IS ELECTRIC REALLY THE DREAM?
Y
■ou’ll find a piece on
pages 18 and 19 of this
issue that investigates
whether electric-powered
RVs are the sole answer to the
world’s fossil fuel problem. In
my personal opinion, I’m not so
certain they should be considered
the golden bullet that many
seem to think they are. Naturally,
they vastly reduce carbon
emissions (although we shouldn’t
forget that a large part of how
electricity is made is not exactly
clean), but there a number of
problems they face. One is
infrastructure, particularly on
campsites, which already have a
large number of electric hook-up
points for leisure batteries. There
just isn’t enough infrastructure
for a large proportion of the
global population to have
electric RVs, and to catch
up will be a never-ending
race. Then there’s the issue of
range – at present, electric RVs
simply do not meet the needs
and expectations of end users,
although this is something that
many manufacturers are working
very hard to solve. Electric
vehicles will naturally evolve
and improve, but to me it feels
like everyone has thrown their
eggs into one basket without
truly thinking about the long
game. There are other options
out there: different natural gases,
other liquid fuels, things that
may be able to use the existing
infrastructure we have for
petroleum and diesel. I’m not
purporting to know the answer
to the riddle, but I do think it is
worth the industry taking a little
time and investment to explore
some alternative options…
You may (hopefully) notice
that Camping Trade World seems
a little smoother and faster
this issue – that’s because we
have changed to a new hosting
partner Yumpu, which we hope
will deliver an even better service
for the camping, caravanning
and RV industries. As always,
please direct any feedback to me
or one of the other members of
the team.
Also, don’t forget that the next
issue will be our special Caravan
Salon 2022 preview edition.
If you’re going to be at the
caravanning industry’s biggest
event and want to let people
know why they can’t afford to
miss a visit to your stand, get
in touch with us today to see
how we can create a custom
marketing plan for you.
Enjoy the issue,
