corporate
headquarters. The company
has broken ground on a new
facility in Billings, just a few
short miles from the location of
its spiritual home and first ever
campsite. KOA says that the new
building will represent both its
rich history and also its bright
and ambitious future, with the
overarching them being to help
connect Americans with the
great outdoors.
Another way that KOA
plans to build on its long
history of innovation is the
implementation of a partnership
with Jamestown Advanced
Products, that will see Level
2 EV chargers installed at
campsites across the United
States and Canada. Fans of
KOA can also expect new main
campground building designs
and many other moves that
will increase the company’s
overall modernisation and
sustainability.
Toby O’Rourke added:
“The real story of our 60th
anniversary is that we are just
getting started. With initiatives
like the Campground of the
Future, focusing on integrating
emerging technologies like
solar and electric charging
and empowering our franchise
owners to innovate, we are
eagerly taking on the next 60
years.”
