Q1 THE DETAIL
▲ The Knaus Tabbert headquarters: the German leisure vehicle manufacturer has reported strong figures for 2022 so
+
far.
First quarter health
check: we’re still flying
After the past two years where records seem to have tumbled at every turn, it seemed
only right to conduct a minor health check on the industry as the figures for the first
quarter of 2022 start to filter through. Spoiler alert: the industry is still red hot.
F
■or a little while at
least, it seemed like
2022 was going to
be the first relatively normal
year for business in the postpandemic
era. That quickly
changed when conflict began in
Europe and coronavirus began
causing lockdown chaos in
China once more – all of which
has contrived to provide some
serious supply headaches for
the caravan, motorhome and
camping industries. Despite
these challenges, demand
remains as high as ever, with
the pandemic spike showing
no signs of slowing. But
all of this is just conjecture
and estimation, what do the
numbers say? Well, we did some
digging for you to bring you a
quick summary of the financial
state of the industry via the first
and second quarter reports of
some of its biggest players.
In Germany, one of the
industry’s biggest players
Knaus Tabbert, reported that
the high demand for caravans
and motorhomes remains after
examining its figures for the first
quarter of 2022. The company
reported an order intake of
6,000 units for the quarter as
well as an increase of two per
cent in units delivered to 7,247.
However, the company’s order
backlog also remained at a high
level as of 31 March 2022 at an
estimated 31,000 units – this
was largely attributed to issues
in the supply chain affecting the
entire motorhome and caravan
industry. While production of
caravans increased by 45 per
cent, production of higher-end
motorhomes and vans declined
by 33 per cent and 50 per cent
respectively, despite strong
demand due to anticipated
chassis bottlenecks.
